Diner Reviews
  • "The food is nowhere as good as it used to be. Went here because it was my nieces favorite restaurant and we haven't eaten here in over a year. Portions smaller, food was just OK"

  • "I had excellent experience at La mar!!! We sat on there outdoor patio which I requested with a nice view and heated lamp. The service was great and fast and food totally amazing!! Presentation was beautiful. We ordered the ceviche sampler and it was so fresh and so delicious! There mix was amazing. Then the empanadas platter and skewers sampler which was cooked so perfect and marinaded just right. Everything was fresh Abd presentation amazing again! We finished the night with the steak medallions dinner with potatoes and it just melted In your mouth. We shared a expensive dessert which was nice too! Overall great food, great service, great experience Amd I will go back or recommend to friends!! Just a little pricey but worth the experience!"

  • "Our waiter, James made such a great job, he's bilingual and super fun. He did a better job than the 100%... and the food is amazing, fresh, delicate, if you like fish this place is a Must for you."

  • "Very nice setting with the exception of the tables for 2. Your date is seated too far away from you. Nice and clean, gorgeous views. Parking next door for $10. Staff with excellent customer service, nice and professional. And of Course the most important issue the food it is great."

  • "I love the food! The ceviches are all surprisingly varied and delicious. The staff is generous with their time and very helpful. The outdoor venue is delightful, if not a bit too noisy. The indoor seating is serene and lovely. We had several types of mixtos (skewers), all very tasty and a good proportion for lunch, considering the the multitude of appetizers we tried. The corazon was delightfully chewy and richly flavored. The jaleas (deep fried squid, mussels, prawns and fish) was fun to see and eat, but a bit too large. The prawns were the highlight, I wish there were more."

  • "Lar Mar scratched my occasional itch for raw fish at Sunday lunch. Located on the water at the Embarcadero, it features views of the bay in a "soft" industrial setting - large white room, big windows, exposed ducting, irrigation and structural elements. There is a large outside dining area, but I ate inside. Started with a Pisco sour - never had one before - it was great, but I have nothing to compare it with. Lunch started with the tiradito passion, an attractively plated salmon dish with a passion fruit leche de tigre with a glass of albarino. Followed up with the grilled beef heart skewer, beefy with a mild innard background flavor, and a glass of Carneros pinot noir. Everything was very fresh and service was attentive and well informed."

  • "The food is always delicious and the staff is accommodating unlike a lot of the higher end restaurants in the city. We always have a good time at La Mar. Worth the price."

  • "Inventive and flavorful food, there were two good octopus dishes on the menu, the lomo saltado was a good follow-up to a variety of seafood ceviches and appetizers. Good selection of Spanish wines."

  • "Had a great lunch. We all had different entrees which made it fun to share. We all would like to return."

  • "Such an excellent location, the design of the restaurant and view are fabulous for both lunch or brunch! We had an excellent waiter, very attentive and kind. However the host was a little rude and seemed bothered that we were there (we did have reservations). Only other negative was bathroom cleanliness-- while the facility 'looked clean' there was an overwhelming smell of urine that definitely was hard to forget in order to enjoy the meal. Odd that such a beautiful dining room didn't have 'facilities' to match. Other than that, food was interesting and flavorful-- cocktails were fantastic!"

  • "The service was outstanding by every individual who participated in making it a special birthday evening. Service was friendly, timely, professional, and proactive. The flavors of all dishes we ordered (2 entrees, an appetizer and a salad) were good and distinct from the other dishes, and the texture of the seafood was perfect. I might have given an outstanding rating for the food except that several dishes came with good sized portions of flavored mashed potatoes. The quinoa salad was wonderful except there was too little of it on top of a larger amount of flavored mashed potatoes. The ambience was relaxed, and the food presentation is what you would expect for a restaurant of this caliber. We had a memorable and enjoyable birthday dinner."

  • "We had a wonderful time here, and the food was great. We were a group of seven ladies, celebrating a birthday in the group. and it was just perfect. We were able to order the very "shareable" appetizers including the great Ceviche sampler, the anticuchos (skeweres), Yucca frita, and empanadas - so satisfied and very happy. Great desserts too, which I had never tried before."

  • "Food isn't as good as years' past and certain menu items are overpriced (i.e. Quinoa Causa Salad)."
    Dined on 7/7/2014
  • "There's better Peruvian cuisine to be had in the city, but the location on the pier makes this restaurant a stand-out choice for tourists. The view is a bit restricted (you can't see the Bay Bridge) and the menu, while broad, a bit uninspired. The dining space is lovely and the service is spot-on attentive."
    Dined on 7/6/2014
  • "Quality of food is often inversely proportional to the quality of the view. On a touristy strip like the ferry plaza along the embarcadero one would not expect to find such great food, reasonable (but not cheap) prices and a wonderful atmosphere. Great service piled on top makes La Mar the sort of exception that proves the rule about great food being hard to find in beautiful places."

