Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed our meal but we never saw our waiter after he delivered the food. Had to practically beg for another drink. It was a quite different experience than our last time dining here. "

  • "Excellent, excellent restaurant. Absolutely love the restaurant, and the food is reliably delicious."

  • "We had a great dinner! The food was delicious! Duck, trout, mussels - all were excellent. The table stuck out a bit into the pathway of the waiters, so there was some bumping of heads and chairs as waiters went by with trays."

  • "After a marvelous tour of the Kennedy Center, the three of us were eager for a yummy dinner in Georgetown. I searched Google for Best Restaurants in the area, and this one had the highest rating. I thought the odds of getting a table in 30 minutes on a Friday night during the last weekend of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival would be against us, but Flora and Epicurean fortunes were smiling on us! The host and hostess greeting us set the stage for a welcoming and pleasurable experience. The waiter was prompt and friendly while answering our menu questions. There are a number of food choices available, and all of our wine, salads, soups, entrees, and shared dessert were delicious! We were in and out in an hour (our choice)."

  • "I frequent La Chaumiere because of its incredible French food. I always get very goood service and on some occassions I would even rate it as excellent. Unfortunately this was not the case this time. The service was as bad as I have ever had there and I can only qualify it as poor, dissmisive and borderline rude. The waitress on two occassions made inflamatory comments to my guests and completely forgot about us on multiple occassions, it truly was an embarrasing experience. The food on the other hand was marvelous as always, the foie and sweetbreads were delightful."

  • "We celebrated a 50th birthday here last week. There were just two of us and husband, the birthday boy, preferred to sit upstairs where it was very quiet. If you've been in Europe, this will be a very sentimental place. For Americans who are used to quick service, eating and moving on, you may be frustrated. It took awhile for anything to happen, we are cool with that and we enjoyed it. The staff were super friendly and accommodating though and our wine, food and experience was simply beautiful. Great meal, great wine, good conversation....good evening."

  • "Great ambiance, awesome service. A top TOP traditional French spot not yo be missed."

  • "What a waste of time and money! This is an average restaurant living off of its past reputation, and in that they are doing it well. The place was crowded and very loud. Our party of two was seated at the very end of a line of tables against the wall. There was no room for legs and we were next to the kitchen. That did not help in any way since the waiter ignored us. The meals were only average and we each had one glass of wine. With a Danish pastry a la mode, the bill was a hundred dollars. Bottom line - not worth the pain or price."

  • "Would, and have, recommended this restaurant to many of my business, and personal associates and friends..Even strangers form out of town that I have met found the restaurant very nice with great food, good service, and great ambiance Dan Crafton."

  • "This was my first dining experience at La Chaumiere. My friend and I had a late lunch at the National Gallery so we were not as hungry as we might have been! However, the broccoli and asparagus soup was up to the mark as was the Dover Sole. The salad was as it should be. The dessert menu looked worthy but decisions had to me made somewhere! We agreed that we would go back again."

  • "La Chaumiere did not disappoint -- the mussels were amazing (and also enormous portions we couldn't come close to finishing, to the benefit of the rest of the group). One of our party had the onion soup and the lamb chops, both of which he loved. We split two desserts -- the apple tart and the grand marnier soufflé, both of which had to be ordered ahead of time, along with your meal. They were fantastic - my preference was for the apple tart, which I would most strongly recommend!"

  • "La Chaumiere has long been our favorite restaurant in DC and a lunch there Saturday confirmed that it remains at the top. Everything makes one feel authentically in France: The charming decor, the professiona service and the flavor-filled food! My companions had liver and onions (c'est magnifique!) and I the lobster bisque (a lovely blend of wine, cream and lobster flavors) and steak-frite. Best of all were the three order-at-the-beginning desserts: caramel apple tart and two kinds of souffle, chocolate and Grand Marnier. (Although next time I'll probably go for the profiteroles, which are equally good.) We'll keep going back."

  • "Nestled in the heart of Georgetown, this little gem always hits the mark on every level. The quality of the food is consistently high, the menu changes with the seasons and the service is consistently impeccable. Go."

