La Casa del CaballoHouston's Next Great SteakhouseI went with a group of buddies who love to eat. We ordered the Queso Fundido as an appetizer. Warning if you do not love melted cheese with tasty chorizo then you should not order this. I could have probably eaten just the queso by itself without the tortillas that come with it. For the main dish we ordered the famous Tapa de Lomo. Let me tell you this is one exquisite piece of meat. Of course the thing is huge which is why we ordered it b/c we are all red meat eating neanderthals but this cut of eat had beautiful marbling throughout which meant the meat was juicy and flavorful. We were impressed at how they were able to cook this large chunk meat and it was not overcooked or dry. They dont like to split dishes in the kitchen. wedge salad was excellent, large chunks of blue cheese and yummy avocado ranch dressing. Lobst bisq good too. Meats delicious, two of us had the filets, two split lamb chops, all cooked perfectly, very tender. Grilled veggies, Refritos, potatoes come with and were also very good. Ordered dessert (espresso flan, served with rice pudding, very good but small portion) and coffee and it took about 20 minutes to come. There are a lot of excellent steak places so not sure there is a reason to return here, esp. I know that it just opened 8 weeks ago and they have a few things to sort out, ie. drink menu, valet,advertising etc. We celebrated my husbands birthday with a group of 10 and everyone raved about their food. My husband and I are known to be food snobs so we were pleasantly surprised to stumble upon this local gem. We will definitely be going back for seconds. I had the 14 oz shoulder portion and my finace had the centercut beef tenderloin. Both were cooked to perfection and very tender and tasty. We each had a very delicious wedge salad which we could have split. It was big.
Wine list was adequate. They did not have my first choice on the list and we got the last bottle of my second choice which was very good and priced well.
The ambiance was good but not great and the noise level was very loud. When we arrived it was still light and not very crowded but noisy. However, it only came with 3 small corn tortillas to share between my husband and I. It should also be noted that since they are trying to stray away from your typical tex-mex vibe, there were no chips given beforehand. So basically we were left with a giant pan of melted cheese, and nothing to eat it with. I ordered the enchiladas con pollo, and my husband the brisket. The enchiladas come with 5 huge enchiladas and no sides, and my husbands brisket seemed to be boiled and lacking flavor. It was a bit mundane, but satisfied the appetite. We've talked about trying this new place and glad we did. I think they were a little short on staff because service was a little slow but our waiter was excellent working with us. The food was great! My rib eye was so tender and well-cooked. I couldn't believe how tender it was. The asparagus we ordered was fabulous! They grilled it with salt and pepper only, just like the steak....no butter and the flavor was great! I wanted to order a second plate of it. The decor is very cool too. We were all amazed by the 4lb steak that was cooked perfectly. We all agreed that the beans were the best we ever had. The wine was inexpensive and was complimented with a tasty selection of appetizers. The grilled vegetables were crisp, colorful, and not too spicy.