  • "We had a great meal here with a great waiter. It was still light out and we got seated on the back enclosed patio which is my favorite room to be in. As always, the ceviche was great as was the pisco sours. We had friends in from New York who can always be hard to impress but they loved the location and the food."

  • "Food was fantastic, especially for those craving Peruvian flavor. Nice setting and ambiance. A little loud. Our particular waiter delivered pretty poor service (not attentive and generally pretty rude) but, I wouldn't fault the entire restaurant for that."
    Dined on 7/1/2014
  • "I found the food and service excellent. However, it was too noisy. The background music was too much in the foreground, too loud. With only 2 people, we could hear each other. In a larger group, it would be difficult."

  • "Great food, great ambience and a wonderful place to go whether its family, friends or clients."

  • "Elegant Peruvian food, all the right flavors. I thought the food was a little bland so the waiter brought us some delicious hot sauce. I recommend the Causa, Anticuchos and the Jalea. The Cebiche was good, but again, bland. Peruvian food is supposed to be spicy so they missed the mark on that. Overall though its a great time on the Embaracadero, especially nice on a beautiful summer evening."

  • "Took a friend to lunch on a weekday. The restaurant was not overly busy, but the service was definitely "brusque" at best. Although the food is decent, the high prices and lack of genuine hospitality will deter me from future visits. This restaurant has a beautiful outdoor deck that would be a great spot to enjoy a meal by the bay, but in three visits to this restaurant they always claim to have nothing available on the patio, even though we did notice empty tables. Baffling that we couldn't be seated there, and annoying since there's nothing special about the inside room. High prices, careless, inattentive wait staff and food that is just "okay" ... there are many better spots in downtown SF."

  • "Everything about this spot was excellent. Cocktails, food, service and the view of the Bay are packaged together in an incredible restaurant. Will be back again, and again!"

  • "My family and I had dinner here for my birthday. I love ceviche, and had heard good things about La Mar's food. We were not disappointed. Both the food and the service were very good. We will return, and I will recommend!!"

  • "I went to La Mar for lunch on June 24. I was disappointed with the portion size at this restaurant. It was somewhat expensive for a single skewer of dark meat chicken with a couple of pearl-sized potatoes. It was flavorful, but not enough of it. It was listed as an entree, not a starter. The chocolate crepe was inedible. The orange stuff that it was filled with just didn't taste good with the chocolate crepe, which also was the size of a Hostess Twinkie and not the typical pancake sized French style crepe. The wine by the glass was good though! Shoulda stuck with just wine!"

  • "We wanted an authentic Peruvian meal with a touch panache!! The food was delicious - loved the sweet potato and plantain chips too!! That and an excellent bottle of Malbec - we all left quite content!! The service was spot on and very helpful! Loved it!!"

  • "We ordered the cebiche jalapeno and it was bland- not enough lemon or salt. The empanadas aji de gallina were very small, and nothing special. The arroz de mar was ok. The drinks were great, at least! And the service was also good--our waiter comped the cebiche because he said the chef agreed with us."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "Ceviche was excellent, everything is sustainably sourced. Causas were all delicious and inventive- such a treat for a Peruvian girl like me! Anticuchos were delicious-don't fear the beef heart. Literally some of the most tender and delicious meat you will ever experience. Portions were appropriate for a fine dining experience. Cocktail hour has $5 Pisco Sours-delicious. The chocolate crepe with lucuma mousse was incredible. You need to know what you're eating to truly enjoy- lucuma is a Peruvian fruit, so hard to find in the US. The chefs have locked in the rich, distinct flavor and created a special dessert I would go back for again and again. We love you, Gaston!"

  • "We were a group from Monterey, all of us seniors. It was cool that I was able to make reservations using my i-phone while we were still on the bus from Monterey for a day at the Ferry Building. One member of our group recalled that La Mar was featured on Check Please Bay Area so we decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed! I think the best part was the knowledgeable gentleman who waited on us! He was endlessly patient with our many questions and provided good suggestions. We also appreciated the rest of the staff that helped serve. The food and cocktails were delicious and all wished we had room for dessert. I look forward to returning to La Mar!"

  • "After all the hype I finally tried this place only to be disappointed. The food is fine but in San Fran, fine isnt going to keep us coming back. The cocktails were really nice and the presentation of the food attractive. The worst was the service. We felt incredibly rushed through our entire dinner-our server talking really fast and rushing to and from our table---borderline frantic. I think our server maybe spent 3 minutes with us all together."

  • "Our last minute booking was rewarded with a table right on the water. We had a high energy server but that didn't translate to rapid service. But on a beautiful day who could be bothered to rush off the deck and back to the office. Ceviches were amazing but the octopus left a little to be desired."

  • "Great ceviche, rib and pulpo. Wine by glass was underwhelming, so order a bottle. Very nice buzz and great view. Good service."

  • "La Mar is comparable to Picca (in Los Angeles) in terms of quality, but with an amazing view to go with great food. The cebiche was fresh and bright, the skewered meats juicy and chock-full of flavor. The space is beautiful and the service was excellent as well."
