We had a great experience at La
Palapa. We went on a Monday - free corkage night - and loved that we could bring our own wine. Our dinners were delicious! I had the steak enchiladas - amazing. The tacos were also a hit. The guacamole was ok, too acidic for my taste and I didn't love the seasoning on the chips. They have an interesting dessert menu with unique items (like corn flavored ice cream). The ambience is cool and it wasn't too loud. The service was fine until the end. We waited a while to pay our bill and finally a different server took our payment. We would definitely go back (probably on a Monday again)!"

the vegan option is excellent, and
the margaritas are true to their word-- one of the best that i've had in NYC. great location and very cool ambiance, but I was seated in the back room which isn't as nice as the front room and is a little secluded. However, it was still a great time with excellent food!!!"

Solidly good food and drinks at a
place where you can sit down and enjoy a meal. Try anything in the mole sauce (I enjoyed the shrimp from the specials menu). The fried sweet plantains are also a treat."
Dined on 2/21/2014
The food was fantastic. We had the
guacamole and a quesadilla for appetizers: both were delicious. Our waiter was very attentive without being pushy. The margaritas are tasty, though a bit pricey for the small size. My girlfriend is a vegetarian and was very happy with the vegetarian relleno she got. I got the lamb shank and it was very good. The total tab came in at about $100, but for excellent food, good service, and a nice ambience, it was a good deal (given that this is NYC). A couple of minor complaints: seating was kind of scrunched together; the person next to me had to ask me to get up to use the bathroom because the spaces between tables is too narrow. It also gets loud later in the night as people come in to hang out by the bar."

Great spot for group event. We had
ample amounts of everything for everyone, from our prixe fixe menu. The drinks flowed abundantly and the food was flavorful and visually appealing. Price point was good as well. A great find !"

Amazing food. Loved it. Great
drink menu. Atmosphere just OK. Great waitress!"
Dined on 1/25/2014
Really good food and nice and
efficient personnel. We sat by the hectic bar which was a bit disturbing due to the high noise level and people bumping in to me. A quite young crowd, in their mid twenties."
Dined on 2/1/2014
The food is much better than the
crowded and loud bar scene would suggest. There are a few quieter tables, and the staff make efforts to seat couple in places somewhat buffered from the noise. I come back for many dishes, but my favorite is the grilled duck breast with oaxacan mole. Fantastic. Also love the braised greens served as a side with most main courses, generous avocadoes in the salad, good fish dishes too (a recent special, salmon with a fig-chipotle sauce, sounds weird but tasted wonderful)."

Came here for my birthday after
coming for brunch and happy hour several times at the recommendation of a friend. Have always had a great time. They bent over backwards to accommodate my 9-person party after I made a reservation for only 7 on a busy Friday night. The margaritas are wonderful, and happy hour and brunch are great deals. Food is delicious. One of my favs in EV!"

La Palapa has great food, good
service but we were seated in the "party room" and very unhappy that they put us in a section with rowdy 20-somethings looking to get drunk on margaritas and party - it ruined the dining experience. I believe they put us in a table back there because I noted that it was my birthday in the open table reservation, so be careful about doing that. We were only and group of 4 30+ and not looking for the ambiance in that back room - it was awful."

This stretch of St. Mark's Place
in the East Village lacks charm, but La Palapa East is definitely upscale. We started with a delicious guacamole. I had sangria and my companion had blood orange margaritas. Our mains were my Caesar salad and his pork tacos, both excellent. We shared a huge tres leches for dessert. The noise level at the bar was pretty high when we first entered, but we sat way back and after a few minutes, it was quiet enough for conversation. There's an alcove in the rear of the room that is perfect for a private party of about 6 people, so i'm giving that some thought for a future date with friends. Our server was okay, but the bus persons were especially attentive. On the whole it was a very pleasant experience."

Went to La Palapa a few days ago
for a friend's birthday. Food was great and the staff was friendly. Nice and relaxed atmosphere. We were able to relax after we finished eating and were not pressured out the door, which happens at many other restaurants. I would definitely recommend La Palapa."

We were recommended this
restaurant by a friend and it certainly was a good experience. Food was great and everything was freshly made. Service was also great and very helpful with the menu choices. We will come back for sure, next time in New York"

Loved it. And it is a 'high road'
employer - treats employees well and it shows"

I took a Mexican cooking class and
Whole Foods a couple of years ago, taught by the owners of La Palapa. Their cookbook (Antojitos: Fesitve & Flavorful Mexican Small Plates by Barbara Sibley and Margaritte Malfy with Mary Goodbody) gets used regularly in my house and we enjoy going to La Palapa to have someone else make the same delicious food! The restaurant is noisy and crowded, but the service is excellent. I especially like the three sauces offered (mild, medium, and hot) and you can ask for the fig chipolte sauce that usually comes with one of the entrees. Mexican beers on tap and some unusual beer drinks involving lime, tomato juice, etc. For dessert, try Patron Coffee Liqueur over ice cream or avocado pie."

Came here with a group of 10
people for brunch, service was a little slow given that out big group may have overwhelmed the staff however food and drinks were spot on and all in all, making it a very pleasant meal overall."

