A word from La Fonda del Sol
La Fonda del Sol translates to “inn of the sun” and was first open from 1960 to the early 1970’s. The visionary “theme” restaurant was hailed as ahead of its time by many critics, with a menu that brought Latin and Spanish cuisine to New York for the first time in a fine dining setting.

Today, 47 years after its inception, La Fonda del Sol provides an unprecedented stage for modern Spanish cuisine in New York. Executive Chef Chris DeLuna reinterprets an expansive selection of dishes from across Spain, with a focus on tapas.

The split-level area consists of a bar room on the ground floor and the main dining room on the upper level, separated by an illuminated glass wall behind the bar. Reservations are accepted for the upstairs, main dining room only. If you have a PROMO CODE, please enter it in the special request box when making your reservation.

  • "I brought colleagues from work here for some tapas and wine, and some of them have dined all over the world, and they were in complete awe of the cuisine. The goat cheese fig bread, grilled octopus, and tuna tacos were just a few of the dishes that we had and they were unbelievable!!! Our service was excellent, the wine was impeccable. I can't say enough about how amazing this establishment is!!!"

  • "Whenever we dine here we sit in the main dining room. Saturday nights the place is virtually empty. But the food and the margaritas are great. This time we had the gazpacho, bean soup, and some tapas--grilled shrimp, croquettes, empanadas. The fish taco was weird--not a tacp--actually a flat tortilla--and the fish was breaded and fried. Service was exemplary and it was easy to have a conversation. And those mango/jalapeno margaritas are fabulous."

Appetizers were so, so but we really came for the Paella. A good Paella should be caramelized on the bottom and this was not. Enough said except that for over $100 per person we won't be going back."

  • "We were a party of 6 arriving in 3 separate groups. Two of the groups got lost (better to give the address as Vanderbuilt to people and not as Park Ave), and the staff was very accommodating in letting us order some wine and appetizers for the table. The restaurant wasn't crowded early on a rainy Saturday night, so it was quiet overall. When everyone finally arrived, the staff was careful in when they approached/interrupted conversation, and they were attentive about refilling water and wine glasses. It was also nice to have someone who spoke Spanish for the people at the table who were non-English speakers. Everyone loved their food and wine. Get the cinnamon fritters for dessert!"

  • "I've been to La Fonda Del Sol many times. As in the past, we ordered Paella but this time we were disappointed. It was dry and the rice was stuck to the bottom. It came out in an open skillet as opposed to a covered pot so that might be the reason. Another thought is that the drinks are quite small for the price. I'll give the restaurant another try especially because of the location."

  • "I have never dined in the formal dining room, but the street level tapas and bar areas are attractive, relatively calm - at lunch time - and happy. Eating at the bar is pleasant. The tapas menu offerings are excellent, as there is something for everyone and each dish can be shared. The Spanish wines are excellent and the knowledgeable staff can assist you to select the type of wine that pleases you. Sitting by the window looking out onto Vanderbilt Avenue is a wonderful New York experience, and Fonda's location inside the complex that house Grand Central Station is unbeatable. My favorite post-prandial past time is descending into the station and visiting the food hall - particularly Murray's Cheese Shop."

  • "Every time I have gone to La Fonda Del Sol, I have enjoyed a wonderful meal. The staff is very friendly and attentive, and the food is delicious. I ordered from the prix fixe menu and was able to substitute for the black bean soup with the soup of the day, a gazpacho garnished with a teaspoon of chopped lobster. For the entrée, I selected Atlantic salmon cooked to medium rare, and for dessert, an orange flan. Excellent and excellent! This probably was my last visit to La Fonda Del Sol, as I will be moving out of the area shortly. I will carry fond memories of this restaurant and the many wonderful meals I enjoyed there with me. "

  • "i visited this restaurant recently with friends on a saturday at 6:30pm recently for an early dinner before an event. it took us close to 30 minutes to get waters and another 15 to get menus. the food was delicious so it was disappointing to have such terrible service. and, the slow service would make sense if we were in the caribbean or if the restaurant was packed full and our waiter was overwhelmed. but we were one of two tables when we were first sat and one of three tables seated by the time we had our dinner. the food was amazing though!"

We started with inventive cocktails: the Anejo Highball was the right mix of warmth, spice and flavor. The non-alcoholic grapefruit tonic was refreshing. We chose the Saturday Night Prix Fixe and Ana Maria said it would be fine to add some tapas. We enjoyed the croquetas and matrimonio, which are fairly typical tapas dishes. Both were fresh, flavorful and presented beautifully. The lightly grilled octopus over delicate potatoes was sublime and the entrees of roast chicken and hangar steak were very tasty. Great wine selection that was well thought out to match up with the food. Wonderful, wonderful place!"

  • "This restaurant was romantic. Not very crowded at all on a Sat night in January. It felt like we had the plsce to ourselves. Loved the octopus ala plancha on the appetizer menu. My date had the suckling pig. He said it was very good, but not the same as what he had in Spain. The roasted pimentos tapas was something we also knew from Madrid and these were pretty close. There is one or two hot ones in every dish and the rest are mild. Glad we got these because the entree had no vegetable at all. I had the braised short rib and it was tender and meaty, with a rich reduction. Also i had 2 glassses of the Garnacha which was excellent."

We had a reservation in the dining room (reservations are only taken for the dining room) but graciously were allowed to order from the tapas menu. Moreover, one of our group was very late so we did not order food until about an hour or two after our reservation (and that was after being seated an hour early). The staff was extremely gracious. We never felt rushed and had a really good time. The only disappointment was that a glass of port was served with extremely heavy sediment (it covered the bottom of the entire glass and there was a large piece stuck to the side of the glass). We were a bit disappointed that the bar would allow the drink to be served."
