Diner Reviews
  • "La Briciola looks unassuming from the outside, but inside it is warm and welcoming, with attentive (but not stuffy) service and a very sure hand in the kitchen. The food is excellent -- fresh ingredients, deliciously prepared and beautifully presented. Poised between downtown and the ballpark, it's possible to enjoy an early dinner, without feeling rushed, and still make it to the yard for the first pitch. Highly recommended! "

  • "Great dinner. We went before a Giant's baseball game on a Friday night. Will go again"

  • "I have been going here before or after Giants games for a few years, and I have never been disappointed. The staff is attentive, and they all make sure the experience is exceptional. The food is terrific, and I know that when I go back I am in for a treat. I love the polenta as an appetizer. No matter how the game turns out, I am in for a win at La Briciola!"

  • "Mediocre location. Really good food that tasted fresh. Some nice daily specials added to a good selection of apps, pasta, and meats. Restaurant is tastefully if minimally decorated. Wine list is average at best."

  • "My husband is Italian and this is one of the only Italian restaurants he really loves in the U.S. so far. Also, it's a total gem for the neighborhood, with reasonable prices, good quality, and authentic and pleasant ambience. Really worthwhile."

  • "I enjoyed the lunch we had at La Briciola. The grilled squid appetizer was fantastic! I definately would recommend to others as it was a nice, uncrowded location for a business lunch."

  • "Very nice food, great wine list. What a great place this is. You know when you're at the right Italian restaurant when there are lots of Italian guests. Quality of my meal was excellent, and the prices are very fair. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Four of us had dinner there last Friday evening. What a delightful surprise!!! Looking for a restaurant close to the theater we were going to. The food was yummy, great service (brought our own bottle of wine) but did try a Pinot Grigio, which was outstanding! Cesar salad was very good, Spinach salad good, Red Snapper excellent, Lasagna different than we've ever had before but again excellent! Dipping oil for your bread was outstanding----too full for dessert but was served lemoncello again perfecto! The service was great---someone always watching over you but unobtrusive. Not a large restaurant, which helps with the noise level. Definitely off the "beaten path" we'll be back!"

  • "My family (2 adults, 10yo, 7yo) had dinner at La Briciola. I was surprised to find a good Italian restaurant on 3rd street near the freeway in SOMA. The interior is very pleasant and tasteful. Our children were well treated by the staff. The food is more northern Italian in style. The polenta crostini appetizer (with tomatoes, portobello, and pate on 3 different pieces) and the burrata cheese (with a small salad and sopressata) were excellent. The Primi and Secondi portions were of good size. The handcut pasta with lamb ragu was excellent. The pork saltimbocca was a bit too salty but otherwise tasty. The only disappointment was the gnocchi which felt almost "flour" on the palate. The wine list was well selected to match the food."

  • "This is the second time I brought visitors to La Bricola. The first time it was quite laid back and casual, This time, on a Wednesda night, the restaurant was full and pretty noisy. There were several large groups and the atmosphere was lively. However that made it tough to have a dinner conversation. Not sure if this is the new normal for the restaurant. Oh yes, the food--very good and enjoyed by all. The waiters were fine and fairly attentive despite being busy."

  • "I wanted to love this place. The staff is warm and friendly. The service is excellent. The restaurant is quiet and cozy, and our table was a perfect set up for the 8 of us. But my entree, porcini tagliatelle was just ok. The other entree I tasted, seabass ravioli was also just ok. Given how great everything else was, I thought the food would be excellent. In hindsight, it's a good 'grab dinner before going to the Metreon' type of place and not really a special occasion type place."

  • "I was looking for an authentic Italian restaurant with good seafood, and found it in La Briciola. The location is a little off the beaten path, but well worth the walk from Union Square. The service was warm and attentive. The salmone affumicato (smoked salmon) was outstanding! Next came the pennette al granchio con la rucola (pasta with lobster), and it was similarly delicious. The final course was Tagliata di tonno al sesamo (tuna with sesame seeds) - of the three it was my least favorite; It was too heavily sauced for my taste, but my dining companion loved it. Dinner was topped off with their soufflé al cioccolato - a lovely dark chocolate (flourless?) cake that approached ganache in its texture; amazing!"

  • "It was very crowded but we got good service. I had a generic glass of red wine while waiting and it was not something I'd ever want to drink again. This is part of the reason for the three stars. The wine list, though, had good ones, and some reasonably priced. You would not go here for the ambience, of which there is really little, but for good Italian food in the neighborhood, it is definitely worth a try."

  • "Excellent food. Some of the best Italain I've every had. The only drawback, which is not the fault of the restaurant, is the noise level from the busy streets."

  • "We had a friend in from out of town and wanted a fun place that wasn't one of the usual suspects (North Beach, Fisherman's Wharf, Original Joe's). La Briciola fit the bill perfectly. Centrally located, great food, pleasant ambiance. My wife exclaimed that she had the "best" Ceasar Salad she had ever had. Strongly recommend La Briciola."

  • "I had the good fortune of meeting executive chef Gianluca Toschi a few years ago through an Italian colleague here on assignment from Milano. I work for an Italian company and every time I would take a visiting colleagues out for Italian food in SF they would scoff at me saying "this is not the food of my country". After meeting Gianluca and dining at his restaurant I can finally bring anyone to his place for a truly authentic Italian experience. Best food outside of Italy I've ever had!! You will not be disappointed!"

