A word from La Fonda del Sol
La Fonda del Sol translates to “inn of the sun” and was first open from 1960 to the early 1970’s. The visionary “theme” restaurant was hailed as ahead of its time by many critics, with a menu that brought Latin and Spanish cuisine to New York for the first time in a fine dining setting.

Today, 47 years after its inception, La Fonda del Sol provides an unprecedented stage for modern Spanish cuisine in New York. Executive Chef Chris DeLuna reinterprets an expansive selection of dishes from across Spain, with a focus on tapas.

The split-level area consists of a bar room on the ground floor and the main dining room on the upper level, separated by an illuminated glass wall behind the bar. Reservations are accepted for the upstairs, main dining room only. If you have a PROMO CODE, please enter it in the special request box when making your reservation.

Diner Reviews
  • "Not typical for a Spanish tapas bar/ restaurant, Fonda serves modern takes on the classics. The portions are small, but the flavors are bold. Not as atmospheric as I would like, but comfortable nonetheless."

  • "Simply the best paella in NY. The chorizo, sweetest I have ever eater, and the rice are authentic and cooked to perfection. If you like Spanish food, this is your place. Come for dinner and sit in the back. While I don't usually focus on staff, our server was perfect. Attentive without being intrusive."

  • "I would really like to give this restaurant almost a 4, like 3.9. It really is quite good and for this area of town around Grand Central it's a standout with reasonable prices, a lovely dining room and a reasonable noise level. Great place for large groups to share tapas. Wait staff is extremely nice and helpful. I definitely would recommend and go again."

  • "i visited this restaurant recently with friends on a saturday at 6:30pm recently for an early dinner before an event. it took us close to 30 minutes to get waters and another 15 to get menus. the food was delicious so it was disappointing to have such terrible service. and, the slow service would make sense if we were in the caribbean or if the restaurant was packed full and our waiter was overwhelmed. but we were one of two tables when we were first sat and one of three tables seated by the time we had our dinner. the food was amazing though!"

  • "Otherwise pleasant dning experienced diminished when you need to keep your coat on to eat. Very accommodating waiter blamed it on the building owner - Grand Central Stn."

  • "From the hostess greeting to the service provided by Ana Maria and the exquisite food, my wife and I had a wonderful dining experience. We started with inventive cocktails: the Anejo Highball was the right mix of warmth, spice and flavor. The non-alcoholic grapefruit tonic was refreshing. We chose the Saturday Night Prix Fixe and Ana Maria said it would be fine to add some tapas. We enjoyed the croquetas and matrimonio, which are fairly typical tapas dishes. Both were fresh, flavorful and presented beautifully. The lightly grilled octopus over delicate potatoes was sublime and the entrees of roast chicken and hangar steak were very tasty. Great wine selection that was well thought out to match up with the food. Wonderful, wonderful place!"

  • "This restaurant was romantic. Not very crowded at all on a Sat night in January. It felt like we had the plsce to ourselves. Loved the octopus ala plancha on the appetizer menu. My date had the suckling pig. He said it was very good, but not the same as what he had in Spain. The roasted pimentos tapas was something we also knew from Madrid and these were pretty close. There is one or two hot ones in every dish and the rest are mild. Glad we got these because the entree had no vegetable at all. I had the braised short rib and it was tender and meaty, with a rich reduction. Also i had 2 glassses of the Garnacha which was excellent."

  • "The service was very good, and the staff were extremely accommodating. We had a reservation in the dining room (reservations are only taken for the dining room) but graciously were allowed to order from the tapas menu. Moreover, one of our group was very late so we did not order food until about an hour or two after our reservation (and that was after being seated an hour early). The staff was extremely gracious. We never felt rushed and had a really good time. The only disappointment was that a glass of port was served with extremely heavy sediment (it covered the bottom of the entire glass and there was a large piece stuck to the side of the glass). We were a bit disappointed that the bar would allow the drink to be served."

