Diner Reviews
  • "We recently were in Marseilles and Provence. La Chaumiere can not compare to the restaurants there."

  • "Yes -- pre-order the apple tart. This simple looking, fine pastry confection is worth planning ahead for. Drizzled with caramel and topped with just the right size little ball of ice cream it is the perfect ending to a lovely meal. La Chaumiere continues to be a reliable favorite for us with classic preparations of some of our favorite French dishes and a cozy atmosphere."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner at La Chaumiere that offers classic French cuisine that is not often found in today's restaurants. The pike quenelle appetizer and veal sweetbreads were a special treat. The chocolate souffle was tasty but a little drier than it should be."

  • "Classic French. Don't really need to say more. This time our server forgot one app and one port but were not charged for either. We ordered a lot of items so we could try lots of the things you simply cannot get elsewhere. Great service otherwise."

  • "Our server really enhanced the experience with his knowledge, patience and suggestions, including sharing an appetizer and dessert. Although the room can be loud we had no difficulty enjoying our meal and conversation. Of you enjoy French cuisine, you won't be disappointed."

  • "The ambience at this restaurant was perfect. There was a warm, comfortable vibe the minute I walked in, as if it were a place I had been to many times before . I was greeted by a very friendly man who showed me to a quiet corner table where I was meeting an old, dear friend who I hadn't seen in years. The wait staff was polite, courteous and had a good balance between serving and interacting with us. The food was delicious and the plate looked appealing, and I highly recommend placing an early order for the soufflé, as it was incredible! As we finished the meal,we looked around and saw so many folks who were relaxed and having fun and it felt as though we were in a quaint little bistro in Paris. Terrific night and dining experience."

  • "La Chaumiere is consistently excellent which is probably why they have been listed as a best restaurant in DC for decades. It's not a trendy place but that in and of itself is part of the charm and don't miss the souffle. They are amazing."

  • "Went for our anniversary. It was a special evening for sure."

  • "Disappointing meal. Presentation was fine but the fish, Dover Sole, had no flavor. Lobster bisque had no pieces of lobster. For the price, $200, you could do better elsewhere. The service was excellent with professional waiters carefully monitoring the table. I wonder if they eat there. The room is very attractive but the small area means conversations are public knowledge."

  • "Took a friend to celebrate his 70th birthday. From my quenelle appetizer, to the Dover sole, to the apple tarte for dessert, it was a superb meal for me. My friend chose a lobster bisque to start and then ordered the sole and tarte. He was just as enthusiastic about the meal as I was. It was an excellent choice and a delightful evening for both of us."

  • "My wife and I ate here on a Wednesday evening. We made a reservation at 5 pm because we wanted to see the National Mall with the lights on after dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, service and food. The waiter offered to have the chef customize any of the pasta dishes for any combination of sauce, pasta, meat, seafood, etc. I took him up on it and added lobster chunks to the dish that already had shrimp and scallops. We took 2 desserts to go and enjoyed them after walking a few miles on the mall. I sincerely recommend this place."

  • "My husband and I have been coming to La Chaumiere for over 35 years and I have always found this restaurant to be excellent."

  • "We truly enjoyed this Georgetown gem. The service was just exemplary, and the meal was outstanding. The server kept my wife's allergies in mind throughout, either making recommendations for alternatives, or having the kitchen accommodate her health risks with changes to the dish. The menu was so diverse, we struggled to order, but found what we were eventually served to be excellent and beautifully prepared. BTW, don't be afraid to order the House Sancerre; it's delightful and relatively inexpensive. Oh, the meal was very reasonably priced. Georgetown reasonable."

  • "We (2) were seated promptly, with warm welcome at comfortable table with view of inviting room, which while cozy provides ample room for private conversation. The waiter (dark-haired, French GENTLEMAN) is consummate professional: friendly, engaging, attentive but not intrusive. Perfect service cadence: waiter was in tune with our specific needs, and thus delivered food at just the right time, never interrupting conversations, soliciting input at precisely the right moments. Food was just what we had sought for the occasion. Dinner partner had sole special--at $41, pricey but well worth it. I had salmon en croute: moist, fresh-tasting salmon encased by pastry that flaked effortlessly. Souffle: tasty but dry. Wonderful! We shall return."

  • "I cannot say enough good about this restaurant. My husband and I found it by accident and fell in love. The food is amazing and the service is equal to the food. I cannot believe this restaurant is not recommended in the top 5 French restaurants in the DC metro area. My husband and I search as we love French food and never saw this one. I will personally tell everyone I know how great it is!!!"

  • "Went here for dinner on a date. The service and food was excellent, the venison in particular was very good. The seating though is more cramped than I'd prefer, you're pretty much on top of the people next to you. Which can be fine, but your experience might depend on which groups are to your left and right."

  • "Nice French restaurant . A little very on the sauces. Probably would give it a four instead of 3+but went to a great one the night before (cafe du parc)"

  • "Our dining experience could not have been better for this special milestone birthday. The waiters were especially attuned to the "birthday girl" and fussed over her all night, which she loved! Thank you La Chaumiere for making it such a great evening!"

  • "La Chaumiere is a favorite, and the kitchen continues to live up to my high expectations. Took a Russian friend who scandalized the server by asking for a streak medium-well, but they did what was asked."

  • "La Chaumiere has everything you'd hope to find in a French restaurant. Charming atmosphere and lots of great French standards. We were lucky enough to be there on a Thursday evening when they feature Cassoulet. It was quite authentic and very good. All the others at our table of 4 were equally pleased with their selections. Service was cheeky but good--as you would expect from a French waiter. Will definitely go again. "

  • "Vichyssoise. REAL vichyssoise. Cold and creamy. Quenelles. One of the few restaurants to serve quenelles. Heavenly light and smooth with delicious sauce Nantua. The fruit tarte was perfect. The cream was very light. ( Some pastry chefs make the cream too thick and pasty.) The coffee was real coffee, full-bodied."

  • "We wanted somewhere special to enjoy an evening meal on our wedding anniversary. We were not disappointed. The ambience and food were first class and of particular note was our waiter's attention to detail, his attentiveness and his knowledge of the food and wine. "

  • "The service was uneven... the couple at the next table which came after us had entrees before two of us.... The scallops were so thin, it was obvious that it was sliced to increase the portions in appearance only....."

  • "La Chaumiere continues to exceed expectations, this time for a special evening out with a family member. High notes? Too many to count, including atmosphere, wait staff, and menu. What to try? Les Escargots, Clams on the Half Shell, Magret de Cannard (Duck), Veal and more. Make sure you sample several wines on the wine list. Recommendations from the attentive waiters are always on target. Dessert? Try the tart and souflee options. Terrific! "

  • "Having been to La Chaumiere a few times now, I can say that I have never been disappointed. In fact, I have been more than pleasantly surprised at the range of menu selections and the quality of the offerings. The atmosphere is quiet and inviting and the wait staff are attentive but not intrusive. La Chaumiere will remain on our go-to list of top DC restaurants."

  • "The food and service were excellent. We had to rush for a 7:00 show at the Kennedy Center and the staff helped us tremendously to be able to get out on time. But on my next visit I will not plan such an early show. The place and people are so nice and the meal so delicious that you really want to slow down and take it all in. Thank you La Chaumiere for a wonderful evening."
