A word from La Boca
Opened in 2006 by Chef/Owner James Campbell Caruso (three-time James Beard Award Nominee), La Boca is an intimate Spanish tapas restaurant in the heart of downtown Santa Fe. Influenced by his travels in Spain, Chef James cultivates synergies of authentic Spanish ingredients to create dishes both traditional and modern. Dishes such as thinly sliced tuna drizzled with blood orange aioli and topped with kalamata olives and smoked sea salt create a constellation of different flavors in every bite.

With the feel of a lively European wine bar, La Boca also features an extensive selection of carefully chosen mediterranean and South American wines. Knowledgeable and animated staff graciously guide customers to the perfect wine or sherry to complement their meals.

La Boca is a proud participant in the Santa Fe Farm to Restaurant program.

Please note: Because seating at La Boca is limited, reservations for parties over 4 must contact the restaurant

The food was varied, tasty and well prepared. The waiter was very attentive and the atmosphere was quiet with a lovely view of the period buildings across the tree-lined street. And the music was a delight. However, it was very pricey. I am sure if we had ordered more judiciously without the added cost of two drinks and a capaccino, it would have been less than $100. However, it was considerably more. So La Boca is highly recommended for a special occasion where price is not an issue.

La Boca is always at the top of our dining spots for our annual trip to Santa Fe. The online reservation worked out perfectly, last year we were disappointed, it was a busy night and we couldn't get in. Last week the waiter was all ready for us, a great table right in front of the guitar player…perfect. Loved the eggplant with Manchego cheese and saffron honey, it was devine. See you next year!

Informal but instantly appealing space with a friendly, knowledgeable and very foodie staff; everything is small plates, nothing ordinary, always a little unusual but totally delicious; ask the waitstaff for details or explanations; slightly offbeat, well priced wine list by the glass and bottle; totally unfancy, but comfortable; foodie guests, modest noise, guests and waitstaff all happy; you will leave, happy, well-fed, remembering flavors and discoveries, possibly having chatted with foodies at a neighboring table, trying to figure out how soon you can get back!

We were looking forward to celebrating my birthday at La Boca and did have a satisfying meal. However, we also had a public television discount card that gave us $16 off a menu 'item' when another 'item' was purchased. We both had entrees instead of smaller, tapas-type dishes. What the waitress told us was unclear, recommending we save the card for another day. However, we just thought she suggested we get better value another time, not that the card would not qualify for the discount. We learned otherwise when the check arrived. We challenged the meaning of the offer, and she did talk with the manager who gave us $12 off instead of the full $16.

We had a fabulous meal! Jade our waitress was excellent, explained the tapas menu very well and was fabulous in finding a wine for each of us. I had a very excellent wine and she gave me a slip of paper with the name for my future shopping excursions. The bartender brought us one of our tapas plates and when my friend explained that the meat was too rare as it was ordered medium, he GRABBED THE PLATE, flounted it under her nose and left with it without one single word to any of us. He returned it later with the request corrected but again not a word and absolutely no concern for us. Unfortunately, I have met this man before when he was rude to an elderly woman in my company. He should NOT BE WORKING at this wonderful venue.

La Boca's food and wine is so authentic and fresh that my husband and I go out of our way on road trips to make sure we eat there. Reservations are a must, as the restaurant is small. The staff is friendly and service is paced as you like it. We usually order the special tapas of the day and this time we enjoyed the pig cheeks which were moist and tender. The padron peppers are always a must. The semifreddo was a perfect ending to our meal. The wine list has a very wide selection of highly rated wines.

That includes those I had in Spain, though I probably didn't go to the best restaurants threre. Food is delightful, subtle mix of flavors and textures. Fish stew, mariscopa, was a special dish when we went. Tender calimari, shrimp with flavor (!), mussels, scallops and the best tomato-based broth I've ever tasted. Very sophisticated version of a previously humble stew. Seating was a little tight. Table a bit small to hold all the dishes. But the food makes any inconvenience trivial. We will return.

I have lived in Spain and have also eaten in many Spanish and tapas restaurants outside of Spain. La Boca is neither a nod to the traditional tapas or pintxos of Spain, nor is it even in line with the ubiquitous "small plates" phenomenon of most large U.S. cities. No Spanish "standards" (jamon serrano, tortilla espanola, calamar en su tinto) can be found here. But neither are there tasty variations on those standards. Instead, it seems that the menu consisted of ill-conceived combinations of random ingredients found at the farmer's market with little regard to how well they play together: melon cubes with chopped kalamata olives (??), fried jamon, feta, and ... mint? Spend your hard-earned dollars elsewhere. SF does not lack for good food.

Overall, the experience was good. However, the service at our table was very slow. Our waitress was either new or inattentive. Delivery of wine and food was delayed. I had to cancel my last order of wine, since she did not deliver it until I had finished my meal. All she said was "sorry". Also, there are too many things on a small table. Extra plates, etc. and it becomes difficult to find places to put things when eating.

I tried the shrimp ceviche special this time and it was fab! Love the desserts as well--the pots de crème, crema catalana as well as the almond cake. I read about this restaurant before traveling to Santa Fe. We tried to get in for dinner, but it was booked. So we tried the next day for lunch. Success! Great restaurant. We were greeted by the bartender (who was originally from Chicago) and he was so friendly and helpful. I had a delicious glass of sherry, which I never see on menus. The lunch was delicious. We had a few tapas, sandwiches and salads. The salads were beautiful as well as delicious. My friend, who is a vegetarian, was thrilled with her sandwich. And our meat lovers were as pleased with their entrees. Be sure to visit this tiny little gem of a restaurant if you are in Santa Fe. If I lived there, this would be my "go to".

What a fabulous find! The open table photo with linen table cloths is misleading. Tables were bare wood about one foot away from each neighboring table. It's a tiny, packed restaurant with good service and absolutely delicious food. Loved the interesting concept of pairing different sherries with each plate. Such a unique concept. Each of the three sherries we tried were completely different: cold white, room temperature red and oak colored dessert. Anchovies were beautiful and superb and the stems of the artichokes with goat cheese were surprisingly meaty and delicious. There is something for everyone on this menu. Don't miss this tapas restaurant in Santa Fe...just a block from the plaza.

We ordered a bottle of wine, 2 vegetable tapas (artichokes with goat cheese and fried brussels sprouts) and 2 entree tapas (crab cakes with scallops and costillas - ribs). We received the first 2 tapas and then after 30+ minutes, our waitress brought us the dessert menu. We reminded our waitress we had never received our last two tapas. She apologized and brought them out in another 10 minutes or so. She said they would be "comped." When we got our bill, we were not charged for those two items but she had added $20 to the alcohol to make up for it. Again she apologized and removed those added charges. She blamed the computers system once and her manager the second time. It put a damper on an otherwise delicious meal.
