A word from Kushi Izakaya & Sushi
Located in the heart of the Mt. Vernon Square neighborhood in D.C. is Kushi, an izakaya and sushi restaurant serving some of the best Japanese cuisine in the city. Izakaya - a traditional Japanese restaurant serving grilled items created from the highest quality ingredients (many of which are flown in daily from Japan) - is represented well here, as Kushi uses a deep charcoal robata pit and smaller yakitori grills to create its delicacies. The grill counter is located in the main dining area and has 30 seats wrapping around it. To complement the grilled meats and vegetables, Kushi presents a fantastic array of fresh sushi and unique concoctions ranging from small-batch sakes and shochus to Japanese microbrews. Focusing on organic and sustainable ingredients, Kushi also puts an emphasis on fresh and delicious seafood. The restaurant features polished steal, reclaimed woods and warm lighting. Kushi offers seats at the grill counter, sushi bar, regular bar and dining room.

Sushi was excellent. Drinks were too. Wish location was different, but that's OK. The eel and scallop rolls, and cevichr were memorable. Oh ya, and the pork belly. It was all delicious. Wait staff was great. Will go again!

A completely underwhelming experience. We were a party of 4 for dinner. It was a rainy day and for some reason the restaurant decided to keep the doors open - resulting in a very humid and muggy environment inside. The wait staff was lackadaisical in their service. Drink orders were not taken in a timely manner. We had to constantly flag someone to refill the water. The food took forever and did not arrive together. Despite ordering together, my entree (Chirashi) took additional 20 minutes and by that time my fellow diners had finished their entrees and were done. The grilled items were good, however the sushi was average and forgettable. Overall we were very disappointed by the experience and cannot in good faith recommend Kushi.

I love Kushi. I've never had a bad meal here. Their grilled vegetables and skewers are outstanding, and their sushi is quite good, as well. I love how varied their menu is: there are plenty of options for vegetarians, non-sushi eaters, etc. They also have a good selection of drinks.

We went to Kushi this past Friday and our experience was exceptional. The service was prompt and efficient, the food was spectacular with the sushi/fish very fresh and tasty. We eat here usually 3 to 4 times a year and they never let us down. If you are looking for real sushi rolls and fresh sashimi, then Kushi is your place. If you are looking for giant overpriced American sushi rolls full of cream cheese, you probably want to look elsewhere. Oh, and we really like their cocktail menu! Great drinks, without breaking the bank.

Service was up to par, otherwise not worth writing about. Truly everything we had was delicious. Standouts were short rib skewer, pork ribs (get the 1/2 rack, you'll want more than 1/4), and very fresh sushi. Great place for groups with lots of veggie, fish, and meat options (including the sushi). Even the edamame were more delicious than I've had elsewhere. Would love to return and sit at the bar to watch the cooks prepare the food. Cocktails were on the small side but tasty. House sake is a steal at $8 for a quality bottle.

They even surprised us with a complimentary dessert that read "Happy Anniversary" in chocolate sauce! I recommend ordering the Sake Blossom for a drink and the crab tempura roll to eat!

Japanese Izakaya, serving smaller dishes so you may sample more tastes of authentic Japanese and Japanese dishes with a slight twist. Nice selection of Japanese drinks (beer, sake, plum wine, {albeit, the plum wine serving was very small} etc), and a creative bar that mixes east and west.

Both Yelp and Zagat listed Kushi as one of the best restaurants in the greater DC area, and I was intrigued. While I like sushi, I'm not terribly adventurous: I ordered a rainbow roll, some salmon nigiri, and some beef short ribs kushiyaki/yakitori. The salmon nigiri was served first: the rice was still warm and the fish was still cold--it was a great experience. Afterwards, the rainbow roll (an inside-out maki of avocado, cucumber, tuna, and salmon roe) was served. I had never had roe served with sushi, but it added a salt and a smooth, fluid texture during consumption. Finally, the beef short ribs yakitori was served. When I bit into the piece I almost lost it--it was that good. If you like Japanese, make it to this restaurant. Period.

