After wanting to come here for years, we finally made a point to go. Had heard the food was great but the service was exceptional. It did not disappoint. We were greeted by name (we had a reservation) by a very friendly hostess. She also noted from our Open Table reservation that we were first-timers here so she selected a table she thought we would enjoy for our first time at the restaurant. That was an attention to detail that really surprised me. We had the petite filet and the crab legs - which were both divine. Great wine list and I liked that the manager came by twice to check on us. We look forward to going back soon.

I love this place! The underground hidden gem. My first time here was over 20 years ago. The early dinner crowd seems to be mature locals. The later it gets, the younger the crowd gets until it becomes the late 20's to early 40's classy nightclub atmosphere. It was Thursday night with an important NFL game for the AFC West. The game was on several screens around that bar that you could see from most dining tables, but in the way you could enjoy if you wanted to but not at all in an overpowering sports-bar kind of way. The service is beyond 5-star, as is the food. Plentiful cabs were available, and an inexpensive cab ride to most anywhere in Newport Beach. We had lobster, king crab and filet mignon, twice baked potatoes, soup, salad, bottle of wine -- for about $125 for 2 of us. All of the food was perfectly prepared. I have been here probably 10 times in 20 years, and the ambiance, food, and service is always impeccable. I highly recommend -- but not for kids -- it's high-end and patrons enjoy the quiet. I personally have 3 children, and enjoy a special occasion there with just myself and my husband and appreciate that I haven't seen/heard other children there disrupting the ambiance.

Looking for a nice restaurant online for our 3-year anniversary, La Cave looked appealing for a steakhouse type of atmosphere. When we got there, we found it to be in the basement of a commercial building in a dark environment – old school bar. But on the way down, the food smelled great! The staff was very helpful and eager to seat us. Although we were early for our reservation and offered to sit at the bar to wait, they found seating for us immediately. Adding to the old-school feel, we were seated between two couples that were in their 80s or older. Formally dressed, they were very cute! But the patrons in the bar were yelling so loudly – we were on edge when the language got too vulgar. You could see it in the eyes of the older folks, and we began to scope out seating elsewhere. Just then the owner came up and offered seating in the next room back. (The owner was amazing throughout the night and constantly circles to make sure everyone was happy – from when we arrived she offered bar seating, to when we got our check she asked how we enjoyed ourselves! Fantastic!!) We were seated to the rear and had a great dinner – but it was overall quite a casual experience. Although quality food and drink, conversation was laid back and catchy with a lot of joking. We had fun and the fun continued as the crowd slowly shifted to a trendy younger group to see the band setting up on the stage right next to us. The band was polite asking us if it was OK to set up, and they talked to us a lot during the show. Very hip crowd and we enjoyed staying after we paid our bill to have a drink from the bar and hear a few songs. We may be back, but we might be looking for somewhere with a better view – or at least with windows on our next date night. Thank you for the fun and memorable experience!

I really like this place, but haven't been here for years, it hasn't changed one bit. In the past, me and my wife have always gone late, grabbed a spot at the bar and had drinks, steak bites, cheesy bread and mushrooms. The cheesy bread is simple, but as addictive as anything on earth. This time we had dinner with a drink, a bottle of wine and entree and mushrooms to share. I had the Rib-Eye and my wife had the King Crab legs. The Crab was wonderful and perfect. Juicy and flavorful. The steak, not so much. The mushrooms are the best anywhere. Back to the steak. I was a bit disappointed and won't order the Rib-Eye again. It wasn't tender or flavorful. I make a better steak on my BBQ with a choice steak purchased at a big box grocery store. I will be back for the bar, apps and entertainment in the future. I'll even come back for dinner, but I won't order the Rib-Eve. The jazz nights are great. The steak bites on the appetizer menu are much better than the Rib-Eye on the dinner menu. The crab, I would return for. Not as pricey as other steak joints, so the quality isn't quite on par either. Bill was $150 before tip. Service was attentive. If you want to go out for a great steak in the area, stick to Mastros, Mortons, Ruth Chris.

I've been to La Cave on several occasions during the weekend for drinks and the late night entertainment. The restaurant always smells amazing and wanted to try their food. Our server was nice and friendly. There is no physical menu; therefore you aren't seeing the price of the food you are ordering. The waitress brought over a cart with the raw meat and rattled off the menu. The new house cab wine isn't as great as the previous house, it’s oakier. The garlic bread that they are "known for" was simply toasted white bread with butter/oil garlic spread. Tear. The New England chowder was delicious. The side salad was more nostalgic than it was good. Classic romaine tossed in loads of dressing. All I was missing was club crackers. The steaks were cooked perfectly. My filet tasted more charred compared to my boyfriends... His steak tasted buttery. I would recommend the sautéed mushrooms. The carrot cake was moist and the cream cheese frosting wasn’t too sweet. Sadly, I will not be going back for a dining experience but I will be going back for a chardonnay and entertainment.

