Diner Reviews
  • "Physically and aesthetically top shelf. The light floral scent that caresses you when you enter a magical room of spectacular blossoms is hypnotizing. The excellent amuse bouche and the gougere get you excited. But then...my sweetbread and wild mushroom app was so salty it had to be prepared anew. Then my scallop entree was ever so slightly overcooked. That's a cardinal sin Nothing besides the gougere & truffles brought down the house though. The desserts were very good but they sounded better than the actuality delivered. So all in all I thought "c'mon guys, I KNOW you can do better" I'd go back to see if they can. They've survived an unabashedly expensive offering since the sixties. That along with the intoxicating aromas deserve it."

  • "Not having visited La Grenouille for several years, I found this Anniversary-day dinner as pleasant and satisfying as my last visit. Beautiful floral arrangements, attentive waitstaff, low noise level, and delicious food were highights of the evening. The sweetbreads appetizer, halibut main course, and chocolate souffle were all delicious. Keep it going!"

  • "This is an old standby that has stood the test of time. It deserves a top rating from Michelin. The service is the "best" and as far as a Chocolate Souffle is concerned.... none better."

  • "Best service, menu and venue out side of Paris. Service in front is outstanding from the moment you walk in the door."

  • "As elegant as ever. Three course lunch for $66 well worth the difference from a pretty good but not spectacular business lunch for, say, $45."

  • "Great food, great ambience (the flowers and decorations are outstanding) and excellent service. This is my favorite restaurant!!!"

  • "Memorable food and service. Ambiance a bit edgy, not as reserved or gracious, but memories linger of a classier day."

  • "This place is a NY institution - and deservedly so. The entire dining experience here is 5 star and an absolute joy. The perfect place for a special occasion."

  • "Just the best!!! Don't waste time looking for another french restaurant."

  • "Service was fabulous as always. Food not so much - which was very disappointing. Not up to usual excellence. Dover Sole was laden with Paprika and mustard sauce was a bit overpowering. Pate was underwhelming. Always has been a go to place, but will have to re-think that for our next trip to NYC."

  • "Seating extremely tight...one dines with ones neighbors...food is actually pedestrian {baked clams a soupy disaster] Lamp cord a nuisance service pleasant, but the entire experience does not warrant a repeat visit and I cannot recommend to my friends; expensive and showy, but not really good enough. "

  • "I was in NY celebrating my 16th year wedding anniversary. I love french food and wanted someplace nice for this special occasion. This was the perfect spot and worth every penny. I had the frog legs and a coconut soufflé and my husband had the dover sole. Outstanding! "

  • "La Grenouille well deserves its reputation as one of New York's finest French restaurants. The cuisine was outstanding, the service was perfect, and the ambiance was beautiful and romantic. It is expensive, but less so than some of its peers. I would recommend it highly to anyone who wants to have the highest quality dining experience available. Quiet too."

  • "Service: in the old style without the "stuffiness". The ambience and décor was as it has always been, a fortune in flowers, many mirrors and subdued but adequate lighting. The place was packed when we arrived, but it was still quiet. The feel was romantic but done without excess. Food. We both had the Pâté which was excellent. . I had a Salmon Tatar which came wrapped with a salmon cover. The Tatar filling had caviar as well. He had Bass; perfectly cooked and seasoned.. For dessert we both had Grand Marnier Soufflés which were excellent and light been. This is a must. Go there for classic cuisine, extremely well done, well presented and well served. Everyone who loves food should go there a few times. Note: Jackets are required. "

  • "We were celebrating our marriage and this was the perfect spot. We arrived early and we were immediately seated at the bar for some nice champagne. The bartender was nice and knowledgable and we enjoyed speaking to him. Dinner was amazing and the service quick and friendly, just as we expected. This will definitely be our anniversary spot."

  • "We had a nice evening at La Grenouille. We had an early 5:00 reservation in order to get to the theater. We were the only ones in the restaurant until 6:30, but it got quite busy by 7:15. The food was excellent, we both had the lobster ravioli and the lamb entrée. The soufles were wonderful. The portion sizes were large for a high end French restaurant. What stands out in my mind was the service. The service was absolutely phenomenal."

  • "We enjoyed our lunch so much that we went back again for a second time in one week! The cheese and dessert souffles are not to be missed. They were better than I had in Paris. All male waitstaff in tuxedo attire that have all proudly served at the restaurant for years (some 30+). Impeccable, fantastic French food. There is a reason this was Jackie O's favorite restaurant. Highly recommend. Expensive so be prepared to pay $150 for a bottle of wine. Lunch pre fixe is a better deal vs. dinner."

  • "The last of the great French restaurants of an earlier era, and still going strong. One of our best meals of the year. The quality of the classic food and service and the overall feeling of comfort are not equalled anywhere else in New York. Hopefully it will be around forever, at least as long as we are around.!"

  • "This restaurant is so special. It is simply gorgeous inside. The food is delicious. The Dover sole is wonderful and the chocolate soufflés are out of this world. They seal the show. Best soufflés I have ever had."

  • "This is my favorite place to eat in New York. The décor is beautiful (the flowers are gorgeous), the food is excellent, and the service is unsurpassed. They make you feel really special. It's pricey, but for a special occasion, it's definitely worth it. We were there for lunch, and loved every minute."

