Diner Reviews
  • "WE ARE FROM MARYLAND AND USE TO LUMP CRAB MEAT IN OUR CRAB CAKES AND NO FILLERS SUCH AS ONION AND PEPPERS. THE FISH WAS EXCELLENT BUT THE CRAB CAKE WAS A DISAPPOINTMENT!"

  • "Our steaks were done just as we ordered, the vegetables were al dente, but the great feeling was offset by a bottle of sparkling California wine which should have been quite dry, but was just begging to show signs of maderization. This is the second bottle (two different wines) we have found to be over-aged; don't know about their storage, but wine should be fresh, not on it's last legs. If you go when the hotel is full, expect to have a long meal."

  • "One of the best restaurants in St. Augustine. A hidden gem!"

  • "If you're staying in the Castillo Real Hotel - restaurant is on the first floor. Very nice way to finish our stay. Unexpectedly good - wouldn't have thought a restaurant of that quality would be in a nice, but not luxury, beach hotel. Seafood was all fresh and well prepared. Service was prompt and attentive, but not overbearing. Noise level would have been a notch lower on the scale but for the presence of a very loud woman at the next table."

  • "It was our second time here, and well worth the visit. Very good menus, quality wine, and the ambiance was first class. Hopefully will make a return visit."

  • "La Cocina is one of our favorite places to eat ! Their menu is international and always artistic. We have had their steaks, salmon, veggie creeps, lamb, and various other seafood dishes. It's hard to choose a favorite. Desserts are also amazing."

  • "Superb cuisine, great service, and atmosphere> The waiters are very attentive. I frequently dine here."

  • "Didn't expect such good food in a relatively small hotel in st Augustine beach. Seafood creeps were excellent. Osso bucco was tender but a little bland. Salad was good and dressings were unique Jambalaya was very good as well. Bread with marinara dipping sauce was nice. Couldn't eat dessert, too full. Wine selection was nice as well. We'll be back."

  • "Everything was perfect. I couldn't have chosen a better place for Valentine's Day dinner."

  • "Mention this restaurant in local circles and you always get the same response: "I LOVE that restaurant - I just always forget about it." You shouldn't because it's one of St. Augustine Beach's (well really St. Augustine as a whole) best places to eat. Many write it off because it's located in the Castillo Real hotel. While the restaurant does serve breakfast and lunch as part of the hotel services, its signature is dinner. Creative and unusual flavors, freshness and presentations in an intimate setting. Service is always exceptional. Whether you're a local or tourist, don't overlook this hidden treasure. Highly recommend making a reservation."

  • "Went to dinner with friends and had a good dining experience. Service was very slow and a bit disjointed but once we received our meals everything was delicious. I would definitely return, but only if not in a hurry and want to have a long night out for dinner."

  • "We've lived in St. Augustine for three years and eaten at many wonderful restaurants. But La Cocina was by far the best meal we've ever had. The atmosphere was elegant, the service outstanding, the presentation beautiful, and the food delicious. We would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Excellent food, great waiter: not sure if the delivery of food was slow on purpose, but I would definitely go back again. A little pricey but worth it with the food being so fresh and artistically prepared."

  • "This is our 3rd time in the past year coming to dine here for date night. The food is always prepared to our requests the first time and the presentation is outstanding. The service is friendly and prompt. It usually takes a good 40 to 50 minutes to receive our food from the kitchen, but it is definitely worth the wait. We will continue to return. Reservations are required and on a weekend, you may need to plan ahead. We truly enjoy the whole package of great food, ambience, wine selection, and service."

  • "We dined at La Cocina with a friend.....we all made quite different choices and we were all very pleased with our meals. The lamb was great, taking half home because of the large portion. Sea bass and rissoto was delicious....my husband had the lobster and shrimp with pasta.... He loved it! We will definitely dine here again...booking online was also a perk!"

  • "I have to say that this is a hidden gem in the St Augustine area as it is on the beach and not downtown. The food was fabulous and the intimate setting is special. This is not your typical hotel restaurateur. You just have to try it to appreciate the experience. I promise you will walk out happy as my wife and i did on her birthday."

  • "We go here every time we visit St Augustine which is about 6 times a year. We took my 90 year old mom there to celebrate Christmas. Our table was right near a big party that were standing around having drinks. A few of the group were about 2 feet from where I was sitting and I felt I was in the middle of their conversation. We could barely hear each other over their conversation. There were plenty of open tables so I don't know why we were seated there. By the time the group came and we realized what was happening we were in the middle of appetizers. The food also was not as good as usual. It was good not great. Maybe the chef had off. We will try it again in Feb when we go back and hope for better as this is normally one of our favorites."

  • "We were staying one night in the hotel and after a long day driving from up north this was so convenient, and the food and service were both great. On Thursdays you can bring your own wine, no corking charge."

  • "Over from the UK and staying in St Augustine over Thanksgiving. Not easy to find a restaurant at short notice but La Cocina gave us a lovely welcome and the staff were most attentive. We both enjoyed the Rack of Lamb, tender, tasty and beautifully presented.. 7 cutlets each!!. We shared the caramalised apple pie with vanilla ice cream, delicious, the pastry was crisp and very short. Yes, OK, it is in a hotel but don't be put off.. give it a go..."

  • "My wife and I drove an hour to try out this restaurant. It was disappointing . The baked brie Appetizer was fairly tasty, the pre meal bread and marinara was very good and my wife enjoyed her chorizo stuffed chicken. My lamb was overcooked and had a very odd soft texture (maybe marinated to death). The sorbet dessert was the best part of the meal. That is the food was not terrible, but overpriced for the quality. The service was terrible. While the table next to me enjoyed great service from Robert , we had to track down the bus boy to get a second glass of wine. I love finding new places to eat and do not mind paying a premium for good food and food service. Unfortunately this was not it."

  • "One doesn't expect to find such a hidden gem in a hotel on the beach in a resort town. The service is impeccable, the food never disappoints and the ambience is pure charm. We ordered the Mahi, which was the special that evening and it was fresh from the sea. This restaurant is our "go to" now to entertain out of town guests and for our own special occasions. Kudos to the Chef!"

  • "Food was good, but our service was very poor. We had to ask for refills on our water more that once. Ordered coffee and there was no sugar or sweetener. Could not find waiter, had to get up (am handicapped as I carry a 10 pd oxygen container) and find someone to get us sugar. Took forever for us to get our checks. Waiter said everyone was using credit cards and it takes longer but he was doing his best, however never did say he was sorry for any delay in anything!!! In all fairness have been there number of times and did not experience as bad a service as this-still not the greatest -could work on service."
