A word from La Boca
Opened in 2006 by Chef/Owner James Campbell Caruso (three-time James Beard Award Nominee), La Boca is an intimate Spanish tapas restaurant in the heart of downtown Santa Fe. Influenced by his travels in Spain, Chef James cultivates synergies of authentic Spanish ingredients to create dishes both traditional and modern. Dishes such as thinly sliced tuna drizzled with blood orange aioli and topped with kalamata olives and smoked sea salt create a constellation of different flavors in every bite.

With the feel of a lively European wine bar, La Boca also features an extensive selection of carefully chosen mediterranean and South American wines. Knowledgeable and animated staff graciously guide customers to the perfect wine or sherry to complement their meals.

La Boca is a proud participant in the Santa Fe Farm to Restaurant program.

Please note: Because seating at La Boca is limited, reservations for parties over 4 must contact the restaurant

We were very pleased with our experience at La Boca. They serve a tapas menu which is very tastefully done, very fresh, very good flavors. When we go to a tapas restaurant we ask the wait person to take over choices. Maria did a superb job. Perfect blend of flavors, amount and textures. Price was upper mid range but for our special occasion we were pleased. I would not recommend if you want an quiet romantic atmosphere.

We had dinner. A bit noisy for a small place, we've been in the separate cantina which is a bit better. The food is excellent, although you have to try and see what's to your taste. For example I liked the blood sausage, my wife not. It came in a delicious, dark sauce with dates and a small piece of grilled pineapple. The fideos negros, made with squid ink, and served with shrimp and mussels were very good, get extra bread to sop up the broth. A spicy shrimp and garlic were very spicy, too much so for my wife and she normally eats pretty spicy. So we added the beet salad with goat cheese and greens. Glad we did as that was another highlight dish. Will be back again, although will hit the cantina next time

The patatas bravas, bruschetta, tapas trio, morcella, all have us coming back time and time again. The food is always amazing, the service is always attentive and the ambiance is so nice. We love La Boca and the staff always treat us well. We love the energy of the restaurant and all of that combined has this as our favorite restaurants in Santa Fe (and we eat out alot). Chef James does a great job training his staff and we will be back.

A friend recommended. Never had experienced a Tapas style menu before so this was our introduction. The hardest thing was deciding what to choose! we selected 4 Tapas items plus two entrée' dishes. More than enough. Very different wine selection so our server assisted in recommendations. Very busy place so you need reservations

This is a find. The tapas are beautifully presented and it is clear that fresh ingredients are used. The food tastes are wonderful. My friend had his first octopus and loved it combined with pork cheeks. The only dish not up to par was the chicken. I highly recommend this as one of the best if not the best eatery in Santa Fe.

Delicious! This was our 4th trip to this bustling small plate restaurant. We visited on a Friday evening. Our favs: grilled artichokes with feta; ensalada de betabeles; brussels sprouts. Watch out for gambas al ajillo (shrimp & chilies)-- very flavorful and yummy, but over the top spicy for our taste.

The food in general was okay and the service was good. We ordered the tapas trio, the ensalada de betabeles, the brussel sprouts, and the kale salad with chickpeas. The beet salad was especially good, with nicely cooked beet slices sandwiching a mild goat cheese. My major complaint was the over-frying and over-salting. The brussel sprouts were very fried and salty, as were the chickpeas in the kale salad. The flatbread slices that came with the tapas trio were also fried and overly salty.

Our dinner at La Boca was incredible from the recommended glass of wine to start through the entire meal. Each course was better than the prior one! My husband and I dined on a Friday night on the early side, so the place wasn't quite full yet which made the ambiance very quiet and romantic. Our server perfectly timed everything, and every dish was perfect - including the absolutely delicious bread with olive oil. The kale salad with the fried garbanzos, garlic and lemon vinaigrette was delicious, as was every dish that we ordered. We will be going back and make every effort to save room for dessert!

We arrived before our reserved time but were promptly seated in the small but charming dining area. The staff was attentive and the waiter was very helpful as this was our first experience at La Boca. The seating was close, which is not so bad as it allows you to view the food at the next table and hear their review of it - definitely intimate. I recommend arriving early or making reservations for an earlier time because there was a line waiting by the time we were ready to leave.

We were visiting Santa Fe and a friend who visited last month told us that we had to go to La Boca. We made reservations (which is key) but showed up 20 minutes early. The host apologized that he did not have a table ready yet and the bar area was full. Instead, of having us wait outside, he went across the street to another restaurant and set it up so that we could have a table and some wine at this restaurant while we waited. When our table was ready, he came across the street to get us. What excellent service! The food at La Boca was superb. We are from Chicago and have eaten at excellent tapas places before but La Boca's variety and tastiness was far superior. We wish La Boca would come North to the Windy City.

We were able to order seafood paella, which is not on the menu (traditional paella is on the menu). It arrived with shrimp, mussels and calamari. The seafood was perfectly cooked and the rice had a smoky flavor which we loved. I had asked if we could be seated in a quieter area, and even though the restaurant is only one room, they tried as best they could to accommodate us, which I greatly appreciate. Service was excellent. A wonderful experience, highly recommended.

I travel a lot in Spain, and given the chef's reputation, I was excited to eat at La Boca. However, I came away disappointed. The food was in general clumsily prepared, out of balance, and over-sauced. For example, in the morcilla (blood sausage) dish I had, you couldn't taste the morcilla at all because it was completely overwhelmed by the sweet, thick, heavy sauce with dates and pineapple. In the gambas al ajillo, the sauce was fine, but the shrimp were overcooked and mealy. The wine list is short on the many less expensive bottles of good Spanish wine that are available. The restaurant's narrow room is packed with tables resulting in a crowded, noisy ambience. I've had much better Spanish food in other US cities. I won't be back.

La Boca's tapas tap into tradition but with a modern twist. Everything from the tapas to the paella to the desserts was fantastic. A couple at the table beside ours commented that the paella was better than anything they had on a recent trip to Barcelona and I believe it. Although the service was not terribly friendly, it was efficient and the wonderful food coming out of the kitchen more than overcame any slight flaws with the service. This is a really special place and I look forward to returning.

The food was varied, tasty and well prepared. The waiter was very attentive and the atmosphere was quiet with a lovely view of the period buildings across the tree-lined street. And the music was a delight. However, it was very pricey. I am sure if we had ordered more judiciously without the added cost of two drinks and a capaccino, it would have been less than $100. However, it was considerably more. So La Boca is highly recommended for a special occasion where price is not an issue.

If, like us, you enjoy tapas-style dining, tasting small portions of a wide range of tastes and flavors, this is a great place for it. We ordered 7 or 8 dishes (split between two of us), and enjoyed them all, but especially memorable were the Tacos de La Boca (shrimp-chorizo tacos), the grilled artichokes, and the gambas fritas. The small venue is crowded and noisy, and thus energetic, if that's what you're after. It's all about the food, which was superb.

The online reservation worked out perfectly, last year we were disappointed, it was a busy night and we couldn't get in.