  • "Great location - but the service in the upstairs dining was very slow, drinks took ages. Tapas was good - the octopus was very good, but a lot of the rest was average. Not worth the sticker price unfortunately"

  • "I took a client/friend here for lunch on Friday and had a wonderful experience. She works just a few blocks away so she's been before and recommended it. The food is fantastic - above average for the Grand Central area. However, I want to call out the service. Our server April was fantastic. I rarely write a review let alone one about the service in particular but she deserves the call out. I take clients out Mon-Fri and while the experience is generally good very rarely do I feel the server is committed to the job itself. She is on top of things, great with recommendations and brings a passion to the job that you often do not see in Manhattan. Anyhow, thanks! Chris"

  • "I've been to La Fonda del Sol several times and seem to enjoy it more with each new occasion. The atmosphere is laid-back, but the servers are very attentive. I had the prix fixe meal: Mixed greens, salmon a la plancha, and flan. Everything was PERFECT. I'm looking forward to my next meal there."

  • "We had a wonderful meal at La Fonda del Sol, were seated in the main dining room but changed our minds and wanted tapas instead of ordering off the a la carte menu , the staff was very accomodatiing. Food was excellent, we have been to many of the great tapas places in NYC and this one is as good if not better in terms of their attention to detail, flavors, quality of preparation and textures . Presenttaion was excellent , quality of the ingredients top notch, great attention to every small detail was quite evident . The octopus was superb and very tender , dusted with smoked paprika . Croquettas crisply done , arbiquetas intensely flavored . Great wine list too. Just oustanding across the board ."

  • "It was my first time at La Fonda and know it will not be the last. Food was prepared perfectly and very tasty. The octopus appetizer and hangar steak entree were delicious. Service was attentive but not obtrusive. An added delight is the opportunity to meet the chef, Chris DeLuna. A wonderful dining experience."

  • "I like La Fonda del Sol - they have great tapas. This time, they gave us the full lunch menu; previously, the tapas were on a panel on the left, but not on this menu. We had to ask for the tapas menu. And I'm glad we did, because the tapas were, as usual, delicious. Fonda del Sol is not cheap, but the food is good and the portions decent."

  • "La Fonda Del Sol was a great dining experience for my friends and I. Our table was perfect in the upstairs dining room. Our server John took great care of us, he was very knowledgable and was very attentive. The variety of Tapas that we had were delicious. The managers came over to the table and reviewed what we were eating and brought wine to the table. Our overall experience was very enjoyable and we will be going back!"

  • "Food was excellent. Nice tapas to share and taste different ones. But the service was very slow. Our waiter was basically the waiter for the whole area of 10-20 tables and he was very busy."

  • "Service was great and the food was tasty, well prepared, and enjoyable, but the portions were very small. Nice decor. But too noisy, could barely hear my dining companions. Probably would not bother to go back."

  • "My wife and I had a wonderful night visiting with the great team at La Fonda del Sol. We were greeted warmly and treated well the whole evening. Raymond and CJ were exemplary and displayed what great customer service really means. Thanks to all for a great meal, great service and a great evening!!"

  • "Had a waitress who would leave the table for 45-60 minutes at a time. Given the menus and then didn't see her for nearly an hour. What is that about? Get the food and don't see her again for at least an hour. Bizarre service - pleasant environment but generally would not recommend due to poor service."

  • "If ambience is what you are looking for, this is a great spot very close to Grand Central Station. The indoor space is large, but it is nicely lit and decorated and you do not feel as though you are in a barn. The floors are tastefully carpeted, and there is plenty of room between you and the next table. This is a good choice if you want to have a private, intimate dinner. The appetizers were good but the main course could have been better. My serving of steak was very sparse and it did not come with a vegetable selection, which was disappointing. But these are areas that can easily be improved on. On the whole I found this a very inviting place to be, despite the hefty check."
