A word from La Folie
La Folie is a French restaurant located in Russian Hill of San Francisco. Chef Roland Passot, with his wife Jamie opened La Folie in March of 1988. He combines the freshest ingredients in exotic combinations. Each plate leaves the kitchen resembling art-a canvas of color and design that tastes even better than it looks. La Folie continues to be rated as one of the top restaurants, receiving a star from the Michelin Guide, 4 stars from the San Francisco Chronicle and 4 stars from San Francisco Magazine. In celebration of 21 years, The Passots have expanded their bar into a lounge located next door, perfect for before or after dinner drinks.

Diner Reviews
  • "I came here for my bday and really enjoyed my meal. We got 5 complimentary samples from the chef, which was wonderful. My mother got the rabbit which I thought was outstanding. My least favorite dish was the artichoke salad, which was slightly bitter. I also really enjoyed the baked Alaska. "

  • "We truly had the most amazing dinner at La Folie! The food had so many different layers of flavors and was beautifully presented. "

  • "everyone should eat here at least once in their life!"

  • "First time dining at La Folie - a wonderful dining experience. Six of us were celebrating 2 friends birthdays. The service was flawless as each course was brought out to us. Each course was so delicious. The quality and taste of the food was delicious."

  • "An anniversary dinner while visiting San Francisco from Hamilton Ontario. Pricey? Yes. Pretentious? Worth it? A definite yes. From entry to exit we were well looked after. Service was always there and friendly but left you alone. Wine list was very good and help was there if you wanted it. Menu itself was varied enough for most appetites. Presentation was spectacular. The three amusebouchees were a great surprise too (egg yolk poached in lentil soup?!) all four courses were sumptuous. My rabbit was so tender and the goat cheese tatin very tasty. Really could not have asked for a better overall experience. Rarely would I say what I spent at a fine dining restaurant was worth it. I would for LaFolie."

  • "Not only is this really just not worth it--the actual taste of the food was average at best-- but price of the meal would support an family in some developing country for a year. Sorry."

  • "FRom the moment we sat down until I last tasty bite, every part of this meal was perfect. The service was top notch. The food was absolutely amazing and every bite was well thought out. The sommelier picked a perfect wine for us to share. My dining companion and I really love this restaurant and look forward to our return."

  • "Roland Passot has been delighting our taste buds and eyes for over 20 years! Superb dinner. Mandy, our server, was awesome and oh so poised. Once again, it's a treat to spend the evening there. A must dine!"

  • "La Folie is one of, if not the best, restaurant experiences a person can have in this beautiful city. I'll have to admit I have not been to Saison or Benu yet. From the warm greeting when you enter, to the last bite of the meal, you will be treated to perfection. The service is extremely professional and yet not intimating. Even if a course may seem a little out of your comfort zone give it a try. Nothing served at this exceptional restaurant will be a disappointment. Most diners can't afford an evening like this every week, but anyone who enjoys a memorable dining experience should dine here occasionally."

  • "One of the best meals I have ever had. Not to be missed if you are in the San Fran area. Portions are good."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "Thoroughly disappointed by this establishment. They bait you into getting other items like making you smell an item and for 50 dollars you can have it. How cheap. The food is marginal, at best. Pass. I wasted my time and money."

  • "Very good menu with caviar and black truffles. Good for Kids too. Servers are all very friendly and attentive. My 6 year old niece enjoyed her food from appetizer to desserts!"

  • "La Folie is always at the top of their game. Our recent experience was no exception. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, everything was wonderful. Our server was professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Our food was beyond compare and the amuse buche (there were 3) were fabulous. A relaxed, engaging dinner. PERFECT!"

  • "We enjoyed the food but ended up feeling to full after taking the four course prix fixe. I would probably rate it higher if I had three courses. The fish was very good, and duck main course was nice but on the heavy side."

  • "Magical, romantic, relaxing, decadent...all of these words and more can be used to describe my meal at La Folie. Not that I expected less, given its reputation. What I did not expect, however, was VALUE at this price point. Not only was every dish delicious, the portions were generous enough for even a hearty appetite. We ate and ate and ate, and still had enough leftovers for a really delicious brunch the next day. This restaurant goes above and beyond even San Francisco's high standards, and will be a favorite repeat destination for us. Standout dishes included: the trout roe trio, pork and sweetbread terrine, and caviar (supplemental fee charged)."

  • "La Folie met all my expectations, the food and service were outstanding. French food at its best, portions are moderate so four courses are ok. The lobster dishes and the goat cheese tatin were exceptional!"

  • "La Folie is extraordinary in the excellence of its food, flawless service, and beauty of the space. The food was all impeccably prepared and plated. The service was attentive but not pretentious or overly formal. A truly memorable experience."

  • "An impressive find, not what it appears from the outside. Ask to be seated in the back dining room and be swept away to a European castle. It was a special occasion - so we went with the Chef's tasting menu. The frog's legs were to die for (first time for me), the lobster course was a tad rubbery but the dish as a whole was delicious. The filet and accompaniments were an explosion of flavors, followed by a lovely cheese course and individual baked Alaskas containing home-made huckleberry ice cream, yum! Last but not least, the service was impeccable. Back to the castle theme, we felt like royalty. We are looking forward to our next visit."

  • "After living the Bay area for over 10 years we finally ate at La Folie and it was all we had heard and read about it. Now we have to figure out how we can go back soon!"

