Diner Reviews
  • "In the 25 years we have lived in Santa Rosa, La Gare has remained our favorite restaurant here. We have spent nearly every wedding anniversary having dinner there. Jackie and the wait staff are always gracious and helpful. They take time to interact and converse, making us feel like welcome guests. The food is outstanding and the wine is wonderful. There is nothing to dislike about this gem. I would also recommend going to one of their winemaker dinners (although please arrange for someone to drive you home). We went once and it was such an enjoyable experience. The food was fantastic and plentiful as well as the wine. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to real fine dining by the best people around."

  • "La Gare is ALWAYS good. Best food in town. Try the Chateau Brian for two....Its the best piece of meat you will ever taste anywhere!"

  • "We love La Gare. I have been going there since I was a teenager for my B-days. Now we go there for almost every special occasion. It is also my twin son's favorite place to spend their B-day. My son Tyler wants to be a chef and have a restaurant like La Gare some day. The food is always wonderful. The staff is great and fun to spend the evening with. Thank you for all your the wonderful memories and terrific food."

  • "The place was packed and the tables too close. Noise becomes overwhelming. Diners bring toddlers so everyone else must deal with screaming and banging. Near us, sat a woman convinced that she was very important and everyone else wanted to hear her. It isn't fair, but either accept it as part of today's dining, or eat at home. Waiters at La Gare are overburdened on busy nights and service becomes spotty and rushed. College age bussers are always friendly and attentive and this goes a long way to make up for lack of attention from the waiters. Food is good; not inspired...nothing jumps out at you...but vegetables are fresh, soups are good, meat is prepared properly, sauces well finished. The portions are good; deserts satisfy. Good place!"

  • "we have been here many times. my wife and I always enjoyed excellent food & service. some people complain it's too old school I love old school I don't get the check with my salad."

  • "Arrived at the restaurant at the scheduled time (8:30) on Sunday evening and the door was locked and the lights were off. The reservation system shouldn't accept bookings for a closed restaurant. The required ratings are obviously not accurate since we never dined there. There should be other rating choices available."

  • "After many years we returned to La Gare. The experience was identical, maybe even the menu. Soup and salad are included with every entree or can be bought a la carte for larger portions. Food quality and service still good, kind of old world steakhouse style, right down to the included creamed spinach. Prices on the high side, imo. Spectacular? No. Serviceable? Absolutely."

  • "It was a long time since we had eaten at La Gare. We went because of restaurant week and were not disappointed. Service was outstanding. The food was very good, classic french done right. We'll be back."

  • "The restaurant was getting busy and our reservations were noted with direct access to a great little booth. Everyone was extremely helpful, friendly, and talkative. Food was fabulous, great wine selections. Will be back!"

  • "We took advantage of the Sonoma Restaurant Week promotion while we were in town for a wine tasting event. Small soup and salad with choice of king salmon or filet mignon and dessert. The meal was delicious and service excellent."

  • "We went to La Gare during Sonoma Restaurant Week and we were expecting a true French experience complete with fine wines, delicious over-the-top food, and a romantic ambience. But what we got was less than impressive! The Restaurant Week deal was a 3-course meal for $29.00 and what we got was not even worth that. The salad was tasty but tiny. The entrees were mediocre: salmon with a salty canned soup-like sauce, and a very small fillet mignon, again with a salty canned-like sauce. And for dessert the Chocolate Mousse could have come from Safeway. Only two things we ordered were of better quality - our glass of red wine and the Escargot that we ordered off the menu. We were so disappointed because we wanted this to be our " find"!"

  • "I had a 22 oz bottle of IPA beer & John our server kept it in the ice bucket till it was empty. That's just one example of their excellent service. We'll visit again."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner!! Going there for restaurant week is our favorite because of their specials. The salmon was the best we'd ever eaten!! The filet mignon was excellent too. We both choose the crème brulee for dessert because it's always so good. The side for dinner was a choice of rice or potatoes and we chose one of each. The potatoes were so good we ordered an extra batch to go. We love eating at La Gare's because the food and service are excellent. I wish we could afford it more often!!"

  • "La Gare is OK, but really just OK. This last time we went there, it struck me how the quality of the food is out of alignment with the pricing. The wine list is awesome, but the ceasar is over-garlicky and my salmon was over done. Given the prices and the atmosphere, it feels like the food should be superb, but really is mediocre."

  • "We enjoyed another great meal at La Gare. The waiter took care of my wife from the gluten free menu items. Everything was excellent."

  • "I read some previous negative reviews but decided to try this restaurant anyway. Big mistake. Nobody was there to greet us at the door so our waiter sat us next to a loud table of eight rather than a quieter table -- probably because it was his area. The place looks like it hasn't changed for at least 40 years -- hard uncomfortable chairs and bad decor. The food, unfortunately, matched the setting -a tasteless salad, a tiny filet which had no flavor, overcooked vegetables, etc. Only eatable food was the salmon and creme brulee. There are so many better places to eat in wine country that we were surprised this place managed to stay open. It is a relic that should be put out of it -- and it's customers -- misery."

