A word from La Mediterranee Bistro & Wine Bar
Since 1980, La Mediterranee Bistro & Wine Bar has been well known in Manhattan for traditional French cuisine and contemporary specialties served in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
La Mediterranee Bistro & Wine Bar is a French Bistro carrying not only the gastronomic traditions of Provence and Cote D' Azur, but also those of other regions of France, represented in our daily specials such as: Bouillabaisse, Pot au feu and Cassoulet. We offer an array of fresh seafood, with a great emphasis on mussels, including five different recipes. The Italian influence in the South of France is of course manifested in our pastas prepared with our family recipes.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The salmon salads were quite tasty, and another person ordered the duck confit. Overall, food was good but didn't stand out as stellar. But good place to get in and out in a lunch hour while still feeling relaxed."

  • "I came for the outdoor seating on a beautiful Spring day. The construction on the other side of the street brought me inside. But I wasn't disappointed with my dining experience. The special of soft shell crab was exceptional, firm and tasty. The fig salad was a a delightful mixture of taste and textures. The piano player was good, his music appropriate and not intrusive. All in all glad I tried the Bistro and I will be going back. "

  • "...in the midst of a regrettable "Preppie-Murder-Bar" row of middling restaurants, one finds La Mediterannée, a small French gem with very good - and very fairly priced - food and wine list. Add to civilized dining the frequent presence of a lovely pianist playing lots of Cole Porter-esque music, it's a winning place for Mid-Town East dining."

  • "Warm welcome, attentive, though not forceful, service, excellent piano player and a feeling of welcome with well-executed classic recipes."

  • "Good service, low noise. Perfect for lunch. I would recommend for lunch. Lots of regulars"

  • "We had a hidden table near the stairs to the restrooms. And this with a reservation! Walk-ins had better seating. There were only 3 reservations actually made. Thankfully the food was good. Would think twice before going back. "

  • "Last year, my wife and I had walked by the restaurant and noted a piano player near the bar. He played really well. We went in and sat at the bar and listened for a while sipping our cocktails. We made a dinner reservation for the next evening and had a great time. This year we went back and it was just as we remembered. A really nice, intimate, European styled restaurant with good food, good service, nice friendly staff, and soft piano music by Harold playing the American Song Book! "

  • "Food is OK but not that good. Formulaic French classics. No imagination but decent. Sides are mediocre. Despite the small size the service was so-so. Wouldn't go back. "

  • "Took my girlfriend to La Mediterranee Bistro for valentine's day. I was really pleased overall - great food, great wine, not too cramped (though the place was full). Quality French dining - would highly recommend."

  • "Great food and good atmosphere and a good piano player"

  • "The food was very good and the service was polite and unobtrusive. We thought the cost for dinner was reasonable. Dinner was at 6:30 and there were only 4 couples, so noise level was negligible."

  • "an adorable little gem on the east site. Beouf bourguignon was the best i ever had. Escargot was extremely flavorful surrounded with parsley and garlic. Trout was excellent. A great place."

  • "the wine list is expensive and doesn't have vintages. the service is brusque. the food tastes like something you would get on an airplane. the piano player repeats himself. on the positive side, the room is kind of pretty, if dated, and it's quiet. i would not go back."

  • "I've been frequenting La Mediterranee since 1985. I've brought customers there for business lunches, girlfriends for romantic dinners and good friends when looking for excellent food, good ambiance and a good place for conversation. A relatively small restaurant gives the owner, Ernesto, the opportunity to oversee everything. Food is very well prepared and comes piping hot to your table. They've had a pianist for years, who adds to the wonderful ambiance. The menu is kind of a hybrid French Bistro; wonderful fish, pasta, steak, fries to die for, tasty desserts. Wait staff is very attentive, but never intrusive. What can I tell you, I love this restaurant. In the spring/summer they have tables out in front."

  • "We were a group of nine. We were very well accommodated. The service was fine. The menu was typically French, including the specials. The prices of the food and wine were reasonable. We would certainly return if in the area again."

