Diner Reviews
  • "Our group loves meeting here for lunch. We usually have the round table. This time we expected 10, too many for a round table. We shall return!"

  • "We decided to go to La Gran Terraza to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We got married at the Immaculata church and thought we would be a little nostalgic to go to USD campus for lunch. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from a restaurant on a college campus but was pleasantly surprised. The food was very good, especially the fresh cucumber lemonade. My husband had the bleu cheese burger, which was very tasty. I had the Bing Cherry Salad with grilled chicken, which was great. The service was fantastic and they even surprised us with a special anniversary dessert. We would definitely go back for lunch."

  • "The food took too long and the fries were totally over done"

  • "The dining room is exquisite: floor to ceiling arched window, white table cloths and a feeling of spaciousness. We've had lunch or brunch here several times. In all cases, the food was very well prepared and appears locally sourced. My favorites are always the variety of seasonal salads. This time it was a great spinach strawberry salad, but on other occasions I've enjoyed a golden beet salad and a fresh berry salad. The protein selections are good quality, nicely seasoned and not overdone. The hanger steak and catfish were delicious. Our favorite waitress, Jeannie, is both efficient and friendly."

  • "The buffet menu included mahi mahi; however, there wasn't any when we go to the buffet. The only choice available was steak which was good."
    Dined on 7/29/2014
  • "The atmosphere is understated elegance in extreme comfort with a spectacular view. The preparation is top quality as is the service all at a very affordable price."
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "La Gran Terraza is an unexpected gem of a restaurant. It has casual elegance, an unbeatable ambience, great views, and a wonderful lunch buffet at a reasonable price. They offer a good selection on their menu if nothing on the buffet appeals to you...with an exceptional selection of lunch salads. Location on the campus of beautiful USD is a usual pleasant surprise for first-time guests. Easy valet parking is usually available. Special holiday and other dinner and brunches are worth a try...often with entertainment. We had them cater a Sunday brunch for 75 people for our 50th wedding anniversary and it was outstanding. Great place for birthday celebrations too."

  • "We were the only ones eating lunch outside. Maybe that's why we felt we got forgotten. I actually had to get up and look for a waiter to pay our bill."
    Dined on 7/23/2014
  • "First the food is very fresh and well prepared. Second both the room with parquet floors, wood fraimed windows and the view of Mission bay is superb. And the price for thr lunch buffet is quite reasonable. Unless you're an alumni, you have probably never heard of the place. Pluss there are occasional wine and theam events as well as classes."

  • "Enjoyed a wonderful Sunday brunch with music...great food....great service!! It was a little difficult to find the place on the campus and know where to park....I would use the valet service next time! I would definitely return again!!"

  • "My group of retired co-workers have met there for lunch several times. Each time is better than the one before."

  • "They have valet service since parking is tricky on the USD campus. It is reasonably priced and has a nice lunch buffet. Check hours before going."

  • "Food was outstanding, service was friendly, fast and attentive. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone attending a function at the university of San Diego"

  • "This was my second visit but this time I brought two good friends along and they were as impressed as I was on my first lunch. Staff remembered me which was very nice. It's difficult to decide on menu since it is extensive with each item ( I'm sure )prepared and served perfectly. The desserts are "out of this world"... congratulations from three ladies who indulged ! Interesting and tasty variations on lemonade also."

  • "The food and service were outstanding. We had a wonderful table by the window. The mini strawberry shortcakes were excellent. We will be back for sure and Jeanne is a excellent waitress."

  • "We sincerely enjoyed our day there. Our waitress was very curtious, freindly and atteneded to our needs. Will definitely go there again."

  • "We have been to the gran terraza many times...always wonderful. The ambiance is absolutely wonderful, the food great, and the service stellar. We started going when our son was a student at the University of San Diego, but now enjoy going as a family with our graduate. The value is also unbelievable; the average cost for everything from wine to food is much less than any comparable venue."

  • "We booked a table for Father's Day Brunch and were pleasantly surprised. We were quickly seated outside where the view was phenomenal. The staff was super friendly. We were expecting good food, but what we got was exceptional! The buffet was well kept and the options were plentiful. There were even children's options for my 4 1/2 year old and 2 year old. We particularly enjoyed the seafood spread. Their ceviche was fantastic and the shellfish (crab and shrimp) was very fresh. The desserts were absolutely delicious and sensible. Because our family spent quite a bit of time in Europe, we really appreciated how the desserts were not overly sweet! La Gran Terraza knows what they are doing! A notable hidden gem!"

