A word from La Chronique

This charming and intimate restaurant serves a generous and creative fresh market cuisine, cheerfully prepared by chef-owners Marc De Canck and Olivier de Montigny. At La Chronique, the pleasures of the table are always front and centre. But in addition to the delights it serves up, the restaurant is also known for its extensive wine list, welcoming décor and impeccable service. Little wonder it's been considered "essential eating" in Montreal since 1995.

I had tuna tartare and sweetbreads. The preparation and presentation were imaginative and perfect. The service was flawless; the wine suggestions ditto. There was enough light, but not too much. Music was audible but unobtrusive. When we were done, and the bill paid, our taxi had been called and was waiting even on the first snowy night of the year.

Went during 'Mtl a Table'. Appetizer Ravioli: 2 tasty small squares. Ceviche of Salmon disappointing; decorated plate of 5 tiny cubes of very plain salmon. One cube had a bone! Main course ' Jarret D’agneau' was good; not great. Scallops 'rotis' were pretty & tasty. But only 3 & small. It would have made a nice appetizer. Had wine pairing with mains. Big wine list but just a couple moderate priced. Considered a bottle instead of -by the glass- waiter picked the pricey ones. Dessert was the most disappointing. A chocolate dessert turned out to be ½ glass dish of mousse. Second dessert was bread pudding with blueberry. Not good. Three triangles maybe an inch each; texture of stale muffin with a couple of blueberries scattered & a dab of cream. Bread Pudding? Portions too small. Food not great. Service ok. Never saw a regular menu. Sorry, can't recommend this.

Food was delicious and perfectly executed albeit predictive. Chicken raviolis/filet mignon and panna cotta were all perfect. Fine dining at its best but not a hot spot, which is what you expect for a romantic date (but maybe not for a bachelor's party/girls night out). The service staff (specifically the somelier) were clearly top of the class. A timeless classic. Fair price/quality ratio.

Surprisingly uneven: No amuse, fine. Bread came after appetizer, due to it "still in the oven" (but came cool?). Appetizer of foie gras terrine with apples yum! but needed more brioche. Main of braised lamb with olives and eggplant was the most delicious highlight! First bite of blueberry clafoutis dessert gave me a mouthful of burned taste; once I cut away the burned corner/side of the dessert, the rest was delicious. Service perfectly polite, but: my appetizer came very quickly (remember, no amuse) and everything else followed within minutes of finishing each course. Made me feel rushed. Then I waited 40 minutes for the cheque (which I had to ask for). Overall 3.5 stars, glad I went and would go back to try again.

This restaurant is a labor of love for its owner-chefs. Traditional but brilliantly executed food. Caring, attentive service. Intelligent wine list. Only slight negative is that the space, though very clean and modern, can be a bit tight and might seem crowded on a busy night. Otherwise, a fantastic experience worth the taxi ride from downtown Montreal.

My husband & I were celebrating our 29th Anniversary and chose to try this lovely restaurant for the first time. We were pleasantly pleased with the variety of food and wine choices and excellent service by Jonathan. Leave room for dessert and if you like Chocolate, they have a decadent one to finish off your meal! Highly recommended.

This is one of the best meals I've ever had - delicious food, beautifully presented. Best a series of little courses - and trust the waiters for excellent wine pairings with each one. Just splendid. And they're very kind if your French stinks, though it is a very Francophilic place.

I reserved Brunch for 2 at La Chronique on Mothers day and was utterly dissapointed with the quality of the cuisine. I had heard so many good things about that restaurant that I felt it was a sure bet. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I ordered the beef and my mother the duck. Both dishes were tasteless and the meat overcooked. I would not recommend for Brunch

The experience was very good overall: the atmosphere is very nice (not too loud, not too bright), the service outstanding (availability, politeness and still very friendly) and the food great too. However, we found it a bit overpriced: no entrées under 40$... For that price, we would expect to be blown away and that was not the case. Don't misread me, the food WAS indeed very good, but just overpriced. In the end, I am not sure the hint of caviar on a plate of halibut was necessary, nor the addition of truffe on sweatbread, which maybe explain the price, but don't really felt like they added that much to a very good meal. We ended up wondering if maybe those ingredients were not added to please an older crowd... ?

This is our first time since the restaurant moved across the street. The staff was different than in our previous experiences but the service was still as professional and efficient. The only disappointment was that we took the wine pairing for the tasting menu and the size of the wine servings were ridiculously small Compared to previous experiences with the same menu Change in policy ? Vs staff decision ? Not sure but needs to be adressed as the price of the experience is not insignificant

I have waited a couple of weeks since our visit to La Chronique to write this review. We had wanted to dine here for years and made the 50 minute drive for our anniversary dinner. Because the experience was such a downer ,we wanted to discuss our poor dining experience with the owner before writing any negative comments. A conversation with him the week later only confirmed the poor attitude taken by owner, management and staff towards any negativity directed towards the establishment. Not recommended. Many better choices in Montreal. Sad that a 500$ dinner could leave such a bad taste.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2005
    Dined on 6/1/2013
The food was impeccably prepared and beautifully presented, but our experience was significantly dimmed by two things. We have a remedial knowledge of French and La Chronique does not have English menus. Although the woman who seated us told us that she "would be happy to help," she gave very curt replies to our questions -- no elaboration whatsoever on any of the dishes. She made us feel quite unwelcome. The second issue is that the space is sterile - really lacks warmth. Perhaps this is just a good restaurant for locals who want to go somewhere where it's "all about the food."

La Chronique has moved across the street from their previous location. The vibe in the long, narrow ground-level restaurant (they have upstairs seating too for special occasions) is a bit trendier and not as cosy as the previous location. However, the creative, just-right dishes and enthusiastic service are the same. Still my favourite Montreal restaurant!

The menu at La Chronique is small, but absolutely amazing. Every flavor left me wanting more. I have already recommended this restaurant to my French colleagues as I think this restaurant is very special. The cuisine is truly art. The restaurant was almost completely empty. We were only 4 in the place the whole night so the ambiance was really poor. On a busier night, I am sure that it would be more enjoyable. I am concerned that if more people don't try this restaurant that it will close! And that would be a real tragedy.

I did much research on where I'd like to hit up for dinner on my weekend escape to Montreal two weekends ago, and something about La Chronique just stood out for me. It was my first time in Montreal, so I wanted to experience the best cuisine the city has to offer. And La Chronique went above and beyond my expectations! Let's just say MINDBLOWING. I had the foie gras to start, not one for it but I felt compelled to try it in Montreal. If you're not into foie gras, like I was, it'll make you a true believer! As for the entree, I had the angus steak. Pure heaven. The wine and champagne recommended by the maitre d' was simply exquisite. They sure do know their alcohol! And the service - the *BEST* I've ever experienced! Hands down.
