Diner Reviews
  • "Delicious real French food. Always constantly good."

  • "The atmosphere has changed since the renovation which eliminated the authentic French feel and substituted a bland general restaurant quality. Also, the service at brunch on Saturday was lackluster despite an almost empty restaurant. No one checked our orders, no one offered another glass of wine, no one offered more coffee. They did refill the water."

  • "Excellent choice for pre-theater dinner. Service and food were very good. Even though it was quite busy - staff was very attentive! Should make reservation as it is a smaller venue."

  • "Always enjoy our dinners here. This time we came pretty early in the evening and the restaurant was quiet as it had just opened for dinner. When it's full it can get noisy and it's a small space but it's worth it. The food is fresh and nicely prepared, the service is friendly and available, the house wines are great but there's a good sized wine list and the cocktails and hard liquor are good as well. They take their time with food preparation and you never feel rushed in spite of the small space. Their pre-theater meal is timely. The prices are reasonable and I would say they are actually a little low for Manhattan especially for a place so close to Lincoln Center."

  • "My partner had the seafood stew, the house special Boîte en Bois, and it was excellent. I had the duck with cranberry sauce, and thought it mediocre. I have been here before and was very favorably impressed in every category, so this was a bit of a letdown. The service was excellent and ambiance superior with a somewhat high noise level, but a very pleasant place to be. Next time I will order something else."

  • "Fine spot for lunch and dinner before movie, play, concert in Lincoln Center area. Downside is that place is cramped."

  • "Honestly as good or better than the most expensive French restaurant in NYC. Consistently wonderful food, service. Gracious."

  • "Great food, great service, wonderful neighborhood place--we just keep coming back!"

  • "A small, pleasant French restaurant with moderate prices---excellent for a Lincoln Center matinee or evening."

  • "This has long been one of my favorites. Its location in the Lincoln Center area makes it a valuable find. The food is always good and the service pleasant and prompt."

  • "We've been eating at this French establishment for over 30 years. It's our go-to place for birthdays, anniversaries, Valentines Day (special menu) and Christmas Eve. While not a Michelin 3-star designate, it's still very good."

  • "I love this restaurant, have been coming here pre-theater for years. I recently stopped eating dairy though, since it upsets my stomach and so a French restaurant is not really the best choice. They said that they would be able to make what I ordered without any dairy, but I had a lot of bloating later in the evening, so I think that they may have missed something. But if you don't have intolerance to certain foods, this place is an absolute gem. Charming staff and very tasty food."

  • "We found la Boite en Bois while looking for a good intimate restaurant near Lincoln Center. What we found was that and more. Unlike the food factories you'd normally find, the meals are exquisitely prepared and served by a staff of excellent servers. And for the quality of food, the price is more than reasonable. A+++"

  • "We had the prix-fixe pre-theater menu; our snails were delightful, my dining partner enjoyed her coquille St. Jacques, and the poached salmon with two three different mini salads was a wonderful array of flavors and incredibly fresh vegetables. Even the cucumbers which I'm not a fan of were gobbled up due to the delightfully-tangy dressing! The sorbets of the day were a nice finishing complement, summery kiwi and apricot. My dining partner's chocolate mousse was rich and full of dark cocoa flavor. My only strike, really, was that the bill came a little slow for trying to get to the theatre at 7:30. The house was full, so I would suggest an early reservation to alleviate this problem."

  • "I've been there many times; the food and service never failed to impress me. Excellent reasonably priced pre-theater menu. Just wish the tables were more spread out. They need a bigger space."

  • "Used to love this restaurant but after two phone calls to be sure that we would have the dinner of rack of lamb that we love, we were very disappointed that the restaurant didn't follow through on their promise of serving us rack of lamb. Even though we told the Staff and management that we were there to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary, they weren't concerned or apologetic They didn't even offer a drink or coffee Steak that we had to order instead of the rack of lamb was tough and tasteless. It was a very disappointing and expensive meal."

