Diner Reviews
  • "My husband and I visited LDV during restaurant week and will definitely be back. The food was delicious -- he had veal and I had the shrimp and scallop ravioli. Both were very good. We had the lobster claw and cranberry, spinach salad for starters and finished the meal with homemade bumpy cake (the favorite, by far) and a cannoli. The bumpy cake is a must, incredible! The server was extremely helpful and courteous and Valet parking was nice considering the surrounding area. Seating is snug - other guests are very close so it's not ideal for intimate conversations. The musician was also amazing, unique voice and very entertaining. Overall, wonderful experience and we are looking forward to going back soon!"

  • "We will not go back here. We had an awful experience with 1st waiting and waiting for the waiter to come to our table multiple times. He was distracted and odd. We were served a different bottle of wine then what we sampled before purchasing. We were told it was a better wine and replacement for the wine we tried after be lied to. The manager argued with us and was not polite through the whole experience. He told me the wine came in today "cases". If you are changing your wine up and replacing it, do not serve the old wine as a taste then bring a totally different bottle to the table to serve. WILL NOT go back due to whole experiene"

  • "We always have a terrific dining experience at La Dolce Vita. It's never let us down. Great food, service and ambience. It works for special occassions or an ordinary date night. This time we were there for Restaurant Week - but, all of the Restaurant Week menu selections came from their regular menu. Both appetizerts (shell fish salad and sauteed portobella) were outstanding. My wife's seafood lasagna and my sea bass were very well prepared and presented. The accompaniments to my fish (smashed potato and asparagus) were especially good. The house made Bumpy Cake and a Cannolli finished a perfect meal."

  • "Finding LDV for the first time works best with a lookout. It actually is easier at night as the blue LDV sign is easier to see. Swing around back and it looks like you would expect the front of the restaurant to look like. The only annoying part of the evening, a wobbly table. We figured out how to work with it and the waiter made a small attempt to fix but never really got it right. The food was excellent and was what was expected and presented well. Served a little quick though we were not rushed They have a fantastic looking bar - getting there early for a drink at the bar would be worth the trip. I'll definitely return when the weather is nicer as the patio dining area, which was in my view all night, looks great."

  • "I brought a group for lunch. I was pleasantly surprised the food was excellent and service superior. The staff was attentive to every need and knowledgeable about every aspect of our meals. I will definitely return. Authentic rustic italian . "

  • "We've only been to LDV 3 times and each time we felt like it was the first time. Each time was different, first time in the summer on the gorgeous hidden patio, another for my mom's birthday indoors when it was 10 deg outside, and then just the other night. Always amazing food, good service and great ambiance. Hidden gem!"

  • "If you are looking for a spot no one would suspect in Detroit, LDV is the place. Somewhat of a safe-house from an bygone era. Nestled in the Palmer Park North Woodward corridor sits the charming restaurant with a wonderful summertime courtyard and ambiance that can charm the best of them. The ceasar, made table side is excellent. The Italian fare matches the ambiance. Service is attentive but not intrusive from the valet to the bus person. It is a must for the Detroit visitor."

  • "I recently moved to downtown Detroit. Although I am a native Detroiter and have passed this way many times, this the first opportunity I've had to dine at La Dolce Vita. I'm sorry that I waited so long! The Portobello Mushroom appetizer was a great compliment to my Short Rib and Polenta Entree'. I truly enjoyed the friendly wait staff and the European atmosphere. I will definitely make a return visit!"

  • "Overall it was a good night out but the food was just ok. The gnocchi was over-cooked and the lasagna was greasy and looked like a blob. Oh, also they were out of meatballs. How is a itilian reasturant out if meatballs? Cant they just make some more? The waiter and service staff were excellent and very attentive. I would like to go back in the summer to see what the patio looks like in full bloom. "

  • "Despite the neighborhood and the unassuming curb appeal, this is a gem of a restaurant. The food was superb, from the starters to the dessert. Our server was accommodating but unobtrusive, offering helpful information about the dishes we were considering. We will be back to test out the patio, since it snowed the day we ate here."

  • "We have dined at ldV many times in the past, but wanted to visit for Restaurant Week. We were slightly disappointed at the wait to be seated, since we had reservations via OpenTable, but time passed quickly with drinks at the bar & live music. Although we ended up ordering from the regular menu (not Restaurant Week menu), every bite brought rave reviews from all 6 diners in our group. Fave apps: Chevre Eggplant, Caprese...savor the creamiest, freshest cheeses Interestingly tasty: Consomme with Creamy Ricotta & Goat Cheese Balls Salad note: Caesar, tableside for 2, good but would have liked a more robust garlic flavor Entree: Filetto Di Manzo, filets + marsala cream sauce = perfection! Tempting dessert tray but Tiramisu never disappoints"

  • "I went to La Dolce Vita to sample the restaurant week menu. On arriving my party and I were informed that we arrived too early and would have to select items on the normal restaurant menu. We were given the brunch menu and everything that we ordered was delicious. The only thing that topped the experience was the great service we received from our waiter Mike."

  • "We're new to Detroit so far, and this is one of the best spots we've found so far. We had gone to Roma quite a few times, but LDV is much better and at a similar price. We strongly recommend: Escargots in puff pastry, lasagna, gnocchi, and the tiramisu. It's probably the second best tiramisu I've ever had. It might look dry, but that's just how they make it. It's perfectly moist without being soggy, and it tastes delicious."

