A word from La Mediterranee Bistro & Wine Bar
Since 1980, La Mediterranee Bistro & Wine Bar has been well known in Manhattan for traditional French cuisine and contemporary specialties served in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
La Mediterranee Bistro & Wine Bar is a French Bistro carrying not only the gastronomic traditions of Provence and Cote D' Azur, but also those of other regions of France, represented in our daily specials such as: Bouillabaisse, Pot au feu and Cassoulet. We offer an array of fresh seafood, with a great emphasis on mussels, including five different recipes. The Italian influence in the South of France is of course manifested in our pastas prepared with our family recipes.

My first time there. Very nice room and when it filled up, it was still quiet. The food was very, very , good. French onion soup, escargot, skirt steak, trout almondine, creme brulee. Service was friendly & attentive and a live piano too. Price fixe menu was a good deal and a nice selection of wines. Will definitely be back.

Spent a week in New York catching up on shows we haven't seen. Had three meals at this wonderful neighborhood bistro. Their early bird special is a great value and the service was outstanding. The trout was fantastic as well as all the meals we had. The dinner music was also an extra benefit I cannot recommend this restaurant high enough.

Good atmosphere, and we did not feel rushed, even though a member of our party elderly and needed assistance. We each had relatively small, simple dishes, but they were very well prepared. I would like to come back and try the specials and fish main courses. Desserts were very good.

The food was good and the wine selection was good. Portions for both were generous. Piano player was a nice touch. The proprietor was on hand and came over to help us put our coats on when we left. Nice touch. My main is issue was that the service was very slow. The two waitresses on the floor were clearly overwhelmed. I would recommend this place only if you are not in any kind of rush to get anywhere. Having said that, I would go back again.

A comfortable, long-established, happy place to be with a good menu with meals well prepared and flavorful. Add to this is excellent live music at accompanies the ambiance and does not dominate it, allowing pleasant conversation without the need for elevated levels to be heard. A definite favorite when we visit NYC.

We were looking for a nice dinner with live music, and found it here. The French bistro food was very good, well-prepared and tasty. Portions were perfect. Piano music added to a pleasant atmosphere. The only negative aspect was that it was too brightly lit for my taste. In fact, even though we had made a reservation, we almost opted to not go in, because of the overly lit space. The piano music drew us in however, and as I said everything else was a lovely experience.

We love this restaurant. You cannot ask for a more intimate, romantic place to enjoy a delicious dinner. Service is beyond compare, food is scrumptious, the host is gentile and welcoming-- and while you dine, you are treated to lovely piano music! Can't say enough good things. Just hope they go on forever. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience in a city with plenty of choices but few true gems :)

I came for the outdoor seating on a beautiful Spring day. The construction on the other side of the street brought me inside. But I wasn't disappointed with my dining experience. The special of soft shell crab was exceptional, firm and tasty. The fig salad was a a delightful mixture of taste and textures. The piano player was good, his music appropriate and not intrusive. All in all glad I tried the Bistro and I will be going back.

...in the midst of a regrettable "Preppie-Murder-Bar" row of middling restaurants, one finds La Mediterannée, a small French gem with very good - and very fairly priced - food and wine list. Add to civilized dining the frequent presence of a lovely pianist playing lots of Cole Porter-esque music, it's a winning place for Mid-Town East dining.

Last year, my wife and I had walked by the restaurant and noted a piano player near the bar. He played really well. We went in and sat at the bar and listened for a while sipping our cocktails. We made a dinner reservation for the next evening and had a great time. This year we went back and it was just as we remembered. A really nice, intimate, European styled restaurant with good food, good service, nice friendly staff, and soft piano music by Harold playing the American Song Book!

I've been frequenting La Mediterranee since 1985. I've brought customers there for business lunches, girlfriends for romantic dinners and good friends when looking for excellent food, good ambiance and a good place for conversation. A relatively small restaurant gives the owner, Ernesto, the opportunity to oversee everything. Food is very well prepared and comes piping hot to your table. They've had a pianist for years, who adds to the wonderful ambiance. The menu is kind of a hybrid French Bistro; wonderful fish, pasta, steak, fries to die for, tasty desserts. Wait staff is very attentive, but never intrusive. What can I tell you, I love this restaurant. In the spring/summer they have tables out in front.

We were visiting NY and needed a lunch spot on 2nd ave to meet our son who works nearby. We had an 1145 reservation and arrived about 10 min early-the door was locked! We had to call on the phone and then they unlocked the door. Waitstaff seated us, then ignored us for 15 minutes even though we were the only customers. Finally given water and menus at 12. Food was decent but nothing special. Lunch time on Friday in a business area and only 8 customers in the restaurant? Maybe would be better for after work or dinner. Made us feel we were intruding. Good if you wanted a quiet place.
