Outstanding food with intensely flavored sauces and perfectly cooked seafood. Lovely presentation on beautiful plates. Of note was our super knowledgeable and helpful waiter who was unpretentious and unhurried even though the place was packed. Then there's the massive wine list ranging in price from very reasonable to splurge-worthy. The only downside is that the tables have been crowded in too closely for such a small venue. We were practically part of the conversation of the three tables around us and the overall noise level was fairly high. Squeezing in and out of your chair required some maneuvering. Taking out even one table might help.

La Ciccia is a one of a kind and great restaurant. It just may be the only Sardinian restaurant in the area. Although probably classified as a neighborhood restaurant, it has a regional draw because of both high quality and unusual menu choices. Choices are Italian and continental with a Sardinian twist. The wine list is extensive and probably has representatives of every good winery in Sardinia. The wine list has about 200 choices, few of which were familiar to folks in our party. Wait staff is excellent in recommending wines for various courses. Parking is difficult. If possible, take Muni. The restaurant takes on-line reservations up to 30 days in advance. Try to book as early as possible to assure securing a reservation.

While the restaurant was good, the crowded seating made for a less enjoyable dinner, out table was right in the walkway from the kitchen to the rest of the dining room. Not a good spot if you want to enjoy your dinner.

We had a squid-licious meal at La Ciccia, with a Monterey squid appetizer and the squid ink, seafood linguine. The texture of the house made pasta was incredible and the squid ink and seafood, though strikingly black, were absolutely delicious! Our waiter provided excellent service throughout dinner.

Wait staff is very friendly and the owner is the hostess and keeps an eye on things. Food is exceptional. Their signature dish is the squid ink pasta. If you can't get a reservation, try the pizza place 1/2 block away called La Nebbia. They have great cheese and flatbread pizza too.

From the appetizers (grilled calamari, baby octopus stew, clam, mussels & calamari soup), main course (spaghetti in spicy oil and fish roe, linguine in squid ink, lamb tenderloin, toasted fregola tomato sea urchin cured tuna heart, sea bream dish) to dessert of gelato and Sicilian cheesecake were delicious. Service was friendly, attentive and helpful. Corkage fee of $30 not charged when ordering a bottle from wine list.

Sometimes a restaurant which has gained a wonderful reputation "rests on its laurels", so to speak. But not at La Ciccia. We have eaten here since the beginning, and every time we do, it is fresh and wonderful and warm in every way: the lovely Sardinian dishes coming out of the kitchen brought by attentive waiters, an amazing Italian wine list, all in an atmosphere that allows one to chat with ones neighbors and compare dishes. It is a gift to us from its owners, Massimiliano Conti and Lorella Degan; and we will treasure it, and both of them, as long as we all are here.

The food was all super tasty. Heavy on the salt and flavors but just take it slow and drink a lot. The best thing all night was the calamari, which was fresh squid dressed with olive oil and pesto. The much heralded baby octopus was tender with a very rich, spicy tomato sauce. The homemade olives were high quality. The vegetables were a little bland; the kale was better than the cabbage. The spaghetti with fish roe was on the heavy side but good. The squid ink linguini was very intense, and a bit much after a few bites but okay if punctuated by drinks. The wines were universally superb, and the list is extensive. Service was friendly although not over the top, and they were courteous about bringing fresh plates when the sauces changed. Go!

Highly rated restaurant, lovely website, fascinating menu. However, the food itself was simply not very interesting. Portions are huge. Roasted squid meant a large plate of squid on a thin sauce with lots of arugula. Tasty but not different or interesting. The special fish was well-cooked but bland with large pieces of squash and a spoonful of tapenade (which was delicious). Lamb was succulent but simply sitting on a large amount of coarsely chopped cooked carrots. Service was okay but not attentive. Dress listed as smart casual. Servers are in jeans and most patrons were VERY casual - jeans and tees. Not good for a special occasion. Oh well.

Service is top notch, warm, unpretentious, professional, but as if you were part of the La Ciccia family. Food is prepared with such care & attention to detail. It's mainly about the food, which is brilliant. Regional, Sardinian, cuisine, very authentic (our family is Sardinian) and wonderfully prepared. Outstanding wine list, from all Italian regions, and the staff are really great at making excellent suggestions to match the food. The concept here, of a very localized, regional cuisine, works so well that it makes me wonder why more restaurants don't do this. Highly recommended.

The restaurant is small, seating is cramped, parking is difficult at the Noe Valley location, and it is not easy to get reservations, BUT the food is absolutely excellent. The restaurant has one of the best kitchens in the Bay Area. Sauces are light and delicate. Try the octopus appetizer/first plate - excellent. The serving is large enough to share with your dining companion. Thankfully the wait staff is helpful and can pair appropriate wines with your selected courses. The menu has over 200 Sardinian wines and beers, of which we knew nothing about 99% of them. The restaurant has won awards from the Wine Spectator magazine for their excellent wine list. Award certificates are displayed on a wall in the unisex restroom!!!

We were disappointed this time around. We have eaten here 3 times previously and been very impressed. This time: 1. Octopus stew so spicy we all were miserable. This is the 3rd time I've had this stew. 2. The lamb served with cabbage and fennel had been over dosed with fennel and we kept biting into fennel seeds in addition to the fennel in the cabbage. It was far too strong, overpowering the rest of the dish. 3. We had a trio of gelati for dessert and one had goat cheese in it. Oye ! ! ! The quality of the food seems to be going down hill. I don't think we'll go again.

We were warmly and efficiently taken care of by Philip, who chose a selection of house standouts for us, paired with Sardinian wines by the glass. The latter, being warm climate wines, not always have enough acidity to counter the spiciness. Calamari and octopus were superb, same for the pasta with botarga, not quite so much for the veal. Some tables have a better view of the room than others, but the food and service guaranteed a memorable evening, to be repeated on our next visit to SF.

I'm Italian and an excellent cook. The only time I care to eat at an Italian restaurant is if we go to La Ciccia. Their octopus stew is excellent and reminiscent of my childhood. Their lamb dishes are always fantastic and their artisan pasta is always perfectly cooked with the best sauces. Lorella never disappoints with her wine choices and both she and her husband and chef, Massimiliano, always greet their guests warmly and make you feel like family. This restaurant is one of my children's favorite places to go as well and it doesn't hurt one bit that it's within walking distance of my home so if we overserve ourselves--in both viands and libation--easy to do--we can safely stroll down the street.

La Ciccia is a neighborhood gem. Remarkable Sardinian menu and well prepared. The wait staff was courteous, but most of all the wine list was the best for italian wines that I have seen. It is very hard to get a good cannanau, but this lit has at least 15 of the best. The pastas were outstantding and unusual for San Francisco. I thought that I was in Sardinia and I have been. We've been to La Ciccia perhaps 9 times over the years. The first few visits were absolutely stellar in every detail. Starting in 2011 and continuing through 2012, we noted an unfortunate decline in food and service quality as the restaurant became more popular. We considered giving up on La Ciccia, but have been heartened to see the place bounce back a bit over the last year. On our last visit, the food was quite good (although seasoning across the board needed a boost). Service was mostly good, but dropped off as the crowd gathered. We waited quite a while for the check, too ... always annoying. However, we will return.
