Service was attentive by our main
waiter but we did have to ask for water. Waiter happily agreed to split the chopped salad, which was a good thing as it was quite large. I got a halibut special that was very well cooked. I really enjoyed the flavor of the fish and cilantro sauce. The Mexican rice and grilled veggies on the side were also quite tasty. My husband didn't fare so well. His steak was quite rare even though he asked for medium rare, the the potatoes were uninspired. "

Not what we were expecting. Very
disappointed. Food was not exciting. It was ok but for the price I expected more. "

My wife (who is Japanese) has
incredible intuition at picking places out of thin air. This restaurant had a 3-4 line mention in Texas Monthly and she picked it. Great pick! We were surprised that the place is not more packed given the outstanding steaks - best we have had in years. "La Casa del Caballo" is is doing TRUE innovation. "Mexcian Steak Restaurant" Huh? This is not one of the officially approved "Foodie" categories. However, it works VERY well. Service was outstanding and everything was outstanding, from the hand-stirred margaritas and the complimentary appetizers, to the simple but beguiling soups, through awesome steaks, to the wonderful tres leches cake. We loved it! "

We were stopping over in Houston
as part of our honeymoon and friends recommended La Casa del Caballo. They were absolutely right! Our waiter really knew his food and clearly articulated the difference between the various cuts. Taking his advice, we started off with Queso Fundido and this was indeed a special, well prepared dish. We then went for their special cut, Cañita de Diezmillo Asada. This was very tasty and it was exactly as the waiter described it to us: very similar to tenderloin, but with a slightly more "meaty" texture. The suggested wine also matched very well. The owner (who had offered us an aperitif on the house to celebrate our honeymoon) stopped by for a chat - really nice. All in all a highly recommended place to dine!"

We ate at Casa del Caballo on a
Tuesday night. Not crowded at all. Food was awesome, especially the brisket. Service was slow, and the waiter completely forgot to bring my wife's coffee with her dessert. He wasn't apologetic, either. I'll give them a second chance, but I expect better service at a restaurant in this price range."

We enjoyed another meal at La Casa
Del Caballo. We had the CAÑITA DE DIEZMILLO ASADA and Pollo en Salsa Chipotle. They were both excellent. The restaurant was busier than the last time we dined here, so I am happy to see they are growing. Clearly the owner has spent time and money to execute his vision in Houston. The service is friendly and the food enjoyable."

I had heard about the restaurant
on the radio, and read some other reviews. Booked reservations for my 2nd wedding anniversary. From the time we walked in till the time we walked out, the staff made us feel like we were their only customers. I had the center cut rib eye which was cooked exactly the way I like it. My wife had the snapper with lump crab meat and shrimp as big as my fist. Also had the queso fundido as an appetizer, which I highly recommend. Will certainly be coming back soon, but this time with a group of 6 as I want to the 4 lbs. rib eye cap that is slow cooked for 45 min."

This has become a favorite spot
fora great steak, and a nice bottle of wine! The meats are always tender, smokey, and the portions are large. This place is great and should not be missed."
Dined on 4/12/2014
I have been to La Casa several
times. The steaks are consistently the very best in town, or a lot of other places anywhere. The service on the evening of Friday, March 28th was not optimal. There was confusion between the servers, greeter, etc, has to who handled the drink order. It took a long time for the drinks and the water we requested to come out. Seemed very disorganized. But, again, food is great!"
Dined on 3/28/2014
Too expensive for just average
food... $40 for a piece of halibut...$20 for chicken enchiladas would be ok if they were outstanding but sadly neither was"

We chose La casa del Caballo for a
night out away from the nights to relax. We definitely accomplished that. The place is clean, atmosphere is wonderful, and the food and service are excellent. We will definitely be back."

I don't write reviews. But I want
this restaurant to stay open forever. The very best prepared meats in the city. Perfectly cooked, wood smoked, juicy and very flavorful. Make a reservation. Today. You will love it."

This is our favorite special
occasion restaurant, and the staff treated us like stars for my husband's birthday."
Dined on 3/15/2014
Restaurant was small and quaint.
Everything we had was fantastic!"
Dined on 3/14/2014
I went here with my husband for
valentine's day. The ambiance was perfect and the food was really good. With so many good steak houses in Houston, I wouldn't call this place my favorite but it was a good change of pace."
Dined on 2/15/2014
Our food was wonderful but the
waiter was way less than desired. The waiter forgot to put our order in and had to be reminded what we ordered. Then it took a while to get the order even when asked the second time. Our side orders were never brought out either. I had to ask for my water to be refilled a second time before it was actually done. They claimed to be short staffed for the night but others came and left while we were still waiting. Our desert was free but I felt like I should have asked for the whole meal to be free. We'll try it again because the food was so good. Maybe it was just a bad night."

Took my parents there for a thank
you/celebration dinner. Service was great. The Sirloin for 4 was excellent, but pretty fatty."

Loved the food and the service.
Took a group of six and went family style. Steak was outstanding. Waiters were outstanding. Just a perfect evening with friends and food."

First time at restaurant.
Excellent wine and bar. Had enchilada appetizer with luncheon steak with grilled vegetables. Food was excellent. Will try different items next visit to check out other items. Service was great!!!"

Placed in the heart of the
Montrose area, this restaurant is so elegant, with an upscale flare... It was mine and my husband's wedding anniversary and we chose this place from hearing about it on Michael Berry's radio show. We checked out the website and knew we wanted to try this place out. The staff was so nice and professional, the wine list was astonishing, and the food was magnificent!! It's a definite "will go back" for us, and we plan to bring family with us next time."

