A word from La Folie
La Folie is a French restaurant located in Russian Hill of San Francisco. Chef Roland Passot, with his wife Jamie opened La Folie in March of 1988. He combines the freshest ingredients in exotic combinations. Each plate leaves the kitchen resembling art-a canvas of color and design that tastes even better than it looks. La Folie continues to be rated as one of the top restaurants, receiving a star from the Michelin Guide, 4 stars from the San Francisco Chronicle and 4 stars from San Francisco Magazine. In celebration of 21 years, The Passots have expanded their bar into a lounge located next door, perfect for before or after dinner drinks.

  • "We finally entered the exquisite world of Roland Passot's La Folie last night. I had hesitated to visit a fine dining French restaurant here after returning from a 3 year sojourn in Lyon over a decade ago. I had the good fortune to partake of almost 25 European Michelin starred meals during my stay in France and I felt it was unlikely an establishment doing business here would be able to sustain and offer the same level of cooking, service and ambience that is found routinely in France. The cultural and economic differences seemed to me to preclude a master chef from offering a true French dining experience here. La Folie surpassed all expectations. Best recommendations? Duck egg starter, squab/ quail roti, Sunset chocolate decadence."

  • "After researching on Trip adviser for a special place for dinner on our last night of our short stay in San Francisco, I settled on La Folie. It proved to be an outstanding choice. Service was warm / welcoming from the moment we arrived and yet not intrusive or over bearing. The food was simply superb in every respet. The Tasting menu was very tempting but in the end my wife and I chose 4 courses each. It was pleasing to see only a couple of the options necessatated an addtional charge. Caviar and truffles. My wife opted for the truffle extra with her Lobster risotto but at 20 dollars this was very reasonably priced and my wife assured me it was well worth it. The meal was accompanied by two refreshing and ineresting amuse bouche. Lovely."

This restaurant is not inexpensive, but my wife, grown son and I felt it was well worth the money. The menu is creative and the dishes are excellently prepared with a beautiful presentation. We enjoyed our meal here and will return in the not too distant future."

  • "I am going to save everyone time--if you have a special occasion coming up or just want to treat that special someone out to a premier dining experience, book your reservation to La Folie now. I wish I had more time to go into detail, but allow me to give a quick summary: service was impeccable, the courses were one revelation after another, and the ambiance struck an ideal balance between upscale and accessible. Chef Passot even came out at the end of our meal to ensure that everything was perfect. Delightful man! I am definitely coming back again."

  • "I myself did just the three course dinner while my girlfriend did a la carte. Not only timed perfectly but filled with chefs tastings thorought the meal. Then after all this elegance the chef came out to say hello. Maybe we ordered his favorite dishes who knows but is rarely seen this day in age. If we only lived in SF we would go at least once every couple months and cut out other lesser choices to do so."

  • "My wife and I were given vouchers for La Folie as a wedding present so we decided to cash them in last Saturday. It was easy to get a booking, they do 2 sittings each night, we went for the 6:30pm sitting which I initially thought was a little early but the whole meal took a relaxed 3 hours so it was perfect timing. Our waiter as fabulous, he explained the menu, gave recommendations and made sure our specific needs were catered for. The sommelier was also great (the chefs brother I believe) he guided us through the list and helped us settle on a lovely bottle of wine. The food was delicious! We had four courses and there were quite a few extras tasters which were a nice bonus. An all round great evening."

  • "There should be more than 5 stars available for this restaurant for the various categories. Every course was impeccably presented, crafted with care, and cooked (or not) to perfection. The roti of quail and squab was fantastic; beautiful and delicious. Service was perfect and wine help was quite knowledgeable. The portions are not overwhelming, but in no way small; you just want to finish them, you want that one last bite of that particular flavor. It is clearly one of the best restaurants in the U.S. and it does remind my wife and I of some very fine restaurants in France, where we visit every 3-4 years."