  • "I love La Gran Terraza. The food is excellent (you have to try to grilled shrimp caesar salad!), the service is outstanding, and the view is lovely..."

  • "First visit and will definitely be making Gran Terrazo a super "meeting for lunch" with friends.... a delightful change from the usual restaurant experience. I happened to dine alone but at no time did I feel uncomfortable. In fact I felt that the entire staff from room manager to all servers went out of their way to chat in a way that made me "one of the "regular diners" ".... very special people. Enjoyed my wee meal ( especially the dessert! ) and the view very much. Glad to have found you; an exciting secret place that shouldn't be so hidden !"

  • "Loved the Prime Rib buffet: Views of Tecolote Canyon and the ocean were gorgeous. The wine list is excellent and outrageously reasonable. The restaurant is quiet, elegant and well-managed. Waiters and waitresses friendly and attentive. Delightful evening."

  • "Food was very good. Setting unique and tables spaced well so there was plenty of room to move around buffet tables Service was good but servers kept removing my coffee cup so every time I went to get food I was afraid our table would be cleared (it wasn't as though we stayed a long time and ate huge amounts)"

  • "I took m mom here for Mother's Day and was pleasantly surprised with the experience. The high ceilings and many windows create an ambiance that is open and light, with great views from any table. The manager and his staff bent over backwards to ensure guests had a good experience, and the food was delicious. The only glitch in our day was that our reservation confirmation advertised for $6 a plate less than what the restaurant was actually charging.... this appeared to be a communication issue with Open Table, as the menu offered on the reservation site did have the correct prices. The manager immediately corrected our bill. "

  • "As a USD alumn, I was surprised that I had not been to La Gran Terraza before last Friday. (Of course, I was a student at USD long before La Gran Terraza was there!) A friend of mine has been telling me about it for quite awhile, and I'm so glad we finally went. It was the perfect setting for an elegant lunch. The dining room is bright and cheery with a lovely view. We both had the buffet for lunch, and you can't beat it. The buffet was not overwhelming ... there were three of four delectable choices of salads and entrees - and lots of little (and delicious) dessert bites. My favorites were the salmon and tri tip, the grilled asparagus caprese-ish salad, and the lavender crème brulee. I'm already planning my next visit!"

  • "I have always been impressed by the wonderful service and food here. The woman I took here is going to come here more often. She loved it too."

  • "Decent food. Portions were a little small. Service was okay. Server was a tad informal. She was friendly but did not seem to have great knowledge of the menu (at least the one question I asked). We had to ask for bread more than once. I have been here for the lunch buffet and it is MUCH better. Not sure I'd go to LGT for dinner again though."

  • "They have a great buffet, but I didn't have that this time. I had brown butter sole with truffle ravioli, broccolini, and wild mushrooms. I was very satisfied with my decision. "

  • "The brunch offerings were outstanding, well prepared good quality food!"

  • "Hi, I took the time to fill out survey because although service was good and so was food I don't like being taken advantage of when it comes to pricing. You had advertised $39.95 for adults for brunch on Easter both on website and on confirmation and when we came in you switched prices and even billed us $42.95 on our bill when every print advertisement was for $39.95. We had to bring it to the manager's attention and of course he changed it to reflect the advertised price, but I wonder how many people got taken advantage of. That wasn't right to switch prices at the last minute."

  • "We had a wonderful Easter brunch at La Gran Terraza. I fully recommend this place to anyone visiting the University of San Diego. I have been to Easter brunch at the Del Coronado (another local San Diego favorite for Easter brunch) and I must say the food is of equal taste and presentation at La Gran Terraza for a little less money. The atmosphere at La gran Terraza is wonderful as well, with great natural lighting and a wonderful view of Tecelote Canyon. "

  • "This delicious farm to table buffet included soup, two salads, shrimp scampi pasta, steamed vegetables, fork tender prime rib, mashed red potatoes, caramelized onions and sauteed mushrooms, a cheese platter. Be sure to save room for the extravagant dessert buffet featuring blueberry cobbler, lemon tarts, opera cake and more. The servers are friendly and efficient. The view is exceptional. What more could you ask for?"

  • "We loved our dinner at La Gran Terraza last Friday night! The food was delicious, the quality excellent. Our server could not have been better, and wanted us to have a wonderful dining experience. This restaurant is amazing, right in the heart of the USD campus, which is beautiful. Palm trees, beautiful architecture and a great campus vibe. Can't wait to go again, what a find."
