Diner Reviews
  • "We have been coming here for years and have introduced many friends to the restaurant. The food excels especially the pan roasted duck. My wife and I went last Saturday night at an early dinner hour. There are 2 small tables for twos. Most tables are for 4 dinners. When we arrived, we saw many empty 4 tables and most that were occupied held only 2 diners. My wife was shown to the smaller table while I was parking. When she asked for a larger more comfortable table, she was told that the 4s were not available. As the evening progressed, and the restaurant began to fill up, almost all of the empty 4s were being filled by 2s. (One couple didn't even have a reservation.) We didn't make a fuss when leaving. And it was our Anniversary no less!"

  • "Very odd treatment. Almost dismissive in a lack of interest and quality of care! After so many years, excellant service, very generous 'tipping', not sure if I would ever return to this restaurant!"

  • "Duck a l'orange was outstanding. Of course, it is necessary to order souffle at the beginning of the meal, and it was, indeed, perfect."

  • "This restaurant has everything that we need. A fantastic menu that is not over complicated. Great food and wine. The Bronzino and Dober Sole de-boned at the table with simple olive oil lemon and capers were perfect. The most friendly and yet not imposing service. Giovanni makes a delicious dessert of zabaglione from scratch with mixd berries. We can't wait to go back."

  • "they had an off nite 3 of us had a less than stellar lemon sole the crab stuffing didn't have the taste or texture of crab and was dry and undersauced. the rest of the meal was excellent , incuding pate, tuna tartare and salads"

  • "This is a high end restaurant that caterers to an older crowd. The food was excellent with very creative specials. The staff is very attentive and it would be nice for a romantic dinner. Would recommend to my friends."

  • "One can never be disappointed when dining at la Coquille. The service is attentive, but never intrusive. The food perfectly prepared, old-school french with an innovative twist. Plates are delivered to your table with exquisite presentation and aplomb."

  • "I knew we were expecting trouble based on all the negative reviews of this restaurant, but I had a gift certificate!!! It is very old, and hasn't been updated. The waiter and the few patrons there were at least 65-70 years old. The food was very mediocre given the prices. For example, my salad dressing was drenched in dressing. The fish was so-so. The French onion soup was decent and the pasta tasty but the long-awaited soufflés were awful. hardly a morsel of chocolate in them;definitely not up to par for a fine French restaurant. The waiter was pleasant but wanted us in n out as fast as possible.. He told us the specials n asked us for a food order within 3 min of us sitting down at the table before even asking about drinks! Never again:)"

  • "If you like fine French food and don't want to schlep to the City, this is a great choice."

  • "First of all, you would think by the name of the restaurant that it would be formal French which is not the case -- I would say that the cuisine is light continental with wonderful fresh fish choices and interesting appetizers. For example, I had the vegetable napoleon as an appetizer which was outstanding. My husband had the Dover Sole which was fantastic and my King Salmon was amazing -- cooked to perfection and as fresh as if we were in Alaska! The restaurant is beautifully appointed and my favorite room is the smaller dining room just off of the lovely bar which is quiet and so elegant....you feel as if you are dining in someone's private chateau. Service was attentive and professional and the food was superb! We will be back!"

  • "Each time we have gone to La Coquille in the past 2 years, it keeps getting better. Lovely music was softly playing. The waiter (who has been there for years) was actually friendly and quite polite which was quite an improvement from years ago. The food, as usual, was cooked perfectly. For a Thursday night, the place only had 1 empty table. We enjoyed our meal and definitely will be back."

  • "Everything about La Coquille is perfect! The gracious and knowledgable staff, the beautiful setting and the cooked to perfection appetizer and entree selections. Always a fabulous array of specials available to tempt the palate, and most of all the dessert cart. Don't share one dessert, each party should order their own, then share!"

  • "Was patron of restaurant many years ago and it was good. Made reservation for a special occasion and included this fact on open table. The waiter was annoyed that we were taking our time with the menu. He went through the specials so fast that it was difficult to understand. The courses were rushed-place was over half empty. My wife ordered a glass of champagne-no one was attentive for another glass. My wife wanted a chocolate soufflé but they could not make for one-had to order 2--never offered more coffee-dessert cart was disappointing and looked old. The fact that this was a special occasion was ignored. We would not go back and would not recommend it. There are many restaurants in area with better food and much better service."

  • "Good, classic french food. Complaints are with the service. TV was playing loudly at bar. It totally diminished the atmosphere. If I'm paying $45 for an entree, I don't want to hear tv at my table. When asked, they lowered it but it was annoying that we had to ask. Staff were absolutely apathetic, looking at their cell phone, grabbing food off the dessert tray and eating it. Our patronage wasnt appreciated. At reservation, a birthday was noted and this wasnt acknowledged despite ordering dessert. In a lifetime of eating out, it was a first to not have even a candle. The mention of tableside prep for duck l'orange and crepes suzette is false as they were prepared in the side at the other end of the room, difficult to see."

