A word from La Costanera
Experience the culinary richness of Peru at La Costanera, a modern Peruvian fusion restaurant opened its doors October 2, 2009. The scenic California coast in Montara, overlooks the Pacific, just a short, beautiful drive from San Francisco (21 miles). The space is grand, with floor to ceiling windows, three stories, and 10,000 square feet of oceanfront space, beach views and sea breeze every dinner is garanteed an ocean view.

We also offer a full bar, domestic and imported Peruvian beers and a hand selected wine list. Come try our Pisco Sour – a classic Peruvian cocktail – and experience all that La Costanera has to offer...

At first the killer ocean view, attentive service and friends' urging kept me coming back. Now that I have found my favorite menu items, it is my favorite restaurant on the coast. Tamarind margarita (you have to ask for it- may it return to the menu!) Ensalada Nuovo Andina Chaufa Negra Churros -trust me- they are fabulous Skip the "Causa Bar" (small mounds of whipped potatoes w/ various toppings)- we found just OK- pricey for the amount served ($12 for 3 little mounds)

Nothing exceptionally great. We tried 4 different dishes, wine and dessert. Food preparation was off. You make a mess trying to eat their stew although the flavor is decent if not a little strong. I live close but won't be rushing back.

We started the night off a bit cranky--too tired from along tough week. From the moment we arrived everything changed. Our server, Alex, was charming and helpful, the ambience is not too formal but nice enough for any special occasion. The view is spectacular. And the food! The combination of flavors we experienced was out of this world. Such creative dishes and fortunately small enough to try a lot of different things. We found the langostino and the spare ribs were particularly amazing. And the lava cake and pudding were to die for. We will return at every possible opportunity. We just loved it!

Breathtaking location, one-of-a-kind view, and outstanding food -- can't be beat. Come early and walk on the beach (down a stairway from the restaurant) before a delicious, unique Peruvian dinner.

Went for dinner for our 15 year anniversary. Arrived early and sat downstairs to enjoy the view of the ocean, and enjoyed the fire pits sitting in loungy sofas. Had an appetizer and wine/sangria while down there. Went upstairs for dinner, and enjoyed a most delicious dinner of differring small plates with more wine/sangria. Our waiter had great suggestions and answered our questions on menu favorites. He was there to check on us, but were also able to enjoy our romantic meal. Restaurant gave us free delicious bubbly and we toasted to our special occasion. Will return for thier menu and great ambiance and excellent service!

But bring your earplugs. The open format allows maximum view of the ocean from every table but the noise level on a Saturday night made it impossible to have a conversation. Service was very fast, almost too fast. Still, we enjoyed the tasty dishes and wine selection and will definitely return.

My husband found this spot and we were able to go check it out over the weekend. Our experience didn't start off so great. We were seated and waited about 15-20 minutes before someone even came to give us water or take our drink order. At this point, we were pretty annoyed. However, once we moved past that, the rest of the evening was great. We shared a few small plates and a paella. My husband thought his pisco sour was on-point and I really enjoyed the sangria. I'd definitely go back.

We enjoyed it but the claim of Peruvian food was below expectation. Food came out cold that may be due to Sunday crowd. Traffic was bad and parking lot was full of beach goers, not restaurant guests. The waiter was very friendly and helpful but too busy but Nick is only there as temp. Perhaps the restaurant should consider permanent and professional staff for such a nice property.

We live in Montara, so we frequent La Costenara a lot. This time, we were there for my husband's birthday. We had a fabulous server - Jonathan. What a cutie! He was super attentive and understanding given we had our 14 month old at the table as well. The food was amazing as always, and I strongly recommend the cebiche sampler (yummy) and the Lomo Saltado with egg. My husband was so happy when we got to sing happy birthday and he got to blow out his birthday candle. Thanks to La Costenara for another successful dinner! :)

The ambiance was wonderful. Salad and appetizer were good but our main courses was not. I order the salmon special, it was mushy and had a burnt flavor. I did not finish my meal. The husband had paella. The dish was soupy, shrimp over-cooked but the calamari was excellent. We were disappointed as this was not our first experience at a La Costanera and past experiences were excellent. Not sure what happened this time. Next time I would go for cocktails and appetizers and skip the main course. It is truly a beautiful place.