  • "I recently dined here because I was planning a celebration dinner for 2 of my closest friends. I stumbled upon this highly recommended French restaurant and was excited to try it. When I walked in I found the place to be cozy and modernly decorated. We were promptly escorted to our seats and given the wine list. They have a quite a nice list of wines. We then proceed to check out the dinner menu where every option sounded delicious. The waitress was very helpful in explaining the dishes offered. You are only allowed to choose one meat/poultry dish. The food, service and ambience was fantastic! The one small drawback was there was one bathroom, so if you needed to go there may be a line. I will definitely come back again."

We were told :"some guests told us that the room is too hot: they need some fresh air". Such a situation is not acceptable. The food was delicious as usual; everything else was average to mediocre."

  • "Did we have dinner at the same place as other people that gave La Folie 5 stars? Service was good at the start. But the we saw less of the server at dinner progressed. After two Amuse Bouche courses, our appetizers arrived. The summer corn soup and beet salad were outstanding. Neither the snail or goat cheese tatin blew us out of the water. Main courses consisted of the butter lobster and Rôti of Quail and Squab, The lobster was ok. It took a few bites to figure out that there was too much truffle in the sauce. The blueberry baked Alaska which was nice....just nice. My husband had “The Sunset” Bittersweet Chocolate Fondant. Dry and burnt - this presentation never should have left the kitchen. A replacement was offered but we declined."

  • "we came for my husbands 50th and everything was excellent. crab and peach salad, crisp and delicious, burrata creamy and great texture, passo roe was amazing. a must try! poached lobster, mushroom and lobster risotto and quail and duck fabulous. everything was cooked to perfection, presentation was wonderful. desserts were spot on as well. not too sweet!! none of us left stuffed! wines were great. there was some wait for our dessert and they brought us a selection of sorbets and dessert wine on the house. great service and took care of us very very well. the only thing we would change is the bread. not as flaky as we would have liked and it was the only thing that is pretty dense. So 50 stars, well done and we will be back!! BRAVO!!!!"

  • "From the moment we walked in the door until we left, we were treated to a fabulous dining experience. We ordered the four course meal, but could have ordered the three course and been satisfied. Each plate was like a work of art and a taste sensation in every bite. The service was friendly, but not overbearing. All of the employees were knowledgeable regarding what they were serving and gave us tips as how to best enjoy each course. We are looking forward to returning soon."

  • "We had visited La Folie before, and I had initially dined there solo. The solo visit was very good, but from the first time that I was able to bring my wife, things have been excellent - I think that it is her favorite restaurant in San Francisco, and with good reason. The dining area is smallish, but smart, and the tables are well-spaced. The interior is elegant, but without any hint of stuffiness. Though the surfaces are rather hard, the noise level has always been low. As per our past experiences, the service, the wines and the food have all been perfect. Though basically a French restaurant, I had one of the best Beef Ribeyes of my life."

My husband got the Chef's tasting menu and he loved that too. It's pricey but definitely worth the price for a special occasion. Highly recommended. "

  • "We booked the restaurant for 5 of us back 3-4 weeks ago. Overall, the food is fantastic. I loved the chef's greetings. Picked frog leg Ragout from the tasting menu, then pig feet, lobster salad. then again had the lobster risotto and a coconut topioca dessert. I think the frog leg is my favorite. My husband's escargot is fantastic too. I had wished the serving size can be even a bit smaller esp for the pig feet dish. ;) The chef came to greet all the tables at the end which is very lovely!"

  • "Several interesting amuse bouches prior to my prix fixe 3 courses. The baby artichokes barigoule were tender and so delicious. Followed by a scrumptious terrine of pigs feet, lobster, and sweetbreads set on a bed of lentil salad. I appreciated a written menu for the cheese course; each cheese was listed with origin and type of milk, etc.; then each was described as to flavor, texture. The wine list by the glass and half bottle was not impressive, but we managed to find a Chante Cigale CdP. Great service. "

  • "Superb meal, as is the service. Attentive, never intrusive. A visit and chat with Roland Passot made for a memorable evening with the two women I am most enamored with. My wife & daughter. Not one dish was off, from light and fresh to savory full flavors, you get it all. Don't fret too much about what to order, there are no clunkers in this fine establishment. The two items I do remember vividly are the oyster that came the "Roe Passot" and the perfectly cooked lamb. "