  • "Quite possibly the best dining experience I've had in a long time. Food was incredible. Service was fantastic. Appreciated the many, many amuse buche. Very much appreciated the chef coming out to speak with us. Jardiniere, Boulevard, Fleur De Lys, Gary Danko, Chaya,... all great restaurants... but, I always felt a little disappointed with some aspect at each... La Folie, on the other hand,... 5 stars across the board. Just a great, great evening. Will definitely be returning."

  • "Great welcoming atmosphere ! My wife and I had the tasting menu and unlike many other restaurants we were able to make two minor substitutions for dished with ingeredients we didn't care for . We are glad we could as the food was outstanding . The suggested wine pairings were excellent and fairly priced . Little compliments of the chef in addition to the amuse bouche were nice added touches . Warm fresh rolls were delicious . All in a wonderful experience ."

  • "It was out second time there, first time it was not so full as this time and the Chef gave us a little more attention. This time was very busy but they were able as before to present amazing food. Great service, creative and delicious food choices. Our server was not so attentive but helped us with the wine and the choices, explaining the specials. Everything was great. this is really a not to miss place in town for a good time only or romantic moments, family celebrations, and even important business meals. Food are perfect from the choices from cooking to the presentation it seems every tiny detail pass over the Chef's attention before go the table. Will keep returning and hope next time it was not so packed so service be more attentive."

  • "I eat here every year on an anniversary, they never disappoint me. Service is always impeccable and the food delicious. The Chef is very innovative, I've always had the chance to try something new. I have never eaten anything here that didn't wow me. I usually go with the 5 course menu where I get to choose what I eat, for a little extra you can order from the chefs seasonal tasting menu as well. Definitely love this place and will continue to come here for a very long time."

  • "Really really superb overall. Some of the dishes had a lovely combination of flavors, others were prepared exquisitely, others had interesting textures. To be fair not all the dishes had all of those qualities but they we would have at least two. Also the portions were really generous. We usually do five courses in this kind of a restaurant and found four courses to be more than enough. The staff were all very professional and nice, without being upscale restaurant snobby. The decor was warm and elegant, with comfortable seating. The price point is on par for this type of foodie, special event, fine french dinning establishment. I asked if they get folks who dine alone and the hostess said they do."

  • "We had a wonderful meal here on a visit to San Francisco last month. I loved the ability to mix and match the dishes on the menu and meant that we got to try everything we wanted. The various amuse bouche were lovely and a nice touch The staff were fantastic - friendly, helpful and knowledgeable without being intrusive. Everyone (including the kitchen) were really accommodating of my husbands nut allergy and modified dishes where necessary, including the amuse bouche and little extras. We even got to have a nice chat with the chef after our meal which was a nice touch."

  • "Every time I eat at La Folie I'm reminded of how special it is. Chef Passot's cuisine is top-notch, and the ambience is lovely and perfect for a special or romantic dinner. Ben, our server, was also excellent. I can't praise La Folie enough."

  • "At La Folie we were greeted by the kindest hostess who promptly sat us at our table. From that point on we were graciously taken care of by a tremendous staff, including the chef who came to our table twice (once to greet us and a second time to share his excitement for his tasty creations). This is a place for special occasions- a little costly but definitely worth every penny."

  • "We dragged our recuperating daughter to this cool French restaurant. She really enjoyed the dinner sipping Tettangier sparkling wine and Mount Eden Piont Noir. That was a definitely memorable top notch cuisine experience in SFO. We look forward to paying another visit here in the near future."

  • "This is my second time trying this cuisine establishment along with my wife. The atmoshere was cool and staff persons were accomodating and brisk as same as before. The 3 course menu was absolutely satisfactory to our expectation. This is why we made another reservation for our recuperating daughter next night."

  • "We went for our 4th anniversary. Had the Chef's winter tasting menu with win pairings. Everything was simply amazing, from the service to the food to the ambience to the extra "Happy Anniversary" message iced onto the chocolate bark as part of the dessert. The price is preventative for us making this a frequent occurrence (household on a budget in SF), but what're nice things if they don't cost more to enjoy them?"

  • "What an unexpected gem. We were seated in the back room which was very quiet and quite elegant. My husband and I had the tasting menu and eveything on it was superb! We will look forward to returning on a future trip back to San Fran"

  • "Our dinner was a birthday celebration for our son and was just wonderful evening. We were early for our reservation but were seated right away and made comfortable by our extremely professional wait person. She was excellent in every way; her knowledge of the food as well as the proper wine pairing was impressive. The quality of the dishes and the presentation was also great. Overall the restaurant met all expectations, even exceeding some. We would highly recommend La Folie to others."

  • "Wow... this is my second time at La Folie. It is one of San Francisco's five best, and that is saying something. The hostess was very conscientious, and when she seated a couple ahead of us, even though we were there first, she walked all the way over to make sure we knew that the couple had called in for an earlier reservation, and said they'd be late. I like that. And the food... wow! We had: dungeness crab salad (perfect crab joy); asparagus and lobster soup; lobster risotto with Perigord truffles (they gave us a generous amount of truffle shavings); butter poached lobster and ravioli (really, I think it was a pansotti, but either way it's great); squab and quail roti, wrapped in potato strings. Choc fondant dessert. All perfect!"
