While most of the tables are close together, it didn't seem to be much of an issue from a noise level. However, if you wanted to, you could easily hear your neighbor's conversation. Besides that, La Grotta is fantastic - the food and service are top notch.

IF YOU ARE IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA OF RICHMOND, LA GROTTA IS NOT TO BE MISSED. THE STAFF AT LA GROTTA HAS BEEN EXPERTLY TRAINED AND THE FOOD FAR SURPASSES ANY IN THE RICHMOND AREA. WHEN SOMEONE ASKS ME WHERE TO GET THE BEST SEAFOOD IN TOWN, IT IS ALWAYS LA GROTTA. (YES IT IS AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT, BUT IT IS THE BEST FISH ANYWHERE AROUND). PASTA IS FANTASTIC.

Pardon the short review. Just go; La Grotta's classic menu, excellent service, charming atmosphere, and decent wine list (a bit pricey on the wines, though!) promise a delightful meal. I had the Gnocchi al Filetto di Pomodoro (Homemade potato dumpling pasta in tomato filet, garlic and olive oil sauce), and my friend ordered the Agnolotti alla Panna (Homemade ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta cheese served in a light cream sauce): both were precisely as they should be. The gnocchi had a soft, friendly texture and the sauce had a simple, elegant flavor. The sauce and filling for my friend's ravioli were delightfully creamy and flavorful; you could taste the full cream ricotta. We also ordered a side of spinach with roasted garlic cloves and olive oil: fabulous--although a tad oily. To finish, we had a dessert sampler of the chocolate mousse cake, the coconut cake, and the tiramisu. Although tiramisu can hardly get better than what we tasted, the coconut cake was even more special. The service was unobtrusive, helpful, knowledgeable about the menu items, and the food arrived without much wait at all. GO to this restaurant and enjoy a fabulous meal (I don't think anything less than fabulous is possible).

Very nice spot in a historic district that moves the diner back to yesteryear. Nicely laird out with somewhat secluded wine cellar area with tables. Service is professional and food prepared very well. Specials exist not on the menu. Food delicious. Nicely priced wine list.

The soup special was great! However, the flash fried calamari was soggy, the peppercorn steak too peppery, the sole was not well cooked and my wife's dish (forgotten which is was) was drowning in cheese. Server, after describing the specials, was totally unsure of the prices.

Exceptional food and the best Italian cuisine in Richmond that is the closest to what you would find in Italy at the better restaurants. All the dishes and ingredients -- vegetables, pasta and sauces, meats, and fish -- are excellent. Homemade desserts are scrumptious, especially the coconut and strawberry cakes.

Went to support restaurant week and the food was okay. Nothing to write home about and I probably won't go back. Maybe I just ordered wrong but the dinner was less than satisfying. On top of that we waited as least 20 min for a table and we had a reservation and then at least 30 min between when we finished our first course and when the second course came out.

We were here for Fall Richmond Restaurant week, all the food we ordered were good, but the sausage stuffed quails were super, juicy and flavorful. The pannacotta I had was nicely done as well, at just the right level of sweetness. Service was decent.

Food was outstanding and expertly prepared, plated, and delivered. Great service also made this night a worthwhile and memorable one indeed. It was a little loud and was constantly busy since the layout was a bit strange and we were seated very near to the kitchen. Even with that, though, this is a solid 4-4.5 star pick! We will definitely be back again sometime when we come up with another excuse to indulge :-)

This was our first time at La Grotta, but won't be our last. In addition to great service and great food, they have complimentary parking in the garage on Virginia St, which is a big plus in Shockoe Slip. We went during Restaurant Week and the menu had great choices and large portions. We each had a glass of wine - the Chardonnay was excellent. My husband had the pasta appetizer - spinach ravioli with a delicious cream sauce and gnocchi with tomato sauce. The ravioli was super. All pasta is homemade. The swordfish carpaccio was excellent. We had salmon with balsamic glaze and veal marsala which were both perfectly prepared. We both had tiramisu for dessert. In short an excellent dinner with faultless service. We will definitely go back!

We enjoyed this experience very much. The server, John, knew the menu and was very attentive and pleasant. The food was absolutely delicious, much more than we expected after viewing their web site. Our hat is off to the chef for a meal that was far superior, in our experience, to TV Chef Ramsey's NY restaurant. La Grotta's web site doesn't do their establishment justice, they need to get a different web master. The only complaint is there is not sufficient parking for the number of restaurants in the small locality. We parked 30 feet from a tow sign and there was a car in front of us and we still got a $60 ticket, it's a rip! The police have got to lighten up or get more specific with their signs.

Our son, a student at U of Richmond found La Grotta and raved. We went as a group of six. Suffice to say all the food in the restaurant is made onsite except the ice cream. Bread and pasta all made on site. We enjoyed a great bottle of wine. We were already planning the graduation party there when the check arrived and there were 3 problems: 1) When we ordered our meal the server asked which salad would we like, as if it was included with the meal. It wasn't - everything is ala carte. Salads are $8 per. 2) One person asked for sparking water and the whole table was poured glasses and refilled constantly. $5.50 a bottle. 3)The tip was listed on the check in Italian and hand written as 20% and assessed on the tax as well as the food. Why?

Food was prepared by chef (owner) Tony and was done to a "T". Medium rare filet was perfect as was the lamb chop. Our server, John, was very knowledgeable about the menu and exactly how the food was prepared. Never rushed us and was very atentative. For me the best was the pineapple cake Tony made. I could have eaten the whole cake! This is a place you should not miss if you like fine dining.

Personal note...the carpaccio was delicious...a must have..

The last time I visited La Grotta was for a romantic dinner. It was wonderful, we were seated in the "grotta" and had wonderful food and service. This time, I visited for a luncheon with colleagues. Once again, the food and service were wonderful. This is one restaurant that over the years has been consistent in its commitment to service and fresh, original food offerings. My friend who has recently returned from a trip abroad, sat down and said "this is like being back in Italy!"