  • "A neighborhood French restaurant with excellent food, La Mediterranee is also appealing for its piano music--mostly Gershwin show tunes."

  • "When visiting New York we always looked forward to a great evening at La Mediterranee. This was a bad night. Service extremely slow. Food mediocre. Last time for us. I am sorry."

  • "A restaurant with very good French food, a good wine list, friendly, knowledgable staff. Top this off with a comfortable bar and entertainment in the form of a pianist who plays under your conversation! Great place for a business dinner."

  • "We were visiting NY and needed a lunch spot on 2nd ave to meet our son who works nearby. We had an 1145 reservation and arrived about 10 min early-the door was locked! We had to call on the phone and then they unlocked the door. Waitstaff seated us, then ignored us for 15 minutes even though we were the only customers. Finally given water and menus at 12. Food was decent but nothing special. Lunch time on Friday in a business area and only 8 customers in the restaurant? Maybe would be better for after work or dinner. Made us feel we were intruding. Good if you wanted a quiet place."

  • "Best onion soup around! (Even better than some I had last month in Paris) Service was great. Omlett was light n fluffy. Old school decor but nice and cool on a hot day in the city."

  • "A perfect finish to our 30th wedding Anniversary weekend in New York. A fitting substitute for our wedding location Tavern on the Green. Food was superb! My wife is French and she said the entire meal was just like being at "home"! Round tables provided perfect social and dining atmosphere for a party of eight. I would expect French Champagne on the wine list, not French sparkling wine. While tasty, we expected Champagne would be available. The rest of the wine list was excellent. Prices were VERY reasonable."

  • "Always an excellently prepared , varied, authentically French menu. The staff, with Ernesto in the lead, is welcoming, well-informed, and so-o-o French! What a pleasure from the moment I cross the threshhold!"

  • "Delicious food, fresh and perfectly prepared. I had the split pea soup, salmon salad and pommes frites. All were excellent."

  • "Visiting NYC and just stumbled upon this VERY small French bistro w charming bar, ambiance, piano player and excellent food. The French onion soup was out of this world. Waitress Ana was amusing and patient trying to teach me how to fold the napkins that grace the table. The place was still serving dinner at 9:45 when we left."

  • "We had the escargot as an appetizer. First time for my husband. He loved the garlic sauce it was served in, great for bread dunking. I loved the snails too. They were plump and juicy. AS a main course I had the bouillabaisse. There could have been more fish but what there was was very tender and again the broth was delicious. My husband had the lamb shank. Tender and juicy. He devoured it. We had a nice table in the corner. The restaurant was full and quite lively but not so much that you couldn't hear each other talk. And I must add that the service was very attentive and not at all rushed in spite of the fact that the restaurant was full. We would definitely go back."

  • "Just one tiny complaint. My husband was given the menu before I was. And when the food came, I was the last one to be served -- after my husband and my children We were there for Mother's Day and the waiter should have known that women get served first - whether or not it's Mother's Day!"

  • "This is a beautiful small restaurant great for a romantic or intimate dinner. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with paintings of french signature. Harold at the piano gave us a wonderful musical world tour .I commend him for his talent and great choice of musical themes. I had the prix fixe dinner which included nicely done moules à la mariniere preceded by a tomato salad with olive oil dressing. Dessert was a small delicious cheese cake. My counterpart had grilled salmon which was very good. I asked for substitution of french fries that came with the mussels with haricot verts and it was done. This was charged as a side order on the bill but was removed when I pointed it out to the waiter. Nice cozy place for a french dinner."

  • "La Mediterranee never fails to provide me with a pleasant experience. The food was fantastic, the atmosphere is cozy especially when the piano player is in the house and the service was attentive. It is a place I return to again and again whenever I'm in New York City."

  • "A very pleasant dinner in a nice, old-world type setting, with pleasant owner/host and staff. Piano music probably kept conversation on quieter side, a welcome addition. Steak frites was good, but not among the best in town. Overall, dinner was a good value, and we will return."
