A nice, medium priced tapas spot, just of Astor Place. It has that old European feel in a classic Village restaurant and authentic food, moderately priced. Not noisy at all and very casual. We loved it.

$36 for a small pitcher of grape juice, deceptively labeled "sangria", amounts to a blatant rip off. The Paella is not fresh and authentic, but rather package frozen seafood added to a pile of rice. Terrible. No wonder the place was empty

We ordered Seafood Paella which had no lobster or shrimp just a few clams and mussels. The sangria carafes were so full of fruit that there was hardly any liquid. Had to order 2 carafes for only 3 people. At $26 each a total ripoff.

I have been to La Paella twice and plan to go many times in the future. Every tapas item has been delicious and the salads, too. The chiorizo was tender and spicy, but not too hot. Stuffed peppers with goat cheese were outstanding. We also ordered the bacon wrapped shrimp, sliced ribeye steak, fried calamari, and stuffed artichoke in a yummy sauce. On the previous occasion we ordered the mussels which were perfect. The server was charming and very helpful with suggestions. We ordered the red sangria that had plenty of apples and was superb. The restaurant is small with stucco walls and wooden beams with hanging bunches of dried roses attached. This is a lovely, unpretentious restaurant.

The grilled calamari, grilled shrimp wrapped in bacon & the grilled rib eye are always good. Also try the tres leches cake. It's not too sweet. The sangria is also very good. It's a perfect for when you just want to have small plates. The service is very friendly and they don't rush you, even on a Saturday night.

We ordered four different tapas. Each dish was delicious. The lamb skewers were succulent. The grilled calamari was grilled perfectly. The shrimp with bacon was very flavorful. The chorizo empanada was savory, not at all greasy. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone who loves a tapas menu.

Food is good, affordable, but the place can get very noisy. The tables are very close together and the ceiling is quite low. If you don't mind the noise and are not going there to have a nice conversation with whoever you are with the place is great.

Ordered the Ham & Cheese Croquettas and the Basque Paella. Both were delicious, servers were very attentive without being invasive, and the price was quite reasonable. I think the check came to $50 for the paella and the app, and we had enough leftovers for lunch the next day.

La Paella is a cute spot. The sangria was good, and I had a pleasant evening, but the food was a miss. Every one of the the tapas dishes I had was mediocre and bland, though it was all edible. But for the price I expect better; I'll be in no rush to return.

The most notable aspect of the restaurant was the friendly staff. Unfortunately the food was merely so-so. Other couple seemed to enjoy their paella, so maybe that was the way to go? I do recommend the stuffed peppers. The wine list was ok, and relatively well priced for bottle service.

It was my first visit to La Pella and I was surpassed just by how amazing the food is! We did order bottles of sangria and the white one is really more like juice while the red one was yummy, but perhaps a little too strong for sangria. I think once they balance out their sangrias the place would be perfect.

I've been to La Paella a number of times in the past, and always enjoyed the experience -- hence why I was eager to suggest it as the venue for this month's book club meeting. The food was excellent, as always, and so was the sangria. However, I was disappointed to discover, upon receiving the bill, that the restaurant is no longer offering their 2-for-1 sangria special on Mondays and Tuesdays, despite it still being advertised on their website. We ordered a pitcher and specifically asked our server about the BOGO special, and he confirmed that they were still offering it. I don't know if the question and answer got lost in translation, but we ended up paying for two pitchers, when we thought we'd only be paying for one.

In short, muscles that stuck to the shell and when pulled off, took part of the shell with it because it was old and reheated. All the seafood ingredients were not hot and far from freshly prepared. Rice was mushy. Worst food experience we have ever had. Nice ambience and it tricked us!

  • Basque Paella No
    Meticulous
    Dined on 12/7/2013
We have dined at La Paella on a number of occasions. However, this was the first time that we ordered the Basque Paella - chicken, sausage with seafood. The paella overall was quite poor, especially the chicken and sausage. One could not discern what part of the chicken the pieces came from and the sausage was somehow made up to look like a ball or irregular shapes, definitely not sliced.

I found this place because I wanted to use a restaurant . com gift certificate on a random Friday night dinner with my aunt and sister. It had mixed reviews but we gave it a shot and we were glad we did. The service was great - many people taking care of the table and you never had to hunt anyone down for service. Drinks were always refilled - sangria was delicious. We ordered a ton of apps and the sausage paella to share. It was definitely a good choice. We had the steak, artichoke, shrimp with bacon, ham croquettes and everything was very good. We even mopped up the sauces with the bread. We ended up taking home most of the paella because we had ordered too much food. It's delicious for lunch again the next day though so it was great.

Years ago, this used to be a dark, quiet, romantic little spot. The food is as good as ever, but when I arrived shortly before 7 PM, there were no customers, and only a waiter and a handful of busboys hanging out at the bar. Everyone was watching videos on their phones, which were audible. There was no music on, and it smelled like cleanser. I'm glad it was clean, but it should have smelled like food. I was waiting for my dinner companion, but it was about ten minutes before I was offered a drink, and that was only because the waiter saw me looking at him. Then one of the bus boys hooked his laptop up to a giant flat screen above the bar (I don't remember THAT being there) so he could watch a soccer game.

I went to celebrate my birthday with a group of 8. The white sangria was excellent. The tapas were great. I did not try the paella but others in my party did and enjoyed it. The atmosphere is energetic on a Saturday night at the height of the dinner rush so if you don't like shouting then this is not the venue for you. But I would definitely go back.

The paella was delicious, though it could have been slightly bigger. We had the seafood paella with shrimp, calamari and muscles. We also had one of the Spanish wines. They have great prices on bottles, with several options between $26 - $30. The wine list is notable because of the prices, though, not because it is particularly expansive or luxury, though for me I good, reasonably priced wine is all I need.

The restaurant didn't have half of the menu items available. most of the appetizers weren't available, the ingredients hadn't been ordered and none of the ports /half of the wines that were listed on the menu weren't even an option! It seems like this restaurant is close to closing and compared to when we went a year ago (and if I recall, had such a good experience that we decieded to come back to celebrate a birthday) the place has sadly gone downhill. I wish they could get back to their former glory!

I have been a patron of this restaurant since 2011 but I found during my visit last week, that while the service was very good and the ambiance was perfect, the food was overpriced, over salted, and unremarkable. The selection of food that they now offer is very limited, the pitcher of sangria is excessively overpriced and you can see the new prices for their food glued on top of the old prices. While I do not believe that I will be eating here again or suggesting this as a great Tapas place to any more of my friends or co-workers, I will definitely continue to enjoy great Tapas at other Tapas Restaurant locations here in NYC!

I really enjoyed the sangria, glad it wasnt happy hour because i would have been tempted to have more than i should have had. We opted for tapas instead of paella, i am not sure if that was a good or bad decision because we were full fast after sharing only a few. The paella at the neighboring table was intoxicating and I really want to come back and try it!