Each time I visit Kushi, I'm newly impressed with the excellent food, service and sake selection! It just gets better and better!! The staff are very helpful for expert and novice, alike. The sushi is fresh, perfectly put together and special requests present no problems. But the perfect ending for this meal is a scoop of Black Sesame gelato, Sea Salt gelato and a slice of warm chocolate cake! It just doesn't get any better... Until the next visit!!!

So, I took my wife here for a birthday meal and while the food was good, if you've ever eaten at a Japanese (**read: In Japan) go in expecting a different experience. Don't get me wrong, the food was good, but it wasn't authentic. For example, the korokke (deep fried potato cake) didn't even come with tonkatsu sauce on it which is pretty basic. I asked for some and got a side of the sauce quickly, but it should have arrived with the sauce on it. One more point ... they didn't have, or I didn't see, gyoza on the menu! We were very surprised and a bit disappointed, but we got over it! The long and the short is definitely give it a try, but it will be different than a Japanese izakaya restaurant. Oh, the sushi was seriously delicious!

provides a nice variety of izakaya and sushi dishes. the beer list is somewhat limited (your basic sapporo is pretty much your only japanese beer option), sake menu is better. they had interesting deserts with some unusual flavors (we got sesame ice-cream and it actually tasted like sesame seeds). the service could be better and more accommodating, particularly on the part of the host.

Kushi is that rare DC restaurant with great food AND a quiet ambiance in which to enjoy both the food and conversation with my out-of-town dinner guest. Both of us know Japan well, and the delicious and skillfully prepared and presented food fully met our expectations--food like we remembered, plus wonderful innovations. The service was cheerful, alert, but not overly attentive to the point of being disruptive. In fact, we had dinner here a year ago on my friend's last visit to DC and for all the above reasons chose to come back.

You know where they hand you a sheet w/all the sushi/sashimi selections? They don't do this. There's a limited selection on the menu, perhaps a half dozen basic sushi choices and some rolls. The rest of the menu is kind of an odd mix I'd call Japanese inspired asian. A good place to go if you have some friends who like sushi and some who don't. And a pretty decent sake list, too.

My first visit to Kushi was a good one. The waiter was excellent (Carlos was his name, perhaps?). The sushi was well made, savory and had a great consistency and temperature. The eel roll was particularly excellent. Good atmosphere. Drinks were well made and were delivered quickly as was the food. The pork skewer was kind of amazing. Flavorful and cooked right with the just the right combination of fat and meat on each bite. The ceviche needed more bite, and it had too much cucumber and veggies, which didn't allow one to really enjoy the actual seafood in it. Overall a great place.

I have been going to Kushi since it first opened and loved it. So I was really excited to take my friend visiting from West Africa and whom wanted sushi. We sat for at least 20 mins before I had to ask someone to take our drink order at which time we put in a couple food orders too. When the sushi started arriving the runner wasn't sure what he brought out to us, no one brought soy sauce or asked if we'd like any and our drinks never came. I finally told the Manager what was going on politely and he said they were understaffed. I get bein understaffed but it was not packed. We got some wrong food but i chose to not brig it up

The service at this restaurant was some of the worst that I have had in recent time. The waitress was slow and unresponsive, and when she messed up our bill, neither she nor the manager were apologetic. In fact, I was told (when I was charged $259 for a bill when I should have been charged a fraction of that) that the mix up "shades of gray," and that it would be fixed. Rather than be fixed, I woke up the next morning and had been charged twice. I will never go to this restaurant again.

The service drove us crazy! Despite repeated requests using please and thank you, we could not get Sweet and Low or spice. They only had red pepper flakes for spice, which is totally inappropriate for some foods. Why not Sricacha chile sauce? For the prices they charge, they can afford to provide a decent hot sauce. Server seemed to be on another planet altogether. My guests asked for tea - we got a very small pot with two truly gigantic tea bags (which would be appropriate if one were making gallons of tea). After wondering why the tea was so strong, we looked in the pot and found the two gigantic bags. A small tea bag would have been sufficient for a small pot, not two gigantic ones!!!! Wait staff here is the worst in DC!