  • "This is the second time we have been to La Briciola and I must say we tried different items on the menu and it was fabulous. The food is fantastic and the wait staff is attentive and courteous. You cannot go wrong coming to this restaurant, it is a definite spot to take out of town guests and close friends and family. Both times we have gone we brought our own wine but they have an extensive wine list that would serve you well. The corkage fee is reasonable and they wasted no time opening the our bottle. This will not be the last time we come to this restaurant, truly a gem."

  • "We chose to eat at La Briciola after going to Cirque du Soliel because we could walk from AT&T park. I was also longing for a more intimate dining experience in SF -- smaller space, more warm and quiet, lower ceilings, table cloths, etc. La Bricioloa had that old world charm and the service was excellent. The food was good-- the pastas homemade and the sauces nice. We had a spinach ravioli, sea bass Ravioli, and our guests had fish--all with some type of red sauces. we exchanged tastes, it all tasted pretty similar maybe that's because none of us selected the meat dishes (they offered just a few and were out of the rabbit by 7pm) or to the various pasta sauces that included cream. I will try it again but diversify our order next time."

  • "Went with a group of 7 - Staff was attentive and gave an excellent wine recommendation - Primitivo. Four of us were vegetarians and the homemade pumpkin ravioli was wonderful. The Tagliatelleai porcini e tartufo had wonderful flavor although the pasta was a little too al dente for me - hence the 4 stars. Our friend from out of town loved the gnocchi and the roast chicken was perfectly done. We had 3 dessert all were fabulous - tiramisu, panna cotta and warm chocolate cake."

  • "We dined here with family visiting from out of town (and local family as well) before attending the Cirque du Soleil show at AT&T Park. The food was great, and the service also. The wait staff is quite friendly, accommodating, and engaging. It was quite convenient to the performance venue. A nice evening for us all around!"

  • "I met a tardy friend for lunch here. While I waited for her I was served bread with a delicious olive & olive oil tapenade dip. Maybe the waiting a pleasure. For lunch we shared the Linguini Cinque Terra and the Linguini Melanzana. The Cinque Terra was a pesto pasta with potatoes and greenbeans as would be served on the Cinque Terra. Their version was delicious and took me back to the little cliff-side restaurant in Monterosso where I first had the dish. The Melanzana was an eggplant and mushrooms in a tomato pased sauce. It was mild but very tasty. This was my first trip to this restaurant -- I picked it based on Open Table ratings -- but I'll definitely be back."

  • "First time at this place. We were looking to make a reservation for a group of 8 after a show at AT&T Park and few places offered a table at 10pm. We took a chance and were not disappointed....a warm reception from the owner, Allesandro and great food and great service!"

  • "La Briciola, which means "a crumb," gave us a great meal and warm, friendly and professional service. The food was wonderful, if heavy on the porcini and truffles, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. From start to finish, it was a delightful experience with an attentive but unobtrusive server and genial host. They also gave us complimentary icy limoncellos."

  • "The service was very good, chatty, and casual. The menu is divided into a daily menu, and then a more general regular menu. Second, there are my choices. Wine: 2010 Sangiovese La Carraia, Umbria, Italia: raspberry, cherry, and pepper, with balanced acidity, medium body, and moderate tannins...smooth, mild, and well-flavored. Orecchiette con salsiccia e rapini ear-shaped pasta~sausage~ broccolirabe~olive oil. The pasta was al dente, not sausage mild, the vege semi-crisp, and the sauce left plenty of room to taste the ingredients. Needless to say, I finished the plate. Rockfish (special), nicely sauced, semi-crisp veges, and very nice creamy mashed potatoes. Very well flavored and tender."

  • "La Briciola was everything I hoped it would be. We had a group of 6 for a reunion. The food here is just wonderful, and the wine list is put together with skill. There are great wines for reasonable prices, and the staff steers you right. The lamb ragout pasta dish is one of the best pasta dishes I have had. Great time and so glad we went."

  • "We had an early dinner before heading to a concert downtown and tried La Briciola. Our food was good, really tasty homemade pastas are probably the highlight. The only downside here is location, underneath I-80 in a pretty industrial part of SoMa. If you are willing to trek down to it, it's a great value and really nice folks who take care of you."

  • "We had some definite high points with our meal. The service was impeccable, the space was cozy and romantic, but the food was uneven. We love octopus and ordered it as an appetizer. Our waiter told us that not many people like octopus, but we do, so we gave it a try. Maybe he meant not many people like their octopus. It was pulpy and chewy. The waiter graciously replaced it with some tasty salmon carpaccio. I was disappointed that there were only three fresh pastas that our waiter steered us to. Why not make fresh orecchiette as well? Good wine, but no liquor license."

  • "Being a yankee (the people, not the sports team - go Sox) I've spent many an evening in Boston's North End. My favorite is the Daily Catch on Hanover Street. Seafood caught that day made into Italian meals. This place reminds me of the Daily Catch in that their seafood based meals were done very well - fresh and clean. Pasta was very good, too; thin and tasty, not too doughy. The ambiance is good and the noise level is reasonable. I had the burrata starter which was exceptional - buttery, flavorful and the portion was actually too big. A good starter to split for two. Service was slow. We waited for everything. But I will return."