  • "We have been going to La Gare for over 20 years and have a wonderful time whenever we dine there. It's fun to have a traditional "Julia Child-esque" French restaurant along with the great New Age California restaurants in the area. So if you want to bypass the kale and organic field greens one night and splurge on some good old fashioned garlic and butter treats, this is the place for you. Service and ambience also great."

  • "We usually find that average scores above 4 on Open Table correlate with a good experience. This time that was not the case. We had a shrimp/prawn (Bordelaise) hors d'oeuvre that was passable. Our main courses, sole almondine and a special of the day halibut both had the same tasteless brown sauce and seemed of a quality about the equivalent of a TV dinner. The accompanying vegetables were similarly without distinction. We felt cheated by the high prices for low quality fare. The service was by a supercilious waiter who seemed in a hurry and indifferent to our experience. This was the first meal we ate on our trip; we had 13 more meals and all were far more enjoyable and satisfying"

  • "We were very happy with all our food selections. Everything had a wonderful taste, nothing over spiced, and not too salty. The waitperson was personable but not pushy which we appreciated. Thank you for a pleasant evening. Cheers, Mary Basham"

  • "Too many tables in a very small area. Food okay. It feels like they want to rush you in and out just as quick as they can."

  • "Have been to La Gare several times mostly for special occasions like birthdays or anniversaries. It has always been outstanding. This time is was just ok. Maybe because it was a dark and rainy night had dulled things a bit. My wife had the sole almondine and it was just fair. I had the specialty of rack of lamb. At $36 it should have been outstanding..however, even as it was cooked perfectly, nice and pink with a bit of crust. Sadly, the meat had no taste. Close your eyes and it could have been undistinguishable. The caesar salad was bland with too much mayo. Need I do on. Might go back but not for a while."

  • "We do love La Gare but it must of been an off night. The appetizer, a crab cake that is usually so delicious was very under-cooked.The soup was very salty (everyone at the table agreed). My Prawns sautéed Bordelaises, which is one of my favorite things were soggy and too much breading, flour or whatever,so kind of disappointing ,oh and my glass of white wine was warm! I think it will be awhile before we come back........too many other places to try. I have to say the service was exceptional as usual! And we really appreciated not being rushed as it was long ago when we stopped going because they hurried you through dinner at top speed! but we felt very relaxed and lots of time. My husband did love his Filet de Boeuf Wellington Tenderloin !"

  • "Since I moved up to Santa Rosa five years ago, I have been trying all the restaurants I could. La Gare is by far the best of the best! It started out as my favorite and is still. I had not eaten there for about the last two years (too busy trying out all the others!), and it remains the same high standard. :-)"

  • "Classic French cuisine, tableside Caesar salad, Chateaubriand for two and Cherries Jubilee flambe, just perfect. Clean, romantic setting, ambience a little tired . Tiny tables. Our server good but perhaps tired from the busy Valentine's weekend, did not acknowledge our anniversary, although the other server on duty did."

  • "This is a great local restaurant. The food is consistantly good and they have a great wine list. The menu and wine list are so well priced, it makes it one of the best values for a complete dining experience in Santa Rosa. La Gare is known for being a romantic restaurant, but I like to bring my whole family here. We all love La Gare!"

  • "Sunday was our second time for dinner and it was fabulous. The service is impecable, the food divine and the atmosphere is lovely. I am normally rather critical as I do quite a bit of cooking myself and I expect good food when I go out to dinner. All dinners come with soup and salad and they are both delicous. The portions are perfect. We ordered a crabcake for an appetizer that was out of this world. I had the Tourenedo de Boeuf a L'estragon. The meat was cooked perfectly, and the sauce was to die for. This coming from someone that rarel;y orders beef. Mu dining partner had the salmon that was a special the night. Everything was perfect, and the prices are very reasonable. Do yourself a favor and try this restaurant!"

  • "We have been going to La Gare for 20years and it is always the same: great food, friendly and efficient service and all at a reasonable price. Be sure to try the Beef Wellington, it is like no other. All others come in a way back second compared to La Gare. Soup and salad are included with dinner and the house wine is great. One of our favorite places."

  • "I used to love La Gare but something has happened. Had veal cordon bleu and it was tasteless to say the least. They then very graciously brought me crab cakes and they were complete mush. Vegetables were over cooked. The lemon tart however was fantastic but for $100 for the two us us that's quite disappointing. The waiters were very nice and tried to help immediately."

  • "I tend to pick places apart due having been in the business for many years. This place was perfect. I had absolutely no criticisms. The food and service were perfection all around. This will be my new favorite place to dine in Sonoma County!"

  • "I have spent a good portion of my life in Santa Rosa, but hadn't dined at La Gare until last week... We were warmly greeted and didn't wait long for our table. The restaurant was full - figured it was a good sign. However I noticed immediately the majority of the patrons were over 65 years old. There were also too many tables crammed together and there was no flow to the room. The service was good, our waiter was nice. Unfortunately the food looked and tasted like it came out of the frozen food aisle at Safeway. Maybe the old folks like it that way. I was far from impressed and the ingredients were as cheap as could be, that much was clear. I won't be back."