If you are looking for meat with
some interesting sides, try La Casa. The meat was well prepared and tasty. I had the sirloin with Saltillo cheese enchiladas. Excellent. Others at our table tried the lamb chops and brisket. All familiar meats done just a bit differently. Nice starter plate of olives and queso with some interesting sauces. We will be back."
Dined on 2/13/2014
The food and service were only
bested by the quality of the food."
Dined on 2/12/2014
This place is amazing! I've dined
her twice and each time my steak was prepared perfectly. The service is outstanding and it's a beautiful restaurant. I definitely recommend very highly."

We enjoyed our meal at La Casa Del
Caballo. Clearly the owner has spent time and money to execute his vision in Houston. The service is friendly and the food enjoyable. It's a tough location as many restaurants have failed here. It was not busy during our visit but I hope people will give it a chance and make this restaurant a success."
Dined on 5/30/2013
Had a great meal with my
girlfriend here. We ordered the Queso Fundido appetizer, and I had the Steak/ Lobster combo while she had the Camarones Gigantes. Everything was delicious. Will definitely return to try some of the other menu items (Enchiladas, Seafood, Salads/ Soups), and the Tres Leches Cake we had no more room for!!!"

The food is of excellent quality
and taste. The restaurant has a warm atmosphere and service. For this reason, La Casa del Caballo Restaurant is one of my favorites."
Dined on 1/25/2014
One of the best steakhouses in
Houston! The service was great and the steaks are grilled to perfection! I would definitely recommend La Casa Del Caballo to anyone looking for a good meal."
Dined on 1/22/2014
We were hesitant to try Mexican
fine dining but were very surprised with the experience. They start you off with olives and cheese which is a welcomed difference. I enjoyed the dark red tortilla soup especially when I added some of their spicy salsa. My wife and I both had the ribeye and enjoyed the unique flavor. I plan to return on a regular basis and try some of their other dishes. Next time I plan to sit at the bar to enjoy the restaurant from a different perspective."
Dined on 1/20/2014
Restaurant had great reviews, but
the food wasn't that great (steak overcooked), side dishes were forgotten until mid way thru dinner, and it is very pricy (which we expected). They were accommodating with regard to finding us a quiet spot, but mostly that depends on the tables around you, so they seated us in a corner. All in all a mediocre experience."
Dined on 1/18/2014
Quiet and tasteful place but wait
staff not qualified and kitchen, also. Waited for 30 minutes for a pork tenderloin - then 10 minutes more for undistinguised sides. Pork was good - not much more. Got part of the order wrong after long discussion..."
Dined on 1/18/2014
I've gotta say that after reading
all the other reviews, I was a little disappointed. The service was very slow and we weren't even sure who was actually waiting on our table as several people came by but we needed a couple of minutes to choose a wine and then had to ask for someone to come back so we could order it. The queso is different but very good - it was the highlight of the evening. We went with the waiter's advice on steak and ordered the sirloin for 4 to share but wish I had gotten the tenderloin instead as it was just okay- there was a lot of meat but it wasn't anything special. So all in after my first dinner here, it seems over-rated and overpriced. Doubt that I'll go back."
Dined on 1/18/2014
The food was great but the service
was outstanding. We went to celebrate our son's nanny's birthday and they went all out in making sure we were having a good time. Only one litle problem was that they didn't have the wine we wanted (twice) and settled for a third wine - which had a price tag of double the amount we wanted to spend, so after two bottles we spent way more than what we expected to spend in wine. But the great service made up for this problem."

This is one of those restaurants
you think will be hit or miss every time. It's in a location that's seen its share of failures, but I hope La Casa del Caballo is here to stay! Note I said you *think* will be hit or miss. Fact is, when we've gone, it's always been a hit! This latest visit was our first for lunch (trying their lunch special on a workday off between the holidays). When we've been for dinner, the deliciously large portions made us roll out of there and head straight home in a food coma. But lunch was just as delicious. With reasonable portion sizes, for the first time we were able to go about the rest of the day satisfyingly full. Service is outstanding. I hope they are getting bigger crowds and are around for a long time."

A unique style for serving
excellent steak;a melt in the mouth carniverous delight!"
Dined on 1/3/2014
We have a saying - "two trips,
first and last". Did not live up to any of the great reviews, in fact not even close. The service was awkward, the food was not worth the prices (really tasteless fish for instance), and believe other reviews regarding the greasy queso. It was kind of gross. The only thing good was it was relatively quiet, but that may be because it was not very busy."
Dined on 1/4/2014
The staff was friendly upon
arrival...we asked if there was seating upstairs, and the hostess remembered there was, and later mentioned a guitar player upstairs...We sat up there and started fine...the immediate presentation of an appetizer platter, olives, cheese and sauces was lovely...but it went downhill from there as far as service due to a party of 12 that came in with a crying baby. The food was average, we had to ask for silverware, more water., we asked for tortillas which came 25 minutes after... It was a bit of a dissapointing experience especially due to the fact that I had read soo much about this restaurant."

Took my parents from out of town.
We each ordered something different, steak, enchiladas and fish and all were excellent. Will be returning."

Would highly recommend."

Food was amazingly good. Great
steaks. Their specialty steak was perfect. The service was outstanding and friendly"
Dined on 12/27/2013
The steaks were perfectly cooked.
Every dish we tried was delicious. I'm still thinking about it- can't wait to go back."