  • "Cab issues but called and the hostess graciously held table. Pre-theatre prix fixe 3 course meal (Lincoln Ctr 3 blocks N). Everything perfectly cooked with attention to the presentation and melding of flavors. Had Endive salad, Salmon and Chocolate Mousse, Asparagus Soup, Cod and Bread Pudding. All delicious and perfectly prepared. Service was smooth, quick but no rush. Space long, narrow and tight so couples sit across with other couples close on either side in a row of small tables that are pulled out for the lady to be seated. A few four tops. Waiters superb in tight space. Warm, comfortable, family feel with a focus on food and service--not at all pretentious. Would happily eat here every week but from Texas. Plan to return."

  • "La Boite is a great find for authentic French cooking. One of our guests is a real Francophile and she was quite impressed with the liver. The room is charming but tight so be prepared for an intimate dining experience with others who are not in your own party! The help were attentive and very accommodating, allowing us to order off the regular menu instead of the prix fixe. The chocolate mousse was perfect for two to share."

  • "we have always enjoyed our meals here. Lunch is usually very pleasant but was diminished in pleasure this time by a loud table next to us."

  • "Lovely, small restaurant with a pleasing menu in easy walking distance to Lincoln Center without the mania of Broadway eateries. Service was most efficient and pleasant; tasty and nicely plated food. Prices were quite reasonable for the area. A touch of France minus the affectation, just off Columbus Avenue."

  • "Wanted to try something different when going to Lincoln Center, and found La Boite en Bois a few blocks away. The food was excellent! Restaurant is very small, but the waiters seem to have an efficient system. Tables are close so you may wind up having a conversation with your neighbors. We did...and met a wonderful couple from NJ. All around great experience. Try the sausage and lentils appetizer!"

  • "I dined here two years ago and had a great experience, unfortunately not so this time. The service was awkward with a waiter bumping me and several hitting my chair during service. This is unacceptable. Something was spilled on my clutch during service. The food was not as good as I recalled. Overall a somewhat disappointing experience."

  • " A gem near Lincoln Center. Let's not tell too many about this neighborhood find because we always want at table before or after a performance. A charm of which there are few remaining in NYC,"
    Dined on 6/5/2014
  • "too much use of sauces on entrees which did not help for the taste of the main dish"

  • "Service was great, waitstaff friendly, helpful and did not rush our food. We ordered the French Onion soup and Seafood Crepe for apps, the crape was great..the soup was served way to HOT, like scalding HOT underneath the very yummy guyare cheese top. Soup was terrific after it cooled down which took awhile. Entrees were the strip steak and lamb stew. The steak was ordered medium but came out more like done but it was very good as well, so were the frites and veggies it came with. The stew was again served on the HOT side. It was good but kinda fatty in the meat. It needed to be trimmed a bit more. Overall it was very good though. This restaurant was a bit overpriced but not so I would not go back. "

  • "Food is mediocre at best and before shows they force you to have prix fixe menu."

  • "If you plan to go for any event at Lincoln Center at night this is the place to eat. The facility is small so the reservation is a must. Be prepared to spend a little more than expected but in return you will get excellent food ( many choice of fish and superb, not to be missed duck.) French baguette absolutely outstanding, dessert not to be missed even if you do not indulge in sweets. "

  • "If you are looking for some traditional country French food, La Boite en Bois has it. The food is very good, portions are very generous and the service is very nice. This is not a place for trendy food, but for good, straightforward eating. "

  • "Read good reviews and figured we'd give it a try after Sun 3PM ballet. Cute restaurant in the lower level of a brownstone. Small restaurant w/very close together tables(only negative). Friendly service. Delicious bread. We shared 2 appys-pate and smoked salmon & trout. Both were excellent. I had mussles for a main and DH had roast chx. We enjoyed these also. Too stuffed for dessert but did see other ordering dessert and they looked very appetizing. We dont usually drink ex coffee, and we thought the bill was very reasonable for what we ate. When we attend the ballet again, we definately will eat here"

  • "Nothing novel or extraordinary, just old-school French competently prepared, reasonably priced, reliable - a few steps from Lincoln Center and a fine accompaniment to an afternoon or evening of opera, ballet, symphony, or whatever. It's kind of quaint in this age of digital point-of-sale systems to be presented with a hand-written check, but it fits perfectly with the style of food, the decor, and the overall absence of pretension."
