Diner Reviews
  • "We were disappointed this time around. We have eaten here 3 times previously and been very impressed. This time: 1. Octopus stew so spicy we all were miserable. This is the 3rd time I've had this stew. 2. The lamb served with cabbage and fennel had been over dosed with fennel and we kept biting into fennel seeds in addition to the fennel in the cabbage. It was far too strong, overpowering the rest of the dish. 3. We had a trio of gelati for dessert and one had goat cheese in it. Oye ! ! ! The quality of the food seems to be going down hill. I don't think we'll go again."

  • "We were warmly and efficiently taken care of by Philip, who chose a selection of house standouts for us, paired with Sardinian wines by the glass. The latter, being warm climate wines, not always have enough acidity to counter the spiciness. Calamari and octopus were superb, same for the pasta with botarga, not quite so much for the veal. Some tables have a better view of the room than others, but the food and service guaranteed a memorable evening, to be repeated on our next visit to SF."

  • "I'm Italian and an excellent cook. The only time I care to eat at an Italian restaurant is if we go to La Ciccia. Their octopus stew is excellent and reminiscent of my childhood. Their lamb dishes are always fantastic and their artisan pasta is always perfectly cooked with the best sauces. Lorella never disappoints with her wine choices and both she and her husband and chef, Massimiliano, always greet their guests warmly and make you feel like family. This restaurant is one of my children's favorite places to go as well and it doesn't hurt one bit that it's within walking distance of my home so if we overserve ourselves--in both viands and libation--easy to do--we can safely stroll down the street."

  • "Still thinking about the perfect pasta, excellent wine pairing, melt-in-your mouth lamb, and attentive, perfectly timed service. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "La Ciccia is a neighborhood gem. Remarkable Sardinian menu and well prepared. The wait staff was courteous, but most of all the wine list was the best for italian wines that I have seen. It is very hard to get a good cannanau, but this lit has at least 15 of the best. The pastas were outstantding and unusual for San Francisco. I thought that I was in Sardinia and I have been. Coming back!"

  • "This restaurant is Sardinian, has a phenomenal wine list, and the food is interesting and excellent. I cannot get enough of the baby octopus in spicy tomato sauce."

  • "I recently went here with my wife for an anniversary dinner. I had heard good things about the food and wasn't disappointed. Delicious appetizers, pasta, and then the lamb dish. Everything was fresh and had great flavor. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting to enjoy a very good meal :)"

  • "The food was excellent...service knowledgeable and friendly without being intrusive...and reasonably priced for the quality. Only negative was slightly cramped seating but everything else was so good it wasn't an issue. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "We've been to La Ciccia perhaps 9 times over the years. The first few visits were absolutely stellar in every detail. Starting in 2011 and continuing through 2012, we noted an unfortunate decline in food and service quality as the restaurant became more popular. We considered giving up on La Ciccia, but have been heartened to see the place bounce back a bit over the last year. On our last visit, the food was quite good (although seasoning across the board needed a boost). Service was mostly good, but dropped off as the crowd gathered. We waited quite a while for the check, too ... always annoying. However, we will return."

  • "This is the best and most unique Italian restaurant we have experienced. The waiter was very helpful with the menu selection and portions. Service was incredible, quick, polite and timely. Noise level and small space made it more difficult for conversions. Food was outstanding, fresh and authentic."

  • "Amazing food. Incredible service. Zero pretensions. Adds up to one of the finest dining experiences in SF. Their sister restaurant, La Nebbia is another neighborhood gem. And they don't take reservations. So, if La Ciccia is booked, La Nebbia is a great alternative (and just a bit more casual)."

  • "The octopus stew is the dish that has caused me to return. Also, the pasta with squid in a sauce made from their own ink is the best I've had in the Bay Area."

  • "Dinner at La Ciccia is always outstanding. It is what keeps us coming back. The food is lovingly designed, prepared and served. Their objective is the customer is happy and well fed with delicious food. From start to finish, each dish delighted the eye and the palate."

  • "La Ciccia is just a terrific experience. Warm and friendly service, and terrific food that is just different enough to make it a more interesting meal. Love the oven roasted calamari every time. Also a great Italian wine list, including lots of good whites that I don't see often enough."

  • "Had a wonderful dinner at La Ciccia. The wine list is rather interesting with a lot of Sardinian wines of note. The service was friendly and prompt without being overbearing. The roasted calamari dish was the best I've ever had in North America and the best that I can recall in recent memory. All the dishes were outstanding in their flavors and preparation. Will go back as soon as I can."

  • "Just got back from a food and wine excursion in Italy and was having withdrawals. La Ciccia is the next best option to being in Sardinia. "

  • "I was expecting more - perhaps some of the previous reviews were a little enthusiastic - La Ciccia is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant, with very attentive staff and a lovely atmosphere but the food was only OK and generally speaking, a little salty for our taste."

  • "We were seated promptly for a Saturday night reservation. Great food, Sardinian wines, and attentive, but non-pressuring service. We had: squid, pasta special, pork loin, fish, and gelato. All amazing."