  • "Nice French food without having to go to nyc and deal with parking or traffic. Service at this price point could be a little more gushing but they warmed up towards the end...maybe because we bought a bottle. Was our 10 year anniversary but nothing special was done. Dover Sole and Soufflé were amazing. I would go back for special occasion."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at La Coquille, once again. We love the restaurant, the staff and the bar. The dining experience is consistently fine, and has been over the years. The Management is very good to the wait staff and the kitchen staff, as they are long-time employees, which makes for a consistently fine dining experience."

  • "We have gone to la coquille many times. Even had a party there. This time I was very upset. The service has gone from fair to poor!! Everything given to wrong person special order placed on telephone was not provided! Asked for nondairy on artichokes request was ignored! LDL asked for no dairy waiter ignored request. I am finally getting to the point where I don't want to fight with the waiter for what is expected. When one is spending &150 for dinner, service should be as wonderful as the food!'n"

  • "We chose this restaurant for our annual meet up with friends from Westchester since it was a half-way point for us. We usually dine at 'trendy' places and I was concerned that this restaurant would be too 'traditional'. Well - Just because a restaurant is a classic doesn't mean it isn't fantastic. We all agreed we had the BEST meal we've had in a very long time. If you're looking for fancy shmancy plating you won't find it here. What you will find is perfectly cooked extremely delicious dishes and perfect service. What else do you want when you go out for dinner?"

  • "Dined twice in two weeks. First to celebrate an occasion and secondly to enjoy a dining pleasure with friends. We love the food, ambience and service. The acoustics afford a civilized conversation to take place. We'll continue to return, being in the neighborhood is an added bonus."

  • "Le Coquille never disappoints, from the moment you arrive, you know you are destined to have a fabulous evening. Attention to detail, inventive specials and attentive staff makes this a hit for my husband and I, or guests we wish to impress!"

  • "Can't remember the last time that we ate at La Coquille, but we wanted an elegant restaurant for a birthday on LI and were hesitant to trek into Le Bernardin in Manhattan so this was a compromise, but a good one. I had Dover Sole and it was excellent and all were happy with their selections. Traditional waiters, a tranquil environment and very good traditional French food."

  • "This wonderful restaurant is often overlooked for newer "hipper" places, but that is a big mistake. The dinner was most delicious. Perfectly cooked Duck a l'orange, moist and tasty branzino and tuna. Attentive, pleasant service and a relaxed ambiance, suitable for conversation and romance. So full, yet finished with a delicious simple chocolate mousse to share. Sweet!"

  • "We arrived and were seated right away. It took awhile before a waiter approached us and we did not receive a menu. The waiter them asked if we wanted drinks and we still did not receive a menu. Then after getting our drinks, it took awhile until the waiter came over, read the specials to us then after that we we're given menus. It's kind of difficult to remember 8 specials and then go throng the menu. The place was noisy and they cooked parts of some meals in the dining are table side. The problem is that when they burned the pan the room got smokey! The desert cart was out in the dining room with whipped cream and mousse in a bowl over melted ice. Not temperature safe at all. I would not return to this restaurant. "

  • "Foie Gras, Smoked salmon, Dover sole prepared table-side, lamb chops, frog's legs, escargot, duck - always find something for the foodie in me here. Never had a bad meal here, ever. A little higher-end here and especially yummy. My usual dessert here - It's not extravagant, but you won't find it anywhere else - floating island. I think it's just egg meringue floating in a "sea" that has the taste and consistency of a thin pudding, but I have to get it whenever I come because I don't see it anywhere else."

  • "The decor should be updated as it is a bit dreary. Service is reminiscent of more formal dining venues dating back several decades; our servers were highly attentive albeit a bit formal. Overall the food was solid. I should add that the cuisine is not truly french and has more of a continental/italian feel. I was a bit disappointed that the sides highlighted on the menu were not presented with the entrees ordered. Indeed all of our entrees were served with the same side dishes. No one complained about the quality of the food although there were no raves either. Recommended dishes include the onion soup, dover sole, mousse and fruit tart."

  • "From the moment we were greeted by the very kind Maitre D,' we were impressed. We were seated at a window table, delighted in the beautiful coffered ceiling and elaborate chandeliers. We savored our martinis served to us in frosted glasses, gallantly poured by our waiter. There were several fish specials which is great for the meat abstainers. We were not rushed and enjoyed the fun energy surrounding us. There is a contemporary bar when you enter which might be a fun place to hang out! We will be dining there again for sure!"