  • "This place was absolutley exquisite. Both my mom enjoyed the service, food and the quaintness."

  • "Is amazing. Bacon could have been cooked to be served crispy rather than soft, and breakfast sausage was on the salty side, otherwise the quishe, salmon and the LDV breakfast platter was good."

  • "A little gem for dining, tried LDV out during Detroit Restaurant Week. Very very pleased with the entire experience. Our server was knowledgeable, the food was amazing, full of flavor, generously proportioned and presented well. The atmosphere is cozy with live music, a one man guitarist. And the drinks where well mixed, the Moscow Mule is fabulous. I would recommend this place to anyone, and will be returning to dine here."

  • "This is one of the best Italian places in Metro Detroit. Outstanding food and amazing presentation."

  • "Other than being seated six feet from the speaker of the piano player and then moved by request, the food and service was great. The noise level was a bit much, with the piano player amplified."

  • "A delightful experience on every level (except the surrounding neighborhood). This oasis of beauty, culture, and refinement in the midst of where it is place gives LDV even higher marks than the amazing food, flawless service, terrific atmosphere, even the valet workers were terrific. Expensive to be sure, but highly recommended for that special night."

  • "There were 5 in our party and everyone enjoyed their menu and drink selections. The Bumpy Cake, made in- house, was delicious!"

  • "The place is a little hard to find with no sign pointing it out if you've never been. They sat us at a table near an air vent that was on the floor with no cover. If i moved my chair just right i could have easily had my chair leg fall into it. They also turned the air on high while we were eating that made the table cloth blow all over the place and it was umcomfortabley cold. Service was proper however assigned busboy lacked in his job to get water, bread, and clear plates and left most of these jobs to the waiter instead. Food was great with excellent flavors. Ordered the sea bass and shrimp scallop ravioli. Both delicious. Coconut sorbet was the best sorbet I've ever had. Would recommend to any food lover."

  • "Loved this restaurant which we dined at during restaurant week. Service was incredible, as was the ambiance and food. Loved the sea bass, which is not on their usual menu. Beautiful restaurant inside and out in a fairly rough area. Valet secured parking sealed the deal. Highly recommend! Will be back."

  • "We tried this for Restaurant Week and had a great experience. Arrived nearly 30 minutes early for our reservation but were seated right away. Delicious food and great wine list. Although quite busy, our server was patient and friendly."

  • "Food was great. Biggest concern is that our reservation time of 7:45 PM wasn't sat until close to 8:30 PM. It was our first time and it definitely caused some concerns, but our server made up for this. He was friendly and recommended plenty of dishes. I'd definitely go back."

  • "Our reservation was for Valentines Day. The food was AMAZING; we had lamb chops & a steak in a chocolate sauce. One of the best meals we've ever had. I took a friend for Sunday brunch & the bottomless mimosas... ordered steak (a filet) and eggs-perfection. We didn't have a reservation that afternoon so they sat us in a corner of the back room by a loud group of women. We ended up moving to sit at the bar-much better. I would recommend making a reservation regardless of the day or time, so they give you preferred seating. Energetic ambiance & excellent service. Love this place."

  • "Early weeknight dinner. The young, Italian waiter spoke with a heavy Italian accent. That was an authentic plus! Wine selections by the bottle or glass are reasonably priced for the fine quality. The olive oil served with the bread was the best I have ever tried. The calamari appetizer with olives and sauce was excellent. Bruchetta was forgettable (minor negative). Our entrees were superb. The gelato dessert was great. Decaf coffee was weak however I enjoyed the cinnamon flavor. All in all, high recommendations for La Dolce Vita!"

  • "I took my wife here last night for her birthday. I was looking for a quieter, more romantic restaurant for our dinner plans. I found this place and was truly impressed. The restaurant was quiet, there were candles on the tables, the music was subtle romantic music (I hate when restaurants play music too loud), and our waiter was very attentive. The food was outstanding. I think the atmosphere is perfect for a quiet date in a clean, romantic restaurant. I would go here again, and recommend it to close friends. You won't be disappointed!"

  • "I brought my sisters to the brunch for their birthday. We had reservations for 12:00. I was shocked to see how crowded you were so early in the day. The service was outstanding. I never had to ask for a refill on water, he was always there at the right time. Our waiter Mike was marvelous. The food was outstanding and we didn't have to wait long for its arrival. We had a marvelous time and look forward to returning."

  • "I had not been to LDV for nearly 5 years, but was pleased to find that the top-notch food and service have not changed. I went with a large group that had a late addition to the reservation , and the restaurant easily accommodated the extra person. Our server Mike was affable and prompt, and was great with all his recommendations. The food was served quickly and perfectly, and the french toast with sauteed bananas was spectacular. I cannot wait to come back."

  • "Based on others reviews and hour mag's recommendations, we expected more - much more... First off, and this was our own problem - it was quite aways from downtown. I believe it's actually in highland park. We had reservations and were sat at what felt like an add-on table in the corner of bar area that was quite noisy and felt as if the staff forgot we were there. We waited quite a long time to even be approached by server to take drink order. So long that we flagged a busboy to give us water! The food was good but inconsistent. My house salad had the most flavorless dressing on it, but my husbands minestrone was flavorful. The "best" lasagna was mushy and not the best, however my mushroom-y pasta dish was really, really good!"
