A word from La Chronique

This charming and intimate restaurant serves a generous and creative fresh market cuisine, cheerfully prepared by chef-owners Marc De Canck and Olivier de Montigny. At La Chronique, the pleasures of the table are always front and centre. But in addition to the delights it serves up, the restaurant is also known for its extensive wine list, welcoming décor and impeccable service. Little wonder it's been considered "essential eating" in Montreal since 1995.

Diner Reviews
  • "We had a spectacular meal at La Chronique. We hadn't been there since its move to its new location. If anything, it's more beautiful and appealing than before. Food was amazing, service impeccable, music was perfect (how rare is that?), and the total experience wonderful. Bravo!"

  • "Delicious from the first bite - we had fresh breads, salmon tartare, salad with smoked duck (amazing!!) and goat cheese, scallops, beef with 5 different mushrooms. Oh, and the tapioca creme brulee. YUM."

  • "This is one of the best meals I've ever had - delicious food, beautifully presented. Best a series of little courses - and trust the waiters for excellent wine pairings with each one. Just splendid. And they're very kind if your French stinks, though it is a very Francophilic place."

  • "Great venue but still a few details to work on and improve to be the best. I enjoyed my evening but felt it wasn't worth what it cost... So I might go back, but only if I get tired of Europea!"

  • "Un super lunch végétarien. Super délicieux! Des choix surprenants. Vraiment une expérience des plus interessantes!"

  • "We've been to La Chronique many times over the past 6-7 years and never had anything but an outstanding meal, including entertaining servers. This is, arguably, the best restaurant in Montreal."

  • "This is our fourth time at this amazing restaurant and I chose for a special gathering for my wife's birthday. The food was great, as usual. The tartare was to die for. The Belle Glos Pinot Noir was a find (hunting the wine store tomorrow). Fantastic ambiance, great service, I have no problem recommending the place to anyone."

  • "I reserved Brunch for 2 at La Chronique on Mothers day and was utterly dissapointed with the quality of the cuisine. I had heard so many good things about that restaurant that I felt it was a sure bet. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I ordered the beef and my mother the duck. Both dishes were tasteless and the meat overcooked. I would not recommend for Brunch "

  • "The experience was very good overall: the atmosphere is very nice (not too loud, not too bright), the service outstanding (availability, politeness and still very friendly) and the food great too. However, we found it a bit overpriced: no entrées under 40$... For that price, we would expect to be blown away and that was not the case. Don't misread me, the food WAS indeed very good, but just overpriced. In the end, I am not sure the hint of caviar on a plate of halibut was necessary, nor the addition of truffe on sweatbread, which maybe explain the price, but don't really felt like they added that much to a very good meal. We ended up wondering if maybe those ingredients were not added to please an older crowd... ?"

  • "Truly amazing French food! We have been to many French restaurants and this is one of the best! Elegant food done with exceptional attention to detail. The pan seared Foie gras is a must!!! Priced well for the quality of the food! If this restaurant was in NYC it could easily charge 3 times the amount!"

  • "The food is very good, but there is certainly dining as good or better for half the price."

  • "As ever, the dining experience was superb. We wanted to try the reading week special tom see if the food merited the price. Clearly, it was more than we expected."

  • "Given the praise this restaurant was given in Zagat, there was nothing special about the evening."

  • "Year after year La Chronique continues to be the best French restaurant in Montreal. A bit pricy but for an once a year experience it is worth every penny."

  • "From the food to the wine list to the warm and engaging wait staff this restaurant was our favorite of 2013, which is saying a lot given that we live in New York and spent the summer in London and in the South of France. The staff was very accommodating of our 14 year old son. We can't wait to go back."

  • "This is our first time since the restaurant moved across the street. The staff was different than in our previous experiences but the service was still as professional and efficient. The only disappointment was that we took the wine pairing for the tasting menu and the size of the wine servings were ridiculously small Compared to previous experiences with the same menu Change in policy ? Vs staff decision ? Not sure but needs to be adressed as the price of the experience is not insignificant"

  • "Flavours were often good but the focus was on making everything as fancy as possible rather than as tasty as possible. $20 for one ravioli! The filling was awesome but the rest of the dish was just okay making the price just painful."

  • "Average to poor service. Had veal and was worse piece of fatty meat I have ever eaten at a class restaurant. Told the waiter, but he did nothing about it. This was a $200 meal too. Was very loud. Sit too close together and not romantic. Terrible experience!"

  • "My husband and I enjoyed our experience at La Chronique. Service is personable, professional and very attentive. Atmosphere is modern and warm. I enjoyed being able to see the chefs working through the kitchen door window. We are foie gras lovers, and La Chronique's is outstanding with generous portions! Our Duck and Veal dishes were exceptional! We will return to La Chronique the next time we return to Montreal! Thank you for a very special evening!!!"

