A word from La Fonda del Sol
La Fonda del Sol translates to “inn of the sun” and was first open from 1960 to the early 1970’s. The visionary “theme” restaurant was hailed as ahead of its time by many critics, with a menu that brought Latin and Spanish cuisine to New York for the first time in a fine dining setting.

Today, 47 years after its inception, La Fonda del Sol provides an unprecedented stage for modern Spanish cuisine in New York. Executive Chef Chris DeLuna reinterprets an expansive selection of dishes from across Spain, with a focus on tapas.

The split-level area consists of a bar room on the ground floor and the main dining room on the upper level, separated by an illuminated glass wall behind the bar. Reservations are accepted for the upstairs, main dining room only. If you have a PROMO CODE, please enter it in the special request box when making your reservation.

Diner Reviews
  • "We dined at La Fonda during Restaurant Week, with one of us opting for the RW menu and the other not. After we enjoyed our appetizers, 3 different people apologized for our entrees being delayed. Apparently, a mistake was made and one of our entrees was not ordered but we were alerted before we waited an unreasonable time and we were given empenadas to enjoy. It did take longer that usual, but everyone was so apologetic, we didn't mind. The food, though pricey, is great. I would go for the RW menu, so worth it. The manager also gave us a selection of desserts on the house. I would definitely recommend this restaurant!"

  • "We have eaten here in the past. The food is very good and truly representative of regional Spanish cuisine. Downstairs is a lively bar scene -upstairs the noise level is easily manageable. Our server ,Anna, is one of the best in the business. She is cordial and efficient. She dazzled us on previous visits and continued to impress on this visit. I rarely remember the wait staff in a restaurant but she is a stellar standout. I remembered our last dining experience the moment I saw her. Give her a raise-she made eating at La Fonda even more memorable!"

  • "Great place for a reasonably priced lunch or dinner. friendly reception, great wait staff. Never had the feeling of being rushed. We chose from the prix-fixe lunch menu; food was excellent. Noise level is low and we could carry on a conversation without having to raise our voices. This was my second time at Fonda del Sol, and like the first, I was not disappointed."

  • "Spanish food you don't find at a lot of other places. Upscale, lots of fresh seafood. Goood for lunch as the tables are not right on top of each other, so you can actually talk. Outdoor seating when the weather is right."

  • "The corn chowder was unreal, the tuna salad was OK, the dusting of paprika (?) and other herbs should have been slightly cooked with the tuna."

  • "I brought colleagues from work here for some tapas and wine, and some of them have dined all over the world, and they were in complete awe of the cuisine. The goat cheese fig bread, grilled octopus, and tuna tacos were just a few of the dishes that we had and they were unbelievable!!! Our service was excellent, the wine was impeccable. I can't say enough about how amazing this establishment is!!!"

  • "Had a pleasant lunch at Fonda del Sol with a business partner. Good basic wine list, excellent and reasonably (fixed) priced menu, alongside an interesting , limited a la carte menu. Quiet enough to carry on a conversation, no rushing by the staff; all in all a very pleasant experience."

  • "It is a great lunch place. They have formal and less formal seating plus a very cozy outside area. Best cappuccino in the neighborhood. Very good Spanish/Latin music and atmosphere. Lobste salad is my favotite dish there."

  • "It was a lovely Saturday Manhattan night and the place was deserted but what a beautiful space. Adequate service but slow since there was only 1 or 2 waiters in the house. Appetizers were so, so but we really came for the Paella. A good Paella should be caramelized on the bottom and this was not. Enough said except that for over $100 per person we won't be going back."

  • "Whenever we dine here we sit in the main dining room. Saturday nights the place is virtually empty. But the food and the margaritas are great. This time we had the gazpacho, bean soup, and some tapas--grilled shrimp, croquettes, empanadas. The fish taco was weird--not a tacp--actually a flat tortilla--and the fish was breaded and fried. Service was exemplary and it was easy to have a conversation. And those mango/jalapeno margaritas are fabulous."

  • "The food is excellent but the portions are small. It's pricey but worthy. Service was excellent. We had red sangria, the best I had!"

