Diner Reviews
  • "There's a nice selection of good quality reasonably priced wine that accentuates a menu that is eclectic with a hint of traditionalism for the less-adventuresome in your party. We had a duck appetizer and some wonderful bruschetta to start. The table ordered entrees that had striped bass, a real treat, scallops, lobster lasagna, and the osso buco. All were well prepared and tasty. A comfortable, friendly restaurant with well-done un ordinary dishes and a wonderful staff."

  • "On a recent Friday evening two couples who were married 46 years ago this past Sunday celebrated their anniversaries at L May Eatery. The reservation was on their computer and they had reserved a very nice window table for us. The server brought complimentary champagne, took our photo, and then left us to reminisce... We had a very nice salad and the entrees were also excellent. I only wish I'd saved all my calories for the caramel cake on the dessert tray. A taste was not enough!"

  • "If your looking for a wonderful dining experience LMay has it all! It has heart and soul in its food and service. This is our go to place to eat when we have family and friends in town and when we want a nice meal with friends at the end of a busy week. We never have a bad experience or bad food, we are happy with everything!"

  • "I am always happy with my experience at L. May. The menu is interesting and diverse. I think the food is prepared from high quality ingredients, and the flavors are consistently excellent. The bar offers interesting choices as well, with homemade ginger ale among the unique offerings. The desserts are homemade and scrumptious. The staff is pleasant and usually they have experienced much of the menu themselves, so they can speak knowledgeably about the food. Nice people, friendly atmosphere, excellent food, reasonable prices; it's all good!"

  • "I love this place...always great food and prompt, smiley service. The cocktail and wine menu is diverse and have a little something for every taste. Highly recommend! I do wish the bar area were larger...have a reservation because it's not much of a waiting area on pretty much any night."

  • "End of Jan. So odd that the food could be both so good and so bad. Start with the bread and salad. The 2 pieces of bread came with a pimento butter which is nowhere as good as a pimento spread or pimento cheese spread - if anything it was very odd tasting. The salad for 2 came in a small bowl and barely large enough for one let alone 2. My husband's tuna was cooked perfectly but had tasteless sides. My shrimp was cooked perfectly but the cream cheese ravioli (cooked perfectly) was tasteless as well as the sauce made with roasted butternut squash (the tiny bits of squash were tasty but none of the flavor from the squash was in the ravioli sauce.) I would not recommend this restaurant - we have found much better in Dubuque previously."

  • "It's hard to improve on perfect, but they do it by reinventing the food selections every time. Interesting new chef specials sprinkled in with old favorites. Always good service, attentive but not intrusive. Love this place."

  • "This is our favorite restaurant in Dubuque! It has become "our" restaurant for special occasions certainly as well as any time we just want a great meal. L May has a very intimate atmosphere, an ample selection at the bar and a menu that is adventurous at times without being pretentious. Our meals manage to be very sophisticated and tasteful while not having its nose in the air. The wait staff is attentive and knowledgable yet unintrusive. Big kudos there! The bar is well stocked and the bartenders, Tammi in particular, always have a fun twist on an old drink, or something completely new and exciting! We've been here several times and have yet to have a sub par experience! L May always comes through with an exemplary dining experience!"

  • "The young male bartender there makes just about the best martini I've ever had. The wine list is plenty large enough, and the staff are knowledgable about the selections. Service is exactly right - prompt and attentive without being intrusive. They are capable of and freely make excellent suggestions not only about wine / beverage pairings, but about menu selections also. Everything on the menu looked appealing, but the Osso Buco stole the show. It was excellent. But I have eaten here before, and have never been disappointed with menu selections."

  • "I was in town visiting my college student, who usually takes us to some chain restaurant. But thanks to Open Table, I put a stop to that and found L May. The restaurant was busy on a blustery cold Saturday night, which was a great sign. We had to wait a little (10 minutes maybe) for our table, but to compensate, the host offered us a free dessert, which was nice. Two things impressed me. The food was very good; I had the Osso Buca, which I recommend and I loved the table shared house salad. The second thing that I enjoyed was that the front of the house was mostly women. Maybe it just was that the service was consistent yet unobtrusive, or maybe it was just that the restaurant felt comfortable. Whatever the reason, I loved it."

  • "Three of us were in Dubuque for a girls weekend. We visited L May on Sunday night and had a great experience. We all had a different entree and they were all delicious. Dinner started with salad served with hot bread and a wonderful cheese spread. I had the pumpkin lasagne, one of us had the trout and the other had the filet. We split a bottle of Pinot Grigio and a brownie topped with ice cream. Our server was knowledgeable, friendly, efficient and helpful. The check was a surprise because it was more than reasonable. When we return to Dubuque L May will definitely be on our list of places to eat."

  • "On way to Dubuque for a reunion checked Open Table for recommendations and found this gem. Welcoming staff, great service, outstanding vittles. In town three nights, ate here twice and would have the third night but they were PACKED. Anything after 5 make sure you have a reservation. Good menu selections and nice wine list and the prices won't knock your socks off."

  • "We dined here as a party of 4 with reservations. The food and beer selection was great. Just wish that they had some of the beer choices on tap. I ordered the pizza and it was awesome. There were 2 steaks ordered in the group and they were cooked perfectly. The server was friendly and great too. My only complaint is that it did take over 2 hours to eat. Our reservation was at 5:30 and we were still waiting for the bill after 7:30 and were supposed to be someplace at 7. Prepare ahead to have time to eat."
