Diner Reviews
  • "In the area for business and decided to try the restaurant based on internet ratings, over staying on the Riverwalk. Couldn't be happier. Everyone enjoyed their meals and I hadn't had Enchiladas Rojas de Queso that good in many years. If I ever get back to San Antonio, I will be back to La Fonda!"

  • "Had not been here in several years and I was delighted at the service and quality of food. I would recommend to anyone looking for Mexican food with a flare. A bit more expensive than your typical Mexican restaurant but the fare is not typical either. I had the fish tacos which came with a delightful cactus side dish. Well worth it. "

  • "We made a reservation for 6:00 pm. When we arrived, even though there were many empty tables, they took us to a table right outside the kitchen door and by the area where the wait staff gather. We couldn't even pull out one chair because there were staff mingling all around it. We asked to move, and they did allow us to move to another table. Our food, when delivered, was only lukewarm. The food was good, but not exceptional. It may have been better had it had been hot. Our waiter was not very attentive and came around and picked up any silverware that was not in our hands about halfway through our meal. We didn't know if they ran out of silverware and needed ours, or if it was his way of telling us to hurry."

  • "After reading the reviews on trip adviser we decided to eat a meal here the day before we left San Antonio.(lunch) We requested an outside table with our reservation and it was so peaceful and relaxing. Beautiful setting and the servers were some of the best we've ever had! I had the seafood special and it was amazing! We also had 3 types of salsa, the pineapple one was my favorite, fresh and all the food was beautifully presented. Dessert was a cake made with 3 types of milk, sooo good. After we went one last time to the Visitors center and spoke with April there, I mentioned we went here for lunch and she said isn't that a great place to eat? Best Margarita I had in San Antonio! (Prickly pear)"

  • "My friend and I very much enjoyed our dinner at La Fonda. We were visiting from the Boston area. We were seated promptly, served our drinks and given ample time to order our entrees. Everything was delicious and the service was great. I would come here all the time if I lived in San Antonio!"

  • "Another great experience at La Fonda! We had a group of 7 and were promptly seated outside (we had made a resrvation using OpenTable). Food was delicious and it was a beautiful evening outside on the patio. Would highly recommend!"

  • "We had a very good meal at La Fonda. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. We especially liked the fish tacos and the special appetizer."

  • "Asked for patio seating via Open Table and was told that they "don't do that" we would have to call instead. Why list on Open Table if you don't bother reading the reservation request? Food was OK - this is the 3rd visit that I have come away from feeling that I paid too much. Probably will be a while before we return and we were customers who went 2 - 3 times per month."

  • "We have had dinner here several times and always enjoyed it until this reservation. We were entertaining out of town guests and asked to be seated on the patio. Apparently most of the patio was being used for a private party and we could not sit outside. It would hav been nice to have been told when they call to confirm our reservation. This did not happen."

  • "grew up in main street area and had many good dinners here over the years, but most recent visit was very poor. long delay in bringing food out, food mediocre at best, prices high, very disappointing overall."

  • "I almost canceled our reservation because someone gave me a different recommendation but I was really glad we went to La Fonda. The service was excellent and we had a table with a lovely garden view. We had outstanding ceviche and little fish tacos as an appetizer. The tacos came with a tasty mango-flavored guacamole. For an entree, I had two delicious lamb chops, served with a delicate mole and some tomatillo sauce and a slaw. My companion was very happy with her duck tacos. I would definitely return to La Fonda."

  • "Food was excellent, service was okay, drinks were expensive but delicious. This place knows how to make a margarita! You could actually taste the alcohol. I'd rather pay a few more bucks to get a quality drink than a cheap drink that barely has any alcohol in it. Seriously the drinks were awesome! All and all, I will definitely be going back!"

  • "Food was great, especially the achiote fish special on coconut rice and the breaded steak. Service was ok. I think she had too many tables. Dirty carpet and out of date colors and decor inside made it less appealing. (The 80s called and they want their giant pastel Miami Vice murals back.) The patio looked lovely but it was raining."

