A word from Kyoto Japanese Restaurant
A Salt Lake City icon, Kyoto has delighted literally generations of diners. This cozy restaurant gives the feel of a bit of Kyoto Japan in the Rocky Mountains. Kyoto specializes in authentic Japanese cuisine. House favorites include the Ebi Tempura and Steak Teriyaki. Kyoto is also known for its Sushi Bar. Patrons may either dine at the Sushi Bar or order sushi from a Japanese style booth.

Kyoto Japanese Restaurant was opened by Sam & Yoshiko Tada in 1984. Sam (a native of Kyoto Japan) brought his culinary skills & Yoshiko managed the accounting and service. Both Sam & Yoshiko still participate in the day to day operations of Kyoto.

Diner Reviews
  • "I paid 30 for a sashimi plate and everything is served in cheap plastic plates and cups. We had some special requests, for example a pregnant woman who can't have raw eggs and they kept telling us that it's traditional Japanese, instead of coming up with alternates or solutions. First and last visit."

  • "It has been many years since I ate at Kyoto and I was pleasantly surprised that it was just as good as I remembered. I will definitely be back again."

  • "I've been going to Kyoto for years...I always order the same meal: Steak Teriyaki and Shrimp Tempura. It's always consistently good. The only thing I would change is that sometimes the employees are a little curt if you haven't made reservations, otherwise great dining experience!"

  • "Great food -- best sushi in SLC! Service is good, seating is a bit hard and uncomfortable. Overall great experience every time with good service and great food!"

  • "The sushi is delicious; I can't vouch for anything else. I It's not crazy over-the-top complicated, just good. t's also a Zagat 25, if you pay attention to this sort of thing. Our server was unusually attentive and helpful."

  • "Food was good although th order in which everything is brought out made for a very crowded table. Enjoyed the sushi and service was great. I would go back but probably for lunch."

  • "I've been going to Kyoto's for many years now - close to 25 years and have always had the best experience ever. The food is fantastic, authentic and fresh. I have often not wanted to tell people about Kyoto's, but i realized that was selfish and virtually impossible as I've seen it grow over the years with more and more people. It gets hard to get in nowadays without a reservation. The atmosphere is energetic and I LOVE that you get a feel of Japan somehow in the food and the environment. Everyone I have introduced to Kyoto's becomes an instant fan and goes as often as I do. It's fantastic, it's real and not a fusioned type of restaurant you see these days. This place is LEGIT!"

  • "Everything was so wonderful! Our server was very attentive, yet unobtrusive, so we could still enjoy some conversation. We started out with a couple delicious appetizers, as well as some miso soup & the house salad (their salad dressing is the only one in town that I literally crave). Then on to some sushi and Sukiyaki... by far the best sukiyaki I've ever had in Salt Lake City. Unfortunately, we didn't save room for dessert, but will definitely try some next time. Once again, I left Kyoto extremely satisfied, and look forward to my next visit."

  • "The food was great! We enjoyed the sushi. However, they were completly unaccomidating in seating us. We were seated at the makeshift bar. This bar should not have customers at it. we are looking into the kitchen and watching the crew clean and fold napkins. The waitress tried to do her job, but she was always trying to get in and take things off the table. Even before giving us our bill she had to take all the dishes and wipe the counter top down...very awkward when sitting at the bar. Meanwhile...a table or two sat open the whole time we were there!!!! We left very upset that we were not seated at a table. This place is a 25 minute drive (on a good communte) from home..so it's not likely we will come back due to the service we recieved."

  • "Not my favorite Japanese restaurant in Utah, but not bad either. I ordered sushi, this visit the quality of the fish was just ok. I've had better sushi there before, maybe it was an off day? Also, I got the Kyoto roll which is deep fried, but the roll had a darker, greasier appearance and taste than what I'm used to. My wife got a tempura fried dish that looked light and fluffy, so I'm not sure what was up with mine."

  • "Ate here the other night with my wife and some friends. Been coming her for a couple of years now and I am always impressed. Food is very traditional, including the sushi. Don't go looking for any "Funky" rolls, only the namesake Kyoto Roll is deep fried. The friends we went with were first timers and are already planning a trip back. Ask for Michiko as your server, you won't be disappointed."

  • "Kyoto is the most authentic Japenese food in town, with amazingly perfect tempura and great sushi, attentive staff accommodating to my kid's / a neighborhood gem and treat"

  • "Kyoto combines great sushi with great Japanese food cooked by actual Japanese chefs. The servers still dress in kimonos and many have been there for years and know exactly what to recommend. The Japanese style table on the floor has a sufficient drop so your legs can bend and you feel like you are in a chair. I've been to another Japanese restaurant in Salt Lake where you still had to stretch your legs out because it was impossible to bend your knees. The tempura is still the best in the area. Portions are good sized. We all had take home boxes after eating to our hearts content."

  • "These sushi chefs know how to go out on a limb as far as creativity goes. The flavors are unforgettable, as I want to go back for more. The oysters are amazing and the freshness is key to the great food they serve. The ambience is great for a special occasion, or just a night out to dinner with the kids."

  • "Chefs are from Japan and if you are looking for an authentic Japanese good with big portions this place is great. We ordered various sushi and all tasted fresh and delicious. Both Agedashi and Yudofu appetizers were great. The Yudofu is a big portion so plan on sharing. Nabeyaki Udon was flavorful and had shrimp tempura, lots of chicken and veggies and again in a large pot. If you order any appetizers you definitely want to share the Nabeyaki Udon. Service was quick and friendly. The owner came over and chatted with us. This will be a must stop when we come back to SLC again!"

  • "We are HUGE sushi fans and have yet to find a better offering anywhere! Consistently so fresh, so traditional, so beautiful (gorgeous presentation!) and such amazing combinations of flavor!! Their rolls are HUGE, so they may seem more expensive than "normal" but you get what you pay for and more. One roll is an easy split for 2 people. And don't miss trying their shrimp tempura too! Great for business lunch, date night, some summer patio time and even group celebrations. Aren't we lucky that this is tucked away right in the middle of our own neighborhood!? We will be back again...and again...and again."

  • "We have been dining at Kyoto for many years. The food has remained very fresh and tasty, the service is top-notch, and we were very pleased with the total dining experience. Kyoto's shrimp tempura (we order as an appetizer) continues to be the best in town. This is one of our favorite Japanese restaurants."

  • "When we arrived at this very busy restaurant, they did not have our open table reservation. I had the email confirmation on my phone and I showed it to them. We waited about 20 minutes for an open table."

  • "It's not Takashi, but this is good sushi for the Salt Lake area. The interior is super fun. The waitresses dress in traditional Japanese attire and the booths replicate the - private room behind a screen - experience you'd find at a fancier place. We ordered a bbq'd octopus appetizer that was just okay, but the sushi and rolls were very fresh and quite delicious."

  • "Really nice atmosphere and excellent service. The tempura fried onion rings were a surprise as well as being a little greasy but overall the food was good. We will definately go back."
