  • "The web site advertises a Full Course Dinner, three choices for $27.95 Monday - Friday. We were there on Monday and the waitress said the special on Monday was prime rib, the special we asked about (per web site) is Tues - Thurs. We showed her the web site on our phone and she said they would honor that price. The food was good but they need to change that advertising. We were never asked if we wanted to order another drink, I think she was annoyed with us!"

  • "Looks like another old time restaurant going down hill. Place was mostly empty on a Saturday night, which should have tipped me off. The food was ok but not great and not worth the money. The only reason I went is that my Sweetie likes the place, otherwise I would never go back."

  • "Last time I went here was about 5 years ago and it was great. Excellent steaks and service in an interesting setting. This time, the steaks were terrible. My husband, who is the ultimate carnivore actually said it was the worst steak he's ever had. Service was mediocre. I don't mind spending a lot of money in dinner, but it better be good. La Cave was a complete waste and disappointment. Too bad, because this is one of the last "Old Newport" spots and was always good for a dose of nostalgia."

  • "Very impressed with the Open Table reservation system. Our table was ready at the requested time, even though our party did not entirely show up until 45 minutes later. The server was attentive and offering us drinks from the bar while we waited. The food was delivered quickly and efficiently, even thought there was was a private party of 45 in attendance. As always, the food was grilled to perfection. We did not stick around for dessert, but I am sure it would have been just as good as the main entree."

The people treat you like you are their only customers and it is evident in the returning customers you see on every visit. Truly an A+ experience. My favorite is the swordfish."

  • "La Cave does not offer a menu, but rather rolls a cart with all of the offerings for the evening. Beware, there are no food prices provided in writing or orally. The wine list did provide pricing, which for finer dinning was reasonable, thus the assumption was made that the food would be equally reasonable. There was a sort of sticker shock, $597 for a party of 6. I think the most annoying aspect of our La Cave evening was that the service was sub-par. We had to continually ask for water and ice tea refills, garlic bread (which was much smaller slices than remembered) napkins, etc., etc. I will say that our waitress was very good when she was available, I'd give her 4 stars."

  • "I like how the restaurant is in a basement, fitting the name La Cave. The environment is very romantic and relaxed. Cocktails are pretty good. I had the filet mignon and lobster tail combo and both were really juicy and tender. I would recommend this place. The price is okay, a little bit on the expensive side."

  • "Great steaks, cooked to PERFECTION. Perfectly grilled to your liking. Charred medium rare was probably done the best ever for me. Diet, cleanse, or starve yourself first but don't scrimp on what you order, make it a feast. Also great music for all ages, pick your night for your type of entertainment. The BEST in great casual dining. Almost forgot, Huge king crab legs and lobster the shrimp dish is a great appetizer"

  • "I enjoyed my dining experience at La Cave. I got the filet and half lobster with stuffed potato and I ate the entire entree because I liked it. The bartenders make a great drink, one of the best martinis I have had. The atmosphere was just like the show Mad Men. I felt like I was going back in time. Our waiter was Christopher and he was really helpful and knowledgable about suggesting what to get for drinks and food. All over great place and I will be dining there again soon!"

  • "We had 6:30 reservations and arrived at 6:30. As soon as we sat down our waitress wanted our drink order, and to take our dinner order. By 7:05 she had delivered drinks, salads and the main course. We were out of there at 7:30. Focus was on turning the table, not allowing us to enjoy our night out. I've had more leisurely meals at Mimi's Cafe."

  • "First of all the service was excellent, no doubt about it for birthday party of 9. The feel was just what we were looking for, dim lighting, underground with old school vibes traveling back in time. Sinatra night on Monday was excellent. The steak on the other hand was just ok, nearly burnt and overcooked. How do you burn a steak that was ordered medium rare? I thought it was just mine so I didn't mind holding my tongue for the sake of keeping the party going. Until after we finished, multiple others had the same thoughts on the steak. Also, the lobster was poorly cooked to the point where it was almost like chewing rubber. The twice baked potatoes and mushrooms were delicious and the only thing I'd go back for besides drinks."

(considering I'm young, I'm going based off movies) My opinion of the food was that it was good, although feel as though I could get better and fresher for cheaper. Bar scene is very nice and would have preferred to make it a drink night. Last note, I would have preferred better service. We were never asked if we wanted refills and service was unpleasant. Might rethink coming back."

  • "Walking into this place is really bad. There are large ashtrays lined up against the wall to the elevator and the place stinks but once you get downstairs to "the cave" it actually is a cave. The shrimp cocktail sauce is great but the shrimp are very "wet" and without a lot of flavor. I must say though, that the filet was absolutely fabulous - cooked to perfection and such outstanding flavor. The meal comes with a baked potato and a salad. I ordered the broccoli which was also very good. The prices are reasonable for the quality of food. The small filet was around $25"

  • "The staff did not know about the Costa Mesa restaurant week deal going on. The food was okay. We got the filet medallions with a mushroom sauce, soup and a twice baked potato. Also had one chocolate cake to share which I thought we would get our own. The server said one per table and didnt realize the cake was part of the Costa Mesa restaurant week deal. He thought he was giving us a free cake. Overall it's okay. We won't be coming back here. The walk way down to the underground restaurant smelled like number 1."

  • "I enjoyed the restaurant the food was good and the service was outstanding. The only concern I had was with the Open Table Reservation Service. My wife and I were celebrating our 24th anniversary. I ordered flowers from your website to be delivered to the restaurant and they never arrived. The florist and the restaurant both confirmed the flowers were ordered. I did receive a very nice call from the restaurant manager apologizing and offering a free dinner. I realize that it was not the fault of the restaurant, but they went out of their way to remedy the situation."

Maitre d' called to confirm a birthday dinner, but nothing was acknowledged when we got there. After we received the check, we had to pack our own left overs and pour our own wine. Something different from other restaurants."

  • "Do not go to this restaurant for the food. You select your protein -- fish or beef -- from a selection of raw samples of what is available, from a cart that is brought to your table. There are no indications of how it will be prepared or what the price is. The meal starts with a bread basket filled with white sandwich bread that they turn into soggy garlic bread. I have heard that it is a fun place after 10:00 pm, but we were long gone by then. And the wine list.....very similar to the selection you would find on the bottom shelf of the grocery store."