I recently went to La Palapa for
dinner with a few of my girlfriends. It was a Friday night and it was lively, fun but still intimate. The food was great. I recommend the guacamole and the mushroom taco! The service was outstanding- so helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend for a group of friends or a date. Great spot in the village!"

We have eaten at La Palapa several
times and it never fails to please- we love it! The food is well above your average Mexican!"
Dined on 12/31/2013
La Palapa is a great place to
celebrate any holiday or special ocassion in addition to regular dining. The service is top notch, the menu has a lot of variety, and the food is delicious of course. I think that La Palapa is one of the best mexican food restaurants."
Dined on 12/31/2013
you should hope you end up at La
Palapa. Non theme park Mexican food, simply prepared, excellent cocktails. I look forward to returning for dinner."

My boyfriend and I have been here
twice, once with his family and once with mine. There's something good for everyone, the staff is always very kind, and the food is delicious."
Dined on 12/27/2013
We took a large group to LP over
the holidays. The food and service were great! I would definitely go back!"
Dined on 12/26/2013
Great food at a fantastic price.
Quality service and a neighborhood gem."
Dined on 12/13/2013
Everything we ordered was
delicious. They offer many dishes that are nowhere to be found on menus of most (if not all!) Mexican restaurants in Manhattan. La Palapa is very authentic and special."
Dined on 12/8/2013
Had a group of 17 and was able to
take advantage of the Sangria pitcher special. Food was reasonably priced and delicious."
Dined on 11/24/2013
I have always loved the food at La
Palapa but some times the noise level is overwhelming. This time they offered us a seat in the back room and it was still festive but pleasantly quiet. I highly recommend the back room."
Dined on 11/22/2013
Guacamole made with completely
tasteless avocado and very bland spices. Chile rilleno covered with thin, tastless tomato sauce that made the whole thing soggy; poblano chile also essentially tasteless; might as well not have been there. Just a mess on the plate. Stay away."
Dined on 11/21/2013
What is more delicious than
Mexican pumpkin soup? Who knew this is a wonderful seasonal dish that is only served when the owner finds the fresh pumpkins at the market. Always order the daily specials - the pork shank was superb as were the very delicious and not too sweet margaritas. We even managed to indulge in little corn pancake starts with guacamole - tortaditas? finishing with delicious coconut salted ice cream...OLE! we will be back."
Dined on 11/13/2013
Classic Mexican cuisine! Tasty
food and extremely accomodating staff. Great for groups of all sizes and the bar scene was very active on Saturday night. Service was simply above and beyond. Very pleasurable overall experience."
Dined on 11/16/2013
I came to this east village old
reliable on a first date. The food was great, the margaritas were flowing, and the service was excellent. I found that the food was actually better than usual. I'll be back again and again!!!"

A friend took me to brunch here
several years ago, and it's my go-to brunch place whenever I'm in the city on a Sunday. This past week, they had a shrimp omelet, and it was amazing, even better than I expected. I'd be a regular if I lived in the city."
Dined on 10/6/2013
I've been to this place many times
and this last trip was very disappointing. My friends and I had a reservation and were seated right away but it took the waited almost an hour to take our food orders (the restaurant was not even crowded). Then, after splitting the check and giving a 20% tip, the waiter had enough attitude to come over to my friend and tell her that she had "made a mistake" on the check. He rudely asked for more of a tip... for not even being mediocre in service that night. It was one of the rudest experiences I have ever had dining in NYC and I will not be coming back."

I love La Palapa - I have loved it
ever since a friend first took me here years ago. My favourite Mexican rstaurant east of Mexico :-)"
Dined on 9/22/2013
Wonderful sized portions and great
service. Super convenient for the East Village theaters and service is such that they'll get you out before curtain."
Dined on 9/22/2013
La Palapa is always a great choice
and a great recommendation to my friends when they are looking for real authentic Mexican food. The ingredients are sometimes rare, such as the spices, but you can tell the management goes the extra distance in obtaining them, thus, making the food be as authentic as possible. I had succulent Chiles en Nogada. They were absolutely delicious. The last time I had had them was in Cancun... Same great taste there and at La Palapa."
Dined on 9/21/2013
I love the friendly services and
recommendations for dishes. Everything had a wonderful, exciting and genuin taste. For real Mexican food, visit La Palapa!"
Dined on 9/12/2013
This place used to be better. It's
still a reliable spot for more or less authentic Mexican, but for the price and given that they nickel and dime you with everything a la carte, you can do better. Service was friendly and fast, however."
Dined on 8/31/2013
We enjoyed our food, especially
the appetizer, but I'm still on the hunt for perfect Mexican."
Dined on 8/22/2013
I've gone to La Palapa for year to
enjoy their blood orange frozen maragaritas. It is absolutey delicious and never disappoints! The food is great here as well, and is a wonderful and fun spot for dinner on St. Mark's place."
Dined on 8/21/2013
I brought my boyfriend here for
his birthday dinner. Him being from the west coast knows what good Mexican food tastes like, and we both were extremely satisfied with the food at La Palapa. I chose this restaurant partly because of their vegan option, and it was also very delicious. It was very dark in there, making a romantic, intimate scene, but the noise level was pretty loud throughout the whole night. The drink menu has tons to choose from. I would highly recommend coming here for dinner or sitting at the bar!"