  • "We attend almost once a week. The Sunday brunch food is always outstanding! We've had a few different servers and all have been okay - last weekend we got stuck with a server who didn't reciprocate any friendliness, but oh well. Without a doubt, Monica is the best server at this location...we actually look forward to seeing her when we go and always try to get in her section. The mimosa drink selection is great, we'd prefer a slightly bigger champagne flute - but who wouldn't! Overall, great place, good food, and a fun way to kick off Sunday Funday with friends."

  • "A great place to bring out-of-town guests, but locals also love this place, too. My sister was in town for a conference and they seated two of us at a four top on the patio on a very busy night, which was really nice of them. Another popular place in town wouldn't take a reservation for two and told me they won't seat parties of less than four on a patio. We were treated really well, as were all the other big and small groups. Inside is still nice, and I've heard lots of raves about brunch. We saw families, a rehearsal dinner and couples of all ages having a great time. My sister had the duck tacos and I had the mini gorditas with lump crab meat that was an app special really. Start with the nachos. The margs and desserts are terrific, too."

  • "All the traditional Mexican restaurant staples with some additional more unique options. All were delicious. Margaritas were excellent and there's a good tequila selection. Had a great outdoor seating area that we will be back to use when it warms up."

  • "It was Valentine's day and packed. Food was delicious, and love those chips and salsa! But when it came to dessert, I asked for the menu twice. The third time I reminded our waiter that I hadn't gotten the dessert menu yet, he said "we don't have one" - I'll tell you what they are. Had a good laugh after he left. We were in no rush, so went with the flow and eventually enjoyed the Tres Leches cake."

  • "The restaurant has been in existence for quite a while, and is picturesque. We ate outdoors in the courtyard at the back of the restaurant, and it was very pleasant. We were there for brunch, and the menu items were unique. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. Very good service and nice place."

  • "Since the current owners took over twenty years ago, this place has achieved and maintained a level of culinary excellence combined with charm and relaxed elegance. Almost everything from the kitchen is well done, and some of the specials are excellent. (My personal favourite: steak relleno.) The margaritas are good enough, the prices reasonable, the details always looked after and the service varies only between very good and impeccable. Inside the dining room, check out the beautiful Talavera pottery lining the walls high up; outside, enjoy the lushly relaxed courtyard."

  • "First of all, LaFonda is our favorite restaurant in San Antonio. Without a reservation (on a Sat night), the wait for a table at 7:30 was an hour. The food, service and ambiance is always excellent and this visit was no different. It's the one place we bring our out of town guests or suggest when going out with friends. The weather was nice and we were able to sit outside on the patio. On this night, they had their limited weekend menu. The lobster bisque was divine and we tried the lobster enchiladas for the first time. I usually (always) have the duck tacos, and regretted not having them. The lobster was very good, just not quite as good as the duck. The margaritas are made with fresh lime juice...yum."

  • "Being known as the oldest mexican food restaurant in San Antonio and family owned, we knew we had stumbled on something special. La Fonda on the main is located downtown in the original location since 1932. The food and service was exceptional. You can tell the owners take pride in their business, the food was fresh, homemade and delicious! Reading the history on the menu brought even more to the experience of dining here. We will definitely return and bring our friends!"

  • "We were visiting San Antonio for the weekend for my daughter's cross country race. I found LaFonda on Tripadvisor and made reservations. Earlier we visited downtown to see the Riverwalk and the Alamo which were nice but very touristy. We drove about 10 minutes out of downtown and found ourselves in a charming neighborhood at La Fonda. We parked for free and walked into a beautiful southwestern building nicely decorated for the holidays. The host was very attentive as we arrived for our reservation 30 minutes early. Our server, Shawn was wonderful. The food was fresh and delicious. My husband had the Veracruz and we had fish tacos. They were both fresh and very good. Highly recommend this restaurant."