I had the steak and crab and it was delicious. I ordered my steak medium and it was slightly over cooked but still very good so I didn't bother sending it back. We went on a Monday night and there was a Frank Sinatra tribute singer (I believe he is there every Mon). He was very entertaining and taking requests. The menu is pretty limited to steak, lobster, fish so probably not a good place for children, which I appreciate for a good date night spot. I loved the ambiance and throwback lounge feel, I will definitely be returning.

We went to La Cave for the first time ever for our anniversary on the recommendation of a friend. My husband loves those red booths but we were wedged into one in an alcove with another couple close by which felt kind of awkward. Privacy with strangers. Husband really like the place but I found it kind of claustrophobic -dark and cramped. The food is good however and we did enjoy ourselves.

I've been wanting to check out this classic steakhouse ever since I lived down the street 15 years ago, and just never got around to it till now. What a treat to take the elevator down to the basement where folks first started having cocktails and dinner when JFK was president. My only minor gripe was that the prices of the meals weren't written down (though they were for drinks and wine), and of course you're embarrassed to ask, since it definitely feels like "if you have to ask, you can't afford it." For the record, our two perfectly-cooked filets, complete with the delicious twice-baked potatoes and salads, came to about $78. $127 with drinks, wine and tax. So not as steep as it could have been. We'll definitely be coming back!

We came for restaurant week & were not disappointed! It was hard to find since the elevator isn't clear that it's in the basement, normally the parking garage is the basement! We & another couple were trying to figure out where it was, when Finally after we found out it's the basement, one guy says "Ah...the cave!" Generous portions of yummy steak!

The web site advertises a Full Course Dinner, three choices for $27.95 Monday - Friday. We were there on Monday and the waitress said the special on Monday was prime rib, the special we asked about (per web site) is Tues - Thurs. We showed her the web site on our phone and she said they would honor that price. The food was good but they need to change that advertising. We were never asked if we wanted to order another drink, I think she was annoyed with us!

Looks like another old time restaurant going down hill. Place was mostly empty on a Saturday night, which should have tipped me off. The food was ok but not great and not worth the money. The only reason I went is that my Sweetie likes the place, otherwise I would never go back.

Last time I went here was about 5 years ago and it was great. Excellent steaks and service in an interesting setting. This time, the steaks were terrible. My husband, who is the ultimate carnivore actually said it was the worst steak he's ever had. Service was mediocre. I don't mind spending a lot of money in dinner, but it better be good. La Cave was a complete waste and disappointment. Too bad, because this is one of the last "Old Newport" spots and was always good for a dose of nostalgia.

Very impressed with the Open Table reservation system. Our table was ready at the requested time, even though our party did not entirely show up until 45 minutes later. The server was attentive and offering us drinks from the bar while we waited. The food was delivered quickly and efficiently, even thought there was was a private party of 45 in attendance. As always, the food was grilled to perfection. We did not stick around for dessert, but I am sure it would have been just as good as the main entree.

La Cave does not offer a menu, but rather rolls a cart with all of the offerings for the evening. Beware, there are no food prices provided in writing or orally. The wine list did provide pricing, which for finer dinning was reasonable, thus the assumption was made that the food would be equally reasonable. There was a sort of sticker shock, $597 for a party of 6. I think the most annoying aspect of our La Cave evening was that the service was sub-par. We had to continually ask for water and ice tea refills, garlic bread (which was much smaller slices than remembered) napkins, etc., etc. I will say that our waitress was very good when she was available, I'd give her 4 stars.

I enjoyed my dining experience at La Cave. I got the filet and half lobster with stuffed potato and I ate the entire entree because I liked it. First of all the service was excellent, no doubt about it for birthday party of 9. The feel was just what we were looking for, dim lighting, underground with old school vibes traveling back in time. Sinatra night on Monday was excellent. The steak on the other hand was just ok, nearly burnt and overcooked. How do you burn a steak that was ordered medium rare? I thought it was just mine so I didn't mind holding my tongue for the sake of keeping the party going. Until after we finished, multiple others had the same thoughts on the steak. Also, the lobster was poorly cooked to the point where it was almost like chewing rubber. The twice baked potatoes and mushrooms were delicious and the only thing I'd go back for besides drinks.

La Cave was an interesting place to say the least. Classic 1940s, New York style underground restaurant feel. (considering I'm young, I'm going based off movies) My opinion of the food was that it was good, although feel as though I could get better and fresher for cheaper. Bar scene is very nice and would have preferred to make it a drink night. Last note, I would have preferred better service. We were never asked if we wanted refills and service was unpleasant. Decent food this time around. Way too loud. Would have rather spent another 20-30 to go to Mortons, Flemings or Ruth's Chris.

Walking into this place is really bad. There are large ashtrays lined up against the wall to the elevator and the place stinks but once you get downstairs to "the cave" it actually is a cave. The shrimp cocktail sauce is great but the shrimp are very "wet" and without a lot of flavor. I must say though, that the filet was absolutely fabulous - cooked to perfection and such outstanding flavor. The meal comes with a baked potato and a salad. I ordered the broccoli which was also very good. The prices are reasonable for the quality of food. The small filet was around $25
