We had a table reserved for a party of five at 5:30pm. We came from VA to go dine at "La Mar Cebicheria". Once we were seated, our waiter came and explained the appetizers, we ordered all 4 types of cebiches they had (cannot pick a fav, all were amazing), an empanada de aji de gallina, and tuna tar tar. Then we got out food dishes, which were Lomo Saltado (best pick), Arroz Criollo, Chaufa De Quinoa, and Seco Marino. Our server was a pro at explaining every single special to the detail (ask for Renzo) For dessert, definitely get LUCUMA ICE CREAM! You will not be disappointed. In my opinion, their food is the best Peruvian food you can find in Manhattan, so I decided to give them a second try (I'm Peruvian and their food reminds me of my mom's cooking!).
They definitely have taken to heart all the comments and improved tremendously! I was so glad that my experienced last weekend was excellent. Attentive and polite service. It took us a few months to follow up the recommendation but it was well worth the wait. The dishes all had a unique flavor whether in the semi-raw escabeche or the highly seasoned grilled octopus appetizer. My son and I had a paella-like dish of fried rice and seafood that was excellent. The fish dishes ordered by my wife and sister were also well received. My wife and son have nut allergies. The servers were made aware of the issue and steered us around any problematic dishes. The waiter was very informative about the unusual dishes. Obviously, the ceviches are central, but so are sashima like tiraditos and more traditional empanadas, as well as more filling and traditional mains. The paella like rice dish with seafood was delicious. The menu is likely to have terms for ingredients that you don't know, such as leche de tigre. The wait staff is terrific at explaining all of these and are VERY warm and helpful. Be adventuresome, it's worth it. Wine is not the thing here, in my view. Had I known this ahead of time I would have opted to go at a later time when lucuma for example was on the menu.
