Dining at La Boite en Bois is always a pleasure. This cozy (tiny) place under a brownstone has been one of our favorites ever since we came upon it several years ago. Reservations are always needed. The food is great. We are always there for the pre-theater dinner before heading to nearby Lincoln Center. The Prix Fixe menu is quite good, and there are always specials. This time the special was a veal scaloppine with mushrooms - highly recommended. Service is friendly and efficient, with the only small issue sometimes being understanding their accents. We have always enjoyed dining here.

It is a tiny venue but cozy. The French cover songs to 70's music was enjoyable and not overly loud so diners could talk and be heard. Excellent food. The lamb stew and shrimp bisque was excellent, as was the sauce for the shrimp and scallops and bread pudding. It's one of the best pre-theatre choices for dinner in the Lincoln Center District. Prix Fixe pre-theatre is a bargain.

This brownstone establishment is very convenient to Lincoln Center. The service was excellent and the food quite good. However, the tables are so close together that conversation with your neighbors is inevitable, making a quit, romantic dinner impossible. The price fixed 3 course menu (only option available), while offering a reasonable selection, was a bit pricey at $48 and the mark- up on the wines also seemed a bit high, but then again it is NYC.

Our first time here, the service was excellent, the food wonderful, the ambiance delightful. We got there a few minutes early and by the time our food was served every table was full. The people are more than friendly, the dinner came quickly and hot ( the steak and fish were to die for ) , what more could you want. We will be back.

We ordered the pre-theatre menu. Each dish was delicious, one entrée was from the set menu and one was a special. The wine paired perfectly with both. Sorbet dessert of cassis and passion fruit was special. The service was attentive and timed just right.

We arrived on time for our reservation and had to wait, was told should have come later. No place to stand while waiting. Once we were seated things improved, food very good, service fine ambiance only ok. When I made the reservation should have been told to come later because of the Lincoln Center crowd.

This place is very small and if it is busy the tables are very close together. This might bother me in some restaurants but not here. I was seated so I could turn and look into the kitchen if I wanted. I loved watching the chef and others in the kitchen work. We ordered two cocktails that were wonderful and quite full. I had a smoked salmon and trout appetizer that was very good and a steak au poivre the was divine.

This was my second time to this restaurant. I had gone prior to renovations and had a great experience. I was bringing family from out of town and was a lite concerned that the experience wud be different after renovations. However, no need for the worry! The renovations must have been in the kitchen because the dining area remains the little wood box with great atmosphere, the staff were helpful, and the food remains fabulous.

Have been returning to La Boite en Bois for years and it never disappoints. The service is so caring and yet unobtrusive, the room is warm and cozy, the food is reliably good always with interesting specials. I've been here "pre-theatre" for dinner and it's always efficient without losing the personal touch; and this past time I came with a few old friends after the theatre crowd had left and it was delightful. The special salad (proscuitto, arugula, pears, parmesan) was fabulous and the seafood special (en papillotte) was cooked in a really lovely leek, wine sauce. I will continue to view this as my "go to" restaurant near Lincoln Center.

After reading the reviews we expected old style French food in a small restaurant that was somewhat cramped and noisy. The restaurant was crowded ,the service was ok but the food was not at all good. The squash soup was flavorless, and the veal was a poor cut if meat in a gloopy tasteless sauce. I would never go back there or recommend this place.

Latest of many visits to La Boite en Bois, one of our pre-theater choices for Lincoln Center. The pre-theater prix fixe is a decent deal. The restaurant is a little claustrophobic and drably decorated but they turn out solid French bistro style food and can get you in and out in time for the curtain. We had leeks and a ravioli special to start, then the chicken and salmon for entrees. All were quite good. With a halfbottle of Southern Rhone, dessert, coffee tax and tip, the total was around $70 pp, which is fair.

Like several old time restaurants we've tried recently, this one is resting on its laurels. I felt as though my coq au vin came out of the freezer & went into the microwave, and came out with a heavy undistinguished "gravy," not a lovely wine sauce that one associates with coq au vin. On top of that, the chicken was tough, which tells me it wasn't cooked that day. My husband says his food was not special, certainly not good enough to justify the prices. This goes on the "no more" list for us. Amie

We enjoyed ourselves with good food and service but.......Don't like the Mandatory pre-fix menu betwen 5-7:30PM. If i'm paying I don't want to be told how and what i have to eat. I'm not a dessert eater nor was one of my guests--but guess what? We still had to pay for the desserts we didn't have due to the horrible, mandatory pre-fix menu. All else is good.

At a friend's recommendation, my husband and I ate here after a matinee performance at nearby Lincoln Center. We opted to eat after the show for an early dinner so we could enjoy the prix fixe 3-course menu. The restaurant was happy to accommodate our early arrival at 4:30, a good thing, as they filled up quickly. The house-smoked trout and salmon appetizer with cucumber salad was delicious, and serving was ample. Hubby had the soup du jour, a velvety, mild pumpkin bisque. We both enjoyed the monkfish entree, which was was so flavorful. Bourbon raisin bread pudding for dessert was incredible! Service was seamless. The group of gents worked together to ensure prompt attention, delivery, and follow up. Would highly recommend!
