A word from La Madia - A Contemporary Pizzeria
At La Madia, two pleasures - great food and distinctive, delicious wines - come together. La Madia is an urban restaurant that upholds Italian tradition. Every day, our chefs make our pizza dough and fresh pasta from scratch from little more than flour, water, and salt.
The menu is designed for sharing, with flavor-packed, wood-fired pizzas that change seasonally, inventive salads, and savory pasta dishes. Desserts are all made on the premises, in keeping with what's available in the market. The wine list is a wine lover's dream, with more than 75 wines by the glass and hundreds of bottles. And every week, we feature two of our favorite wines for just $6 per glass. In addition to wine and more than 25 beers, La Madia offers innovative cocktails, many of which are made from spirits infused in-house.

We went to La Madia 'cuz of the October lunch special - $7 bucks for soup or salad plus a pizza. Great deal. Ordinarily, this combo is $12: still a very good deal. But what's really great is La Madia's pizza. My wife and I are NYC pizza snobs and we love this place. Dough is exactly the right thickness for the style with chewy consistency, puffy edge (telling of hand prep, not put through a roller), and slight char on the bottom. Perfect. Toppings are first-rate and generously portioned. The pizza size is exactly right for a hungry individual. What's not to love?

For the first time I did not order a pizza, big, huge mistake. Like Pretty Woman Huge mistake. The short ribs were terrible, without season. If the gravy was suppose to make up for it, it did not. It should probably be taken off the menu all together. I didn't send it back because I was with new friends. Possibly my fault for going rouge, but order the pizza. Also service was terribly slow for a mild Sunday night. I will note that their apps and pizza are lovely.

  • Not what I recall
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012

Not the best food as I 've had in past. Quite disappointing actually. Nicholas Farm beet salad (a former favorite) was drenched in a cheap oil. Very disappointing as I recalled a much different and fresher taste on a previous visit in 2013. And margherita pizza was haphazardly prepared and not the standard or presentation I've had in the past. Shame too as I recommended this to an out of town guest, first timer to LaMadia. Service was good and we were seated promptly -that really was the only bonus. Not certain we will return.

We arrived at 7:15 for a 7:30 reservation but weren't seated until 7:50. Feeling bad, they bring us bread and cheese sauce appetizer. They sat us in a booth that was so narrow, the table was touching all of our chests. We're skinny. They move us to a new table- one of many that were open, making it obvious they forgot about us earlier. My dad bites into the Cracked Organic Egg pizza and he finds himself with a big egg shell in his mouth. Not just a little piece, a big piece. We tell the waiter. He says "ok", and takes away the pizza and napkin that my dad spit the egg shell into. He offers a free dessert. We decline. Not only do they still charge us for the pizza, they bill us for the appetizer they gave us earlier. I will never be back.

I met some friends here for dinner before we headed to a concert. We didn't get to spend much time here and only tried one pizza - the pepperoni with truffle oil. But the pizza was really good; lots of pepperoni and I liked the thin chewy crust. The wine list was fairly extensive and, surprisingly, they had my favorite Italian red wine on the menu - Barbera - which I never find at other restaurants. I'm giving this place an extra star just for carrying that wine.

I was craving pizza and discovered this place right around the corner from my hotel. What a find! Really good pizza and wine list. I had a wonderful meal. While the place was buzzing there was still plenty of room at the bar. Plus, the weather was nice and they had the doors to the outside open, so a nice breeze was flowing in.

Servers were great, but had to repeat information multiple times because of the noise levels. We ordered the bruschetta (excellent bread) and pepperoni pizza, which was slathered with truffle oil making it slick. It ruined the nice thin crust pizza. :(

  • Great food but front of house help!
    ChikindVIP
    Dined on 9/20/2014
First the good: pizzas are excellent, nice reasonably priced wine list, interesting combinations and well presented. However, the front of the house needs LOTS of work. We waited 45 minutes for a table after our reservation time. After being seated, it took some time for our server to arrive. Never brought water until we asked. Seems like a place to share food, then all of the appetizers and pizzas came out at the same time so there wasn't really room on the table for everything. So great for the food, but you need to be extra patient with the service.

I chose this based on Open Table reviews. Overall, our experience was solid. Very nice atmosphere and ambiance with very good service. It is exactly what it touts itself as -- a contemporary pizzeria. It's really the best way to describe it. I eat fish, but not other meat so I was bummed there weren't non-meat pasta options. And, there were more "white pizza" options than red sauce pizzas. They politely "converted" a white pizza to a red sauce pizza. (Little skimpy on toppings.) It was solid, but let's face it -- we all have our favorite pizzas and styles. I am coming to realize that Neapolitan-style pizza is not my favorite. If you go, reserve a booth -- looked much more comfortable and inviting.

La Madia is a one of Chicago's great treasures. My first visit to La Madia was about 6 months ago with friends. It was on a Friday night, so the restaurant was much more packed than this last occasion. I was pleasantly pleased to find that just as with the last time, the services was excellent, the food remarkable and I left once again knowing that I will be coming back again and again. The food offerings are really unique and made deliciously with quality ingredients. The wait staff is attentive (but not too much) , friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. I had a dessert wine that was to die for! I bought along a friend who had never been and now she vows to come back too. I highly recommend!

The restaurant design is rather sterile and modern without a warm or welcoming feeling. This place came highly recommended for thin crust pizza so we tried a few different pies. The pizza was greasy and the sausage had a strange taste. The service was great, very knowledgeable wait stuff, but won't be back as there are plenty of other better pizza places in the neighborhood.

We love the pizza at La Madia and we CRAVE the dipping sauce from their Spinach & Taleggio Fondue with Truffle Oil. We always get the sauce (it's creamy green in color) and dip the crust from the pizza in it. They charge us $5 for the sauce alone but it's SO worth it. Truffle Oil makes everything better. We rarely dine in, but we were pleased to find that it was nicely and comfortably decorated. It was chic but inviting - especially with the open kitchen. Most of the servers were wonderful but our primary server seemed as if she wasn't into people. She didn't make any conversation and her facial expressions seemed unenthusiastic. It provided a point of amusement whenever she happened by our table. She put our pizza in a togo box upsidedown.

If you want casual yet elegant with good food in a big city, this is a find. It was pizza and pasta in Chicago but not Chicago style pizza.