  • "La Grenouille is one of those few remaining places where the tablecloths are bleached and starched daily, and the silver (real of course) is polished with the same frequency. In addition, just to complete the picture, men need to wear jackets, and ladies - huge strings of pearls (kidding...well, not quite). Otherwise, the food is simply great. To use the word "food" is a bit of disservice here. The art of food preparation is to the level attainable only by very few heavenly gifted French chefs. Magnifique. À propos, prices too. The service keeps the same high level with the staff exceeding the numbers of the patrons. No much of atmosphere, though, unless you get ecstatic with starched tablecloths, silver cutlery, and huge pearls."

  • "We dine at La Grenouille a few times a year. Each time is as consistent as the last. The food is savory. Mouth watering. The ambience is impeccable. The staff is always courteous, helpful and willing to make a recommendation. I cannot say enough about our experiences here. We look forward to our next dining experience! This is a true gem. One of the last traditional French restaurants in NYC. It's an institution, one that I hope remains open for a very long time."

  • "My husband and I were bowled over by the level of excellence in the quality of cuisine and service at Le Grenouille . ( We dinned at Le Bernadin the day after and it paled by comparison in both aspects!) We both ordered the seared foie gras for starters and it was cooked to perfection. My duck entree was outstanding, which I liked slightly more than my husband's daily special pheasant. I had the Mont Blanc for dessert, a heavenly concoction of pureed chestnut. My hubby's Grand Manier souffle was the best souffle we've ever had. The impeccable old school yet friendly service topped off a very special dinner experience. We are looking forward to bringing our daughter and son in law, who are also foodies, here."

  • "Treat yourself to La Grenouille - the flowers, the food , the service- this is fine dining, but without the fussiness and pretentiousness of some " top " restaurants today."

  • "The restaurant is very traditional French cuisine and service. A bit stuffy, and servers were very "down to business" and efficient. Service was pleasant, but not warm or personal. Not on my list of top favorites to return to next time I'm in NYC, A good place to go at least once in your life."

  • "We had heard about La Grenouille before making a trip to New York City and were so delighted that we put this on our itinerary. We chose to eat there for lunch and it was a delightful respite from the busy day.. So elegant, relaxing...the service was impeccable and the food was delicious. The atmosphere was quiet and subdued...such a break from the noise of the city."

  • "I had never been to La Grenouille before, even though I have experienced most of the great NY restaurants. This was a true gem, perhaps the last of the old fashioned French restaurants. Service was excellent, the staff was very attentive and warm. Everybody spoke French which was an added value for my wife who is not very fluent in English. The atmosphere was reminiscent of a true Parisian restaurant. The food was excellent and although they have an impressive and expensive wine list, it was a great thing that they had very good French wine by half-bottles which is very important if you are not willing to spend a fortune in wine or not willing to consume a full bottle. The Grand-Marnier souffle is something not to be missed"

  • "A perfect meal for two before the theater. Notably nice ambiance that gave me pause to think of redesigning my dining room at home. Terrific service from well trained staff. Excellent food with a rare touch of finesse. Lots of extras that rounded out the evening and made it a worthy night of dining. I really had a great time being there."

  • "It was our anniversary and so a special day and La Grenouille made it extra special. The service was fantastic , the food excellent and all in all a lovely experience. The duck confit was fantastic and the captain chose excellent wines for our meal. When the table next to us became available he asked if we would like to move to it as it was in the corner and made the move easy. We were treated like we were regulars. We would highly recommend this restaurant and are ready to go back."

  • "Room Temperature was too warm early. Here is the summary: 1. Fois Gras - possibly the best I've ever had 2. Mushroom rissoto - over salted, too much cheese. Less of both and some truffle would have gone a long way 3. Dover Sole - overrated - lot of paprika and the fish tasted "off". Sauce was good, but sauce is a compliment 4. Ox tail - very good - fall off the bone tender 5. Chocolate soufflé - very good - filling tasted oddly of pudding however. My chief complaint would be the pace of the meal. We were served each course on top of one another - even though we told the waiter we had 2.5 hours. We were served our 3 course meal in under 1hr. There were no additional fillers or small plates in between, and the coffee buiscuits were stale."

  • "The food was good, but not worth the price. Adding a tip line for a line captain was not appreciated. $800 for 4 Prix Fixe with a "$20" bottle of wine for $90 seems a bit high and since we had early reservations, it was clear they wanted us out to get the next seating in."

  • "I could not wait to dine at LaGrenouille - we were seated in a banquet - the service was wonderful and the food was very good BUT.....we got there at 9:45pm coming from the theatre and 11pm it was a ghost town - there was nobody in the restaurant except us - they want you in and they want you out - our appetizers and entrees came out very quickly - Although they were very good - I felt that at the 11pm hour they wanted you out of there - it was $350 for 2 people with a $70 bottle of wine - this place is for early diners"

  • "Wonderful evening. Probably would have been better with a group (we were 2) who could have ordered from the wine list. The wine pairings could have been better for what we ordered. With 4 or more we would have had a bottle or 2. All the ambience and little touches like soup and dessert treats were unexpected and fine. Don't miss out on the prix fixe menu."