  • "Came with 2 others & we all enjoyed our meal very much. My husband who hates octupus loved the octopus appetizer. The squid appetizer was good one. The pasta dish with fish roe tasted heavenly. The squid ink pasta was pretty good too. The pork entree, prepared much like a veal scalopine, was very tasty and the portion was ample. Two shortcomings: Lengthy wine list but none of the wines are from local wineries. Corkage fee is $35 - a real shocker. I recalled seeing 3 desserts on the menu - one is a gelato and another a sorbet. They need to extend their dessert repertoire. Overall, highly recommend this place."

  • "I've always liked this restaurant. My wife loves it. I have never understood how it managed to morph from a former pizza parlor at the far end of Noe Valley to a place of cult status [I have a friend who travels from Taiwan just to eat here!]. The food is good, but that seems crazy. One of the things that I most liked about the restaurant was the graciousness of the hostess, one of the owners I believe. She has been replaced by someone of only limited competence (hence my reduction of score for service). Otherwise, the food is pretty much the same - authentic Sardinian food and wines. The authenticity is what makes it special, I suppose, in an era when restaurants compete to see what bizarre combinations of foods they can think up. "

  • "My 3rd visit and this place just is superlative. I love the way it's way up the JLine metro past Delores Park. Very fine quisine and they help with the excellent Italian wine list. Whenever I see an opening here I change plans and go-it is booked almost all the time. Superb."

  • "Finally got a reservation for La Ciccia. Much overrated with good food, but nothing great. Very nice waiter, helpful and attentive. The main dislike is the actual space. Too many tables way too close to one another. We had to sit next to another couple and heard everything they were saying. It was a Wednesday evening and since the place is sooo small we were given a table right in the doorway of the kitchen since at 6:3o the place was completely full. The special moscatelli with veal and pork sounded good, but I've had much better. The hype was much better than our experience."

  • "4th visit to La Ciccia...seated immediately, food not as memorable as last time, fish was bland and dry, nice wine for $48, the flat bread is still great."

  • "Wow- what a treat to know that La Ciccia is part of our Noe Valley neighborhood. It took a while to get a reservation but it was well worth the wait. The owners are delightful as is the staff. The bottarga spaghetti was outrageous as was the pasta with pork sugo. The octopus stew was spicy and a great way to start our meal. We took home the leftover sauce! The wine list is awesome- some truly unique wines from Italy and Sardinia. The owner steered us to a red from Sardinia called "Noras." At $50 it was a steal. We began our night at La Nebbia- the sister restaurant across the street. They have a nice bar and some great small plates that you can enjoy with your wine. The Nebbiolo was outstanding! We will return (to both places)!"

  • "One of the best meals I've had! Reservations seem to be a must. I made them in their website. The only time I could get was 945 but made note to call if they could get us in earlier. I got a gracious call that they could get us in an hour and half earlier. The staff and owners were so kind. Fantastic food and service!! I will be back! "

  • "A great local Italian restaurant. The pasta is excellent, the service is friendly. Sometimes, it can be too causal and unsteady."

  • "This was our first time here after hearing about it from many sources. We were impressed with the knowledge of our server about the menu as well as the wine list. He described everything in great detail. We had an artichoke special and a beautiful salad for starters. We moved on the a pasta with bortago. and the nightly fish special which was delicious as well. Everything was prepared simply with each ingredient showcased. The only negative comment we have is the gnats. It started with one and by the end of our meal there were 5 circling our table. The table next to us had the same experience. It distracted from an otherwise perfect meal. The owners were present and checked in with everyone which was appreciated. "

  • "Had heard great things but was worried the food would be too rich and upset my stomach. Was impressed with how light and healthy it still was even with so Mich decadent flavor! And I loved the wait staff and hosts. They were very welcoming. Even though I think we may have been the only people there for the first time. I will definitely go back!"

  • "Food was great and everyone who worked there was very friendly. Unfortunately, noise traveled throughout the room and it was very loud. We could here the annoying table behind us discussing their rendezvous in Paris while watching youtube videos. We waited almost half an hour for entree to come out only after we inquired about it. It is possible our order was lost."

  • "I love La Ciccia. Typically the food is exquisite and the service excellent. Not so on this night when, unfortunately, I'd brought some out-of-town guests. The ordinarily thick and rich octopus stew was not. The sardine appetizer and vegetables accompanying the fish special lacked the careful preparation and intensity of favors I've come to associate with La Ciccia. And the long wait between appetizers and the main course was inexplicable. But the fish special itself was tasty and well prepared, as was the pasta of the day."

  • "Worth the ride on the J train to go here. Food is outstanding and different. Service is most attentive. A little noisy as it is a small place but don't let that deter you from trying this family owned business. The lamb is the best though the fish and octopus dishes are great too. One note of caution- the portions are huge! Go and enjoy."

  • "We found the staff very gracious even though our guests were 30 minutes late. I was very impressed with wine list that was loade with wines from Sardegna to match their food (over 200 wines on the list). We had an inexpensive white from Sardegna called Calaluna which I recommend."

  • "Tired of the big name/big chef San Francisco marquis restaurants, we tried La Ciccia - the small storefront Sardinian restaurant in Noe Valley. It was the best meal I have had in years! Intimate surroundings (a little too warm and crowded), an excellent selection of Italian and especially Sardinian wines and attentive yet relaxed service. The appetizers: fresh grilled baby calamari, spicy octopus stew and ultra-fresh grilled sardines were to die for! The lamb, pork and pasta dishes were equally remarkable. Take it from an experienced local diner, this was a true gem not to be missed!"
