Diner Reviews
  • "My visit to La Boîte en Bois was exceptional!! Fantastic food and wine. The pre fixed dinner menu is a great deal. I highly recommend this place! Close to Lincoln Center, too."

  • "Tables very close together but conviviable. Classic style food preparations -- in a good way."

  • "We were a party of 7 around a cozy, intimate round table after a concert, and we could converse without struggling to hear one another. The proprietor was accommodating though we got out of the concert a bit late, arriving 20 minutes before the kitchen closes, ten minutes after our booking. All of us enjoyed our choices of courses. I hope to return when next in NYC. Both red wines (California and Italian) we're very good and fairly priced."

  • "I have been going to La Boite en Bois for years and it never ceases to impress. What they do they do well and I have never had a bad meal there. The staff is friendly and courteous and the ambiance is delightful. I highly recommend this place."

  • "We won't be returning to La Boite en Bois (the wooden box). We made reservations there because aside from their pre-theatre prix fixed menu (which included three courses), we liked their regular dinner menu. We did not want appetizers or desserts. Once there, we found only the prix fixed available at $48. Their dinner menu is not available until 7:30. When we checked different sites about the restaurant, it did not show this restriction. So, it doubled our cost with food we did not want. The escargot was adequate but overly salted. The pork special was dry. My calves liver was tender but swimming in sauce and overdone, and the bread pudding that three of us had was the worst we'd ever eaten: too sweet and dry. The service was quite good."

  • "I guess what really made me so happy was how quiet it was. It was a latish lunch and there were one or two other parties there, so our group of three could have a real conversation. Different story for their claim-to-fame pre-theater prix fixe, I'm sure. But it's a small space and I think even when full it feels relatively quiet, and certainly intimate. We've had dinner there before, and liked it. We found it quite vegetarian-friendly, for a French restaurant. On this occasion, we all three had the day's vegetarian potato-leek soup and salade nicoise. They were good. My "classic creme brulee" dessert was just that: perfect, no surprises."

  • "It is a tight squeeze but a great menu for the lincoln center crowd."

  • "I've had great French food before and I know what great French food tastes like. This was average food and somewhat disappointing. For the prices they charge they should provide higher quality dishes. The space is small and very crowded. If you don't like to rub elbows with the next table, this is not for you."

  • "Tables are very crammed in with a line of 5 our 6 tables for 2 just 2 inches apart. Somewhat disorganised throughout the meal. We were asked if we'd been told about the specials at least 5 times by all the waiting staff. Food reasonable but I'm always disappointed when my duck dish has the same nondescript vegetables as my wife's fish dish."

  • "Not only is this a great restaurant foodwise, it is terrifically located to Lincoln Center and provides an early dinner menu to accommodate those attending theater functions."
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "We went for the pre-theater menu--many choices and wonderful to have well prepared and delicious traditional French food. Except for being right next to your neighbor, overall the experience was very good. l"

  • "Excellent quality food at reasonable prices for NYC."

  • "This is our favorite spot near Lincoln Center, serving great bistro style dishes in a cute, but very small space. The crowds, and noise, get pretty severe before a performance. Raul is a charming host and the food is certainly worth the effort!"

  • "La Boite en Bois is very authentic French. If you've ever spent time in France and are craving "real" French food and ambiance, I highly recommend a visit to La Boite en Bois. Paté and Endive/Beet Arugula salad to start and the Niçoise Cod followed by an incredible dessert of frozen hazelnut chocolate mousse was all amazing. The bottle of white that our waiter paired with the meal helped everything flow together perfectly. Merci beaucoup!"

  • "Charming and authentic. The escargot were excellent!"

  • "I found this restaurant online. I wanted to take my 14 year old daughter to a French restaurant before Lincoln Center as she is studying French in school. The reviews were excellent, the convenience seemed perfect for a pre-theater dinner, and the menu looked very good. Well, the experience exceeded my hopes! The prix fixe menu (appetizer, entree and dessert, all for $48) offers many choices as well as nightly specials. Our meals were delicious!! We were greeted at the door immediately, out table was ready right at our reservation time, and the food was served piping hot and timely, but not rushed. It is small, so be prepared to sit very close to other diners. But we didn't mind a bit. Service was outstanding. 5 minute walk to LC! 5 stars!"

  • "Met some friends at La Boite en Bois for dinner on Saturday night. Small, intimate atmosphere. Felt like we were in a French Bistro. Food was great. Everyone seemed very happy with their appetizer and entree. No complaints. Service was very good. We will return."