  • "Met a client here again. Was attended by the same server as a couple of months earlier, and she remembered. Sampled different wine and menu items, and was again quite pleased with all."

  • "The the food that was served was poorly prepared and grossly overpriced. I think something has changed in the kitchen since last time I was there several months ago. I doubt if I will return for I really don't like paying a lot of money for something which is at best tasteless and overrated."

  • "We were a party of 6 arriving in 3 separate groups. Two of the groups got lost (better to give the address as Vanderbuilt to people and not as Park Ave), and the staff was very accommodating in letting us order some wine and appetizers for the table. The restaurant wasn't crowded early on a rainy Saturday night, so it was quiet overall. When everyone finally arrived, the staff was careful in when they approached/interrupted conversation, and they were attentive about refilling water and wine glasses. It was also nice to have someone who spoke Spanish for the people at the table who were non-English speakers. Everyone loved their food and wine. Get the cinnamon fritters for dessert!"

  • "I've been to La Fonda Del Sol many times. As in the past, we ordered Paella but this time we were disappointed. It was dry and the rice was stuck to the bottom. It came out in an open skillet as opposed to a covered pot so that might be the reason. Another thought is that the drinks are quite small for the price. I'll give the restaurant another try especially because of the location."

  • "Overpriced, small portions that were undercooked.....even after explaining to the waiter to cook the food through and through it was like eating rubber.....fish was bad.....will not return to this establishment."

  • "I was meeting a friend for lunch and picked La Fonda Del Sol as it was conveniently located. The food was excellent and so too was the service. Could not have picked a better spot. I've also walked past in the evenings and looks like a great spot for post work cocktails. "

  • "I have never dined in the formal dining room, but the street level tapas and bar areas are attractive, relatively calm - at lunch time - and happy. Eating at the bar is pleasant. The tapas menu offerings are excellent, as there is something for everyone and each dish can be shared. The Spanish wines are excellent and the knowledgeable staff can assist you to select the type of wine that pleases you. Sitting by the window looking out onto Vanderbilt Avenue is a wonderful New York experience, and Fonda's location inside the complex that house Grand Central Station is unbeatable. My favorite post-prandial past time is descending into the station and visiting the food hall - particularly Murray's Cheese Shop."

  • "Every time I have gone to La Fonda Del Sol, I have enjoyed a wonderful meal. The staff is very friendly and attentive, and the food is delicious. I ordered from the prix fixe menu and was able to substitute for the black bean soup with the soup of the day, a gazpacho garnished with a teaspoon of chopped lobster. For the entrée, I selected Atlantic salmon cooked to medium rare, and for dessert, an orange flan. Excellent and excellent! This probably was my last visit to La Fonda Del Sol, as I will be moving out of the area shortly. I will carry fond memories of this restaurant and the many wonderful meals I enjoyed there with me. "

  • "Not typical for a Spanish tapas bar/ restaurant, Fonda serves modern takes on the classics. The portions are small, but the flavors are bold. Not as atmospheric as I would like, but comfortable nonetheless."

  • "Simply the best paella in NY. The chorizo, sweetest I have ever eater, and the rice are authentic and cooked to perfection. If you like Spanish food, this is your place. Come for dinner and sit in the back. While I don't usually focus on staff, our server was perfect. Attentive without being intrusive."

  • "I would really like to give this restaurant almost a 4, like 3.9. It really is quite good and for this area of town around Grand Central it's a standout with reasonable prices, a lovely dining room and a reasonable noise level. Great place for large groups to share tapas. Wait staff is extremely nice and helpful. I definitely would recommend and go again."

  • "i visited this restaurant recently with friends on a saturday at 6:30pm recently for an early dinner before an event. it took us close to 30 minutes to get waters and another 15 to get menus. the food was delicious so it was disappointing to have such terrible service. and, the slow service would make sense if we were in the caribbean or if the restaurant was packed full and our waiter was overwhelmed. but we were one of two tables when we were first sat and one of three tables seated by the time we had our dinner. the food was amazing though!"