  • "I have waited a couple of weeks since our visit to La Chronique to write this review. We had wanted to dine here for years and made the 50 minute drive for our anniversary dinner. Because the experience was such a downer ,we wanted to discuss our poor dining experience with the owner before writing any negative comments. A conversation with him the week later only confirmed the poor attitude taken by owner, management and staff towards any negativity directed towards the establishment. Not recommended. Many better choices in Montreal. Sad that a 500$ dinner could leave such a bad taste."

  • "The food was impeccably prepared and beautifully presented, but our experience was significantly dimmed by two things. We have a remedial knowledge of French and La Chronique does not have English menus. Although the woman who seated us told us that she "would be happy to help," she gave very curt replies to our questions -- no elaboration whatsoever on any of the dishes. She made us feel quite unwelcome. The second issue is that the space is sterile - really lacks warmth. Perhaps this is just a good restaurant for locals who want to go somewhere where it's "all about the food.""

  • "The ambiance, food and service has now made this one of our top five favorite restaurants in North America"

  • "La Chronique has moved across the street from their previous location. The vibe in the long, narrow ground-level restaurant (they have upstairs seating too for special occasions) is a bit trendier and not as cosy as the previous location. However, the creative, just-right dishes and enthusiastic service are the same. Still my favourite Montreal restaurant!"

  • "The menu at La Chronique is small, but absolutely amazing. Every flavor left me wanting more. I have already recommended this restaurant to my French colleagues as I think this restaurant is very special. The cuisine is truly art. The restaurant was almost completely empty. We were only 4 in the place the whole night so the ambiance was really poor. On a busier night, I am sure that it would be more enjoyable. I am concerned that if more people don't try this restaurant that it will close! And that would be a real tragedy."

  • "La Chronique recently moved from theirs digs across the street. It's a bit early to tell how they will manage in the new place as it seems a bit colder and darker than the original spot. Hopefully, they will get things in order soon. As for the food, nothing in the move has changed and the same outstanding quality and imagination is provided. It will continue to be one of my favs."

  • "I did much research on where I'd like to hit up for dinner on my weekend escape to Montreal two weekends ago, and something about La Chronique just stood out for me. It was my first time in Montreal, so I wanted to experience the best cuisine the city has to offer. And La Chronique went above and beyond my expectations! Let's just say MINDBLOWING. I had the foie gras to start, not one for it but I felt compelled to try it in Montreal. If you're not into foie gras, like I was, it'll make you a true believer! As for the entree, I had the angus steak. Pure heaven. The wine and champagne recommended by the maitre d' was simply exquisite. They sure do know their alcohol! And the service - the *BEST* I've ever experienced! Hands down."

  • "For 500$ per couple without tip you expect outstanding ... Maby not our lucky night but when the only noise in the restaurent is the sound of cutlery on china and you need to wisper to have a conversation something is off... a little music would not hurt. timing of the service was off soup with no spoon , empty plates parked in front of you and wine glases waiting to be topted off ... At this level of experience and sophistication you expecte flawless execution and atttention to detail by the stff. The worst was that the somelier kept on making sarcastic comments about the fact the we complained cutlery was missing ... Not our best night out for st valentins !"

  • "No wines by the glass, unless the waiter chooses to offer some we were told. That is plain bizarre. Can't modify dishes, even simple substitution for one's diet, if it doesn't suit the chef. Add those snobberies and incongruities to the fact that the music was pop radio and that the design of the restaurant is reminiscent of a much lower end experience, and you've got yourself a bad value altogether with a bid too much attitude. The food was superb, but there's more to it. Charm and humility wasn't part of our experience, but I would be willing to try it again, especially if the wine card was revisited and prices adjusted to actually seek return guests."

  • "Fantastic! We went for New years eve dinner and it did not disappoint! the food was amazing, very rich french with so much finesse and flavor the service was wonderful and sommelier was incredibly helpful and funny, although may look or seem french pretention, there was none, the staff was so friendly and sweet, a great way to bring in the new year! plus we sat in the window seat and watched the snow fall, it was quite a special evening!"

  • "We enjoyed our dinner although I would've rather had the regular menu than the themed menu. We were told it was going to be a themed menu when I made the booking, but we would've liked more specificity and perhaps I would've chosen a different restaurant. On the other hand, my boyfriend was very happy with the all foie gras menu. All the food was very well executed. The first course was ridiculously small. I have not seen a dish so sparsely plated since the 80s. When I shared the photos of my dinner with the people who follow me on social media they were very surprised at how small portions were. We loved the passion of the sommelier and the service was impeccable. We also really appreciated the noise level in the restaurant."
