A word from La Folie
La Folie is a French restaurant located in Russian Hill of San Francisco. Chef Roland Passot, with his wife Jamie opened La Folie in March of 1988. He combines the freshest ingredients in exotic combinations. Each plate leaves the kitchen resembling art-a canvas of color and design that tastes even better than it looks. La Folie continues to be rated as one of the top restaurants, receiving a star from the Michelin Guide, 4 stars from the San Francisco Chronicle and 4 stars from San Francisco Magazine. In celebration of 21 years, The Passots have expanded their bar into a lounge located next door, perfect for before or after dinner drinks.

  • "An anniversary dinner while visiting San Francisco from Hamilton Ontario. Pricey? Yes. Pretentious? Worth it? A definite yes. From entry to exit we were well looked after. Service was always there and friendly but left you alone. Wine list was very good and help was there if you wanted it. Menu itself was varied enough for most appetites. Presentation was spectacular. The three amusebouchees were a great surprise too (egg yolk poached in lentil soup?!) all four courses were sumptuous. My rabbit was so tender and the goat cheese tatin very tasty. Really could not have asked for a better overall experience. Rarely would I say what I spent at a fine dining restaurant was worth it. I would for LaFolie."

From the warm greeting when you enter, to the last bite of the meal, you will be treated to perfection. The service is extremely professional and yet not intimating. Even if a course may seem a little out of your comfort zone give it a try. Nothing served at this exceptional restaurant will be a disappointment. Most diners can't afford an evening like this every week, but anyone who enjoys a memorable dining experience should dine here occasionally."

What I did not expect, however, was VALUE at this price point. Not only was every dish delicious, the portions were generous enough for even a hearty appetite. We ate and ate and ate, and still had enough leftovers for a really delicious brunch the next day. This restaurant goes above and beyond even San Francisco's high standards, and will be a favorite repeat destination for us. Standout dishes included: the trout roe trio, pork and sweetbread terrine, and caviar (supplemental fee charged)."

  • "An impressive find, not what it appears from the outside. Ask to be seated in the back dining room and be swept away to a European castle. It was a special occasion - so we went with the Chef's tasting menu. The frog's legs were to die for (first time for me), the lobster course was a tad rubbery but the dish as a whole was delicious. The filet and accompaniments were an explosion of flavors, followed by a lovely cheese course and individual baked Alaskas containing home-made huckleberry ice cream, yum! Last but not least, the service was impeccable. Back to the castle theme, we felt like royalty. We are looking forward to our next visit."

We are glad we could as the food was outstanding . The suggested wine pairings were excellent and fairly priced . Little compliments of the chef in addition to the amuse bouche were nice added touches . Warm fresh rolls were delicious . All in a wonderful experience ."

This time was very busy but they were able as before to present amazing food. Great service, creative and delicious food choices. Our server was not so attentive but helped us with the wine and the choices, explaining the specials. Everything was great. this is really a not to miss place in town for a good time only or romantic moments, family celebrations, and even important business meals. Food are perfect from the choices from cooking to the presentation it seems every tiny detail pass over the Chef's attention before go the table. The Chef is very innovative, I've always had the chance to try something new. I have never eaten anything here that didn't wow me. I usually go with the 5 course menu where I get to choose what I eat, for a little extra you can order from the chefs seasonal tasting menu as well. Definitely love this place and will continue to come here for a very long time."

  • "Really really superb overall. Some of the dishes had a lovely combination of flavors, others were prepared exquisitely, others had interesting textures. To be fair not all the dishes had all of those qualities but they we would have at least two. Also the portions were really generous. We usually do five courses in this kind of a restaurant and found four courses to be more than enough. The staff were all very professional and nice, without being upscale restaurant snobby. The decor was warm and elegant, with comfortable seating. The price point is on par for this type of foodie, special event, fine french dinning establishment. I asked if they get folks who dine alone and the hostess said they do."

The various amuse bouche were lovely and a nice touch The staff were fantastic - friendly, helpful and knowledgeable without being intrusive. Everyone (including the kitchen) were really accommodating of my husbands nut allergy and modified dishes where necessary, including the amuse bouche and little extras. Everything was simply amazing, from the service to the food to the ambience to the extra "Happy Anniversary" message iced onto the chocolate bark as part of the dessert. We were early for our reservation but were seated right away and made comfortable by our extremely professional wait person. She was excellent in every way; her knowledge of the food as well as the proper wine pairing was impressive. The quality of the dishes and the presentation was also great. Overall the restaurant met all expectations, even exceeding some. We would highly recommend La Folie to others."

  • "Wow... this is my second time at La Folie. It is one of San Francisco's five best, and that is saying something. The hostess was very conscientious, and when she seated a couple ahead of us, even though we were there first, she walked all the way over to make sure we knew that the couple had called in for an earlier reservation, and said they'd be late. I like that. And the food... wow! We had: dungeness crab salad (perfect crab joy); asparagus and lobster soup; lobster risotto with Perigord truffles (they gave us a generous amount of truffle shavings); butter poached lobster and ravioli (really, I think it was a pansotti, but either way it's great); squab and quail roti, wrapped in potato strings. Choc fondant dessert. All perfect!"

  • "I dined at many of the worlds best restaurants and it was time to try La Folie.I was prepared to be transported on a magical tour but i was left deflated. While the food was good it was not great, some of the seasonings were heavy handed, too many things on the plates, some reductions reduced to much to where my lips smacked from the amount of gelatin (naturally found) in the duck and the pork reductions. Lovely little amuse bouches appeared and service was prompt and efficient but not Ninja like at a competitors. My husband doesn't like truffles and it was in a sauce and asked for it to be on the side, the waitress make it happen but failed to inform us that truffles where in the dish as well, faux part on the side of the server."