  • "Just about the most crowded restaurant I have ever been in. They need to take tables out rather than trying to squeeze every last penny out of their space by cramming tables so closely together that you feel like you are eating with a bunch of strangers."

  • "I had the roast duck and my wife had a beef dish. Both were terrific, and the tranquil setting enhanced our enjoyment of the meal. This was out third visit to this restaurant and I look forward to going there again."

  • "Great experience before theater or opera. Wish some of the wait staff were a little less pretentious. Most were fine but one was a bit too 'French' in the bad way!"

  • "Ideal for one or 2 couples seeking a warm bistro-like atmosphere"

  • "We have been coming for about 20 years. Although the food and service is about the same it no longer is the value it once was. There are now more interesting in the Lincoln Center area. Raising prices no longer makes it a worthwhile dining experience for just good food, rushed service at very cramped tables."

  • "Quaint basement bistro with an expansive/expensive wine list. Servers worked in tandem and were very attentive however, could've done without the bartender constantly blowing their nose as we ate."

  • "We discovered La Boite en Bois last year and have returned when we come into the city. The service is exemplary and the food delicious, and interesting selection of wines. The pre-show menu is a wonderful value and the friendly staff very considerate to see that you are cared for and on you way in plenty of time for your show. If attending Lincoln Center, you will have only a few blocks, maybe a five minute walk. Do reserve as La Boite will fill up by 6pm."

  • "Loved finding this place. The food is well above average, well prepared and seasoned, the restaurant is charming and un-renovated so it really feels like it's been in the neighborhood for a while, and the service was solicitous but not intrusive. Finally, while the place is small, you don't feel like you're on top of your neighbors. My justification for a 5 star overall and only 4 stars in the individual categories is that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. And it's only one express stop away, so we'll be back."

  • "I have been to this restaurant a few times and opted to try it again. In essence, the entire experience was mediocre and frustrating. The service was dreadful. We had to almost scream at the waiter to get recognized, to get bread, toget a drink. We had two fish preparations which had the exact same sauce--salmon and trout almondine. The only difference was the the trout had some alonde added to it. The dessert--classic cream brûlée, was good but more like flan than brûlée. The restaurant is not inexpensive and isvery disappointing for the money."

  • "My niece and I came here before seeing a French film at Lincoln Center....sort of a day in Paris in New York. We went off hours so it was empty but the waitress (who had arrived from Paris only two months ago) was wonderful and the food was quite good. Not a huge menu but enough to choose from even if you aren't adventurous."

  • "I'm not even French and I cooked the food. It was Hot. I mean as soon as it was cooked we were eating. Not like other restaurants where you have to wait for the food. Granted my daughter and I went when in the afternoon. The waiter said at night gets crowded, so be ready. I will definitely be going back."

  • "Lovely restaurant but too many tables in a small spot"

  • "We had a wonderful brunch/lunch before 3pm concert at Avery Fischer Hall. Beginning with a lovely Kir Royale, we had delicious poached eggs served with excellent baguette, flakey puff pastry for the Benedict , and Salmon Benedict with smoked salmon prepared in house that was delightfully smokey in flavor with a texture much like buttery sushi, both served with a tangy Hollandaise sauce that was creamy and light. The eggs were accompanied by a delicious wedge of potato gratin that was crispy on the outside and moist and tasty inside. Delicious, simple french fare, in a charming little space."

  • "I've been coming here for many years, mostly pre-theater dining. The food is always satisfying and the service prompt. Be aware that it is a tiny establishment so the seating will be crowded and the noise level matching. The owner is attentive to their guests' needs to make curtain time @ Lincoln Ctr and we've never been late."

  • "My Brother and I dine here when we have tickets for an evening at Lincoln Center. It is as if we have stepped into France the minute we go down the front steps to the entrance. A tiny gem that would be most difficult to replicate for the wonderful food. The mushroom ravioli in cognac sauce is exceptional. Every dish is perfect. No matter what you order, you will not be disappointed. Try the sorbets. Priceless."

  • "Whenever we are attending an event near Lincoln Center, we ALWAYS book this great little restaurant. Food is divine and the service is very professional."

  • "My husband and I have been going here for years and have never been disappointed. The beets, endive, and goat cheese salad is delicious and is dressed lightly. I love the duck, and liver and onions entrees. My daughter, who is pregnant, was able to eat the chicken entree without upsetting her delicate stomach. My favorite dessert is the hazelnut praline mousse, which is sublime. The portions are moderate in size, the service unobtrusive. If you are looking for trendy food with ingredients made of foam, this not your place. Le Boite en Bois serves excellently prepared traditional French food in the Lincoln Center area."