  • "La Chaumiere is lovely, close your eyes and you're in Paris thanking your lucky stars you got a reservation at one of the really good restaurants. We were tucked into a banquette table which was cozy but perfect for a quiet dinner or small dinner party. The menu includes Steak Poivre, which was divine. The Sole Meniere was on special and it was excellent. Similar to Paris, the service was efficient but less than friendly. The ambience was elegant as were the clientele, dress accordingly. I will be returning to La Chaumiere absolument!"

  • "I always feel like i'm back in France when I eat here. Food excellent, service just right, typically French. Their quenelles are the most delicate and tasty I've had outside France; I have them very time I go there. Well-priced, good value."

  • "I read some bad reviews and was a little afraid , but overall the experience was very good. The food is excellent and the ambiance is very good. The waiter was very helpful. The serving of wine and water was slow, I had to ask twice to be served. Except for this detail, I can recommend the restaurant for the food and nice atmosphere ."

  • "Wonderful French ambiance with a classic French menu and then some. Onion soup was perfect. Main dishes of veal piccata and mushroom -seafood crepe were delicious and just the right temperature at serving. Service was first rate. Recommend highly."

  • "In addition to great escargot, endive salad, cassoulet, soup a l'onion and countless other quintessentially French dishes, where else can you find tripe or brains on the menu? Cosy, fireplace in the winter, clearly a favorite local spot to share a meal with good friends with a few in-the-know visitors."

  • "My husband and I absolutely LOVED THIS RESTAURANT!!! I would definitely return when we visit Washington again. Only comment was the Calf's Liver was not the best selection choice. For my taste, the Liver was overcooked; however, the sauce, vegetables were outstanding. THIS IS A WONDERFUL RESTAURANT AND WE CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK!"

  • "We always go to La Chaumiere for our birthdays and special occasions. Marie-Reine, the knowledgable, charming server, always makes it more special."

  • "We got there and our reservation was for 8:30. The couple in our table was enjoying the ambience and they relaxed a bit longer than the normal. La Chaumiere comped us each a glass of house wine for the 30 minute wait. In addition, the food was delicious, the fish--moist and flavorful, the potato crust--crisp. We would definitely go again if down in that area!"

  • "I have been many times, and with just one hiccup (happens to every restaurant once is a while) I have found it to be a true neighborhood gem. Wonderfully prepared, classic French cuisine without the nonsense of "fusion" served by a professional, discrete wait staff."

  • "la chaumiere is one of our favorites. all around pleasant atmosphere, great food, nice service and a willingness to do things that others won't like soufflés."
    Dined on 3/11/2014
  • "We went there before the Opera and the ambience was perfect. The food was good but the server spilled a hot dish of gravy down my dates back. It was all over his shirt and jacket. We don't get out for "date night" that often and this really put a damper on our evening. While they offered to pay for his dry cleaning it didn't really help matters since we were heading to the Opera. It is a hassle to have them reimburse us for the dry cleaning so we won't take them up on that offer and there was no offer to discount the dinner which might have been the easiest way to handle the situation. Not impressed."

  • "I know La Chaumiere has been at this Georgetown location for many years, but it don't remember eating there. I cannot say enough good things about the restaurant! It was a memorable experience in every respect. I had the quenelle appetizer which is to die for and my husband had delicious baked oysters. I don't like calves liver, but I tasted my husband's main course and found the liver to be extremely tender and tasty. My veal piccata was also delicious. Profiteroles were the icing on the cake! Our waiter made our dining experience extra special. He was very pleasant and efficient and he never rushed us."

  • "And a most comfortable setting... The kitchen continues it's tradition of Classic French fare, backed by a well-deserved reputation for high-quality ingredients and excellent delivery; with a dining staff that is every bit as professional. Make this one of your regular favourites."

  • "We had made reservation at 5:30 but I made prior call from the road and said that we are sorry for running late due to a traffic. Fortunately the restaurant was empty when we arrived at 6, so was no problem to getting a table. So we did not understand why the waiters showed such an anger and terrible attitude. He was coming to our table 4 times in 5 minutes and was rushing us to place an order. We just ask him to wait for ten min while our friends are parking, but he reply rudely that is not him, but the manager pushing him. We spend about $60 per person for the appetizer and entries. Wine list selection is very limited and $13 for the glass of house wine is too expensive. We do not recommend this restaurant."

The service was wonderful and the atmosphere was charming. The food was A delight to the palate. I give it five stars without reservation."