We were really wanting to try this place being foodies. The food wasn't good. I ordered lobster paella and it was soupy and the lobster tasted like it came out of a can. Our service was horrendous!! My husband actually complained to the manager. If you go at sunset time it is really bright and the sun is right in your eyes. Also it is very very loud. You have to almost yell across the table. Without the location I don't think this place would make it. I have been to Peru and this food wasn't good Peruvian food at all. The only good thing was the pisco sour.

No priority given to those who are celebrating a special occasion. We were denied a prime location request for our anniversary and witnessed them give it to another couple who checked in shortly after us. Judging from their very casual attire of jeans and t-shirts, they were not there to celebrate a special occasion. It was painful to watch that couple enjoy the beautiful sunset while we dined in the back of the restaurant just steps from the hostess table and bathrooms. We had hoped the food would make up for it, but that was a major disappointment too. Now we know why they lost their Michelin star. Complimentary champagne and a card was given wishing us a happy anniversary. That just added insult to injury. Will not be back.

Fabulous ocean view. If you can, go early to secure a table by the railing (closest to the ocean) for the best ocean views. Because you are situated above ocean level, you can still see the ocean from other tables, but the rail tables are far superior. It took me several trips before I found the right dishes for me. I only returned because I had friends that loved the place. I finally found the salad-Ensalada Nuovo Andina, Main course-Chaufa Negra, and killer dessert-Churros. Now it is my favorite place to eat! Pricey, but worth it, and hands down the best place to eat on the coast!

We went to La Coasanera excited because we have heard good things about it. It really is a beautiful setting and we enjoyed the view. However we felt like the service wasn't that great because It seemed like they wanted to hurry us out of there. My husband ordered a second glass of wine, and when it came it was only half as full as the first. The size of the portions were very small for the very high cost, even the large plates. I'd recommend it to a friend only because of the amazing view, The only time we'll go back is if we have people from out of town that we want to show the view. And we won't go for dinner but rather just for the small plates on the patio

Found this when I Googled fine restaurants in the Half Moon Bay area. We are familiar with Peruvian food and found that this was authentic and delicious!! Our server was very nice and friendly, however the service was slow between courses. We found ourselves waiting a little too long between drinks, appetizers, entrée's and desert. If the restaurant was busy, that would have been understandable, but it was not overly busy on the night we went. Overall a great experience and we will both recommend and revisit on our next trip out.

Very, very good food, decor, ambiance. Service was good not outstanding. Not a lot of vegetarian choices on the menu but I'm certain they would accommodate when asked. Parking is terrible, I didn't rate the restaurant based on this. Arrive early so as you can wait for a spot or walk to the restaurant from plenty of spots along the highway or nearby neighborhoods. The walk isn't far but it will be in dirt and gravel. Dogs allowed on the patio which is nice if your a dog owner and at the beach. Patio is a first come first serve with no hostess whatsoever, so unfortunately you have to hover when its busy and I don't like hovering near other guests(also did not rate the restaurant based on this matter)

Decided to try a different cuisine, so Peruvian was it. There was a very large menu and it was so difficult to decide what to try first, so we went with the tapas and was going to expand from there. The tapas was more than enough. A little bite here and a little bite there-we were able to taste and enjoy various dishes. I had a mango margarita-I think this is my new "go to" drink. It was so good. Overall we had a nice time-good food, nice atmosphere, good service.

Came in around 8 on a Sunday and they were pretty full. We were seated immediately and given cocktail options right away. They have a very interesting appetizer menu and we tried all sorts of things that were very good. For the entree she had the scallops which were incredible. I had the ono and it was a tad overdone. The exterior is old school but the interior reminds me of those jazz fusion restaurants that were popular in the early 90's. Traditionalists might find the ambience a little jarring. My only complaint about the space is the noise. Even with the restaurant half full it is almost impossible to have a conversation and this was a bit of a pain. I like being able to quietly chat over dinner without a lot of extraneous noise.

Positives: I had a good time. Beautiful place. Great View. Excellent entrée's. Great service. Cool outside fire pits and bar down stairs. Perfect for group night out with a gang of friends. Negative: Extremely Loud. I did not find it romantic because I could not hear my spouse at all. While we enjoyed the dinner it was a frustrating conversation in a loud restaurant. From the beginning we couldn't hear each other and then the starter was another downer. The Ceviche starter was disappointing. It Had lots of tasty sauce left over almost like a soup to die for but little to eat it with. There were 4 small tables in the rafters looking down only for private parties? Perfect spot for our romantic dinner but I got a no when I asked.
