A word from Kushi Izakaya & Sushi
Located in the heart of the Mt. Vernon Square neighborhood in D.C. is Kushi, an izakaya and sushi restaurant serving some of the best Japanese cuisine in the city. Izakaya - a traditional Japanese restaurant serving grilled items created from the highest quality ingredients (many of which are flown in daily from Japan) - is represented well here, as Kushi uses a deep charcoal robata pit and smaller yakitori grills to create its delicacies. The grill counter is located in the main dining area and has 30 seats wrapping around it. To complement the grilled meats and vegetables, Kushi presents a fantastic array of fresh sushi and unique concoctions ranging from small-batch sakes and shochus to Japanese microbrews. Focusing on organic and sustainable ingredients, Kushi also puts an emphasis on fresh and delicious seafood. The restaurant features polished steal, reclaimed woods and warm lighting. Kushi offers seats at the grill counter, sushi bar, regular bar and dining room.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Japanese Izakaya, serving smaller dishes so you may sample more tastes of authentic Japanese and Japanese dishes with a slight twist. Nice selection of Japanese drinks (beer, sake, plum wine, {albeit, the plum wine serving was very small} etc), and a creative bar that mixes east and west."

  • "Both Yelp and Zagat listed Kushi as one of the best restaurants in the greater DC area, and I was intrigued. While I like sushi, I'm not terribly adventurous: I ordered a rainbow roll, some salmon nigiri, and some beef short ribs kushiyaki/yakitori. The salmon nigiri was served first: the rice was still warm and the fish was still cold--it was a great experience. Afterwards, the rainbow roll (an inside-out maki of avocado, cucumber, tuna, and salmon roe) was served. I had never had roe served with sushi, but it added a salt and a smooth, fluid texture during consumption. Finally, the beef short ribs yakitori was served. When I bit into the piece I almost lost it--it was that good. If you like Japanese, make it to this restaurant. Period."

  • "Each time I visit Kushi, I'm newly impressed with the excellent food, service and sake selection! It just gets better and better!! The staff are very helpful for expert and novice, alike. The sushi is fresh, perfectly put together and special requests present no problems. But the perfect ending for this meal is a scoop of Black Sesame gelato, Sea Salt gelato and a slice of warm chocolate cake! It just doesn't get any better... Until the next visit!!!"

  • "Went to Kushi at 8:45 on a Monday night. It was almost empty, despite being told that earlier it was full. A page of half-rice sushi, three of which were very good. Lots of variety, good cheap sake."

  • "Great food selection. One of the best sushi places in town. I don't like that they got rid of the sushi bar."

  • "So, I took my wife here for a birthday meal and while the food was good, if you've ever eaten at a Japanese (**read: In Japan) go in expecting a different experience. Don't get me wrong, the food was good, but it wasn't authentic. For example, the korokke (deep fried potato cake) didn't even come with tonkatsu sauce on it which is pretty basic. I asked for some and got a side of the sauce quickly, but it should have arrived with the sauce on it. One more point ... they didn't have, or I didn't see, gyoza on the menu! We were very surprised and a bit disappointed, but we got over it! The long and the short is definitely give it a try, but it will be different than a Japanese izakaya restaurant. Oh, the sushi was seriously delicious!"

  • "Sushi was OK, drink menu limted, but the service was fantastic."

  • "provides a nice variety of izakaya and sushi dishes. the beer list is somewhat limited (your basic sapporo is pretty much your only japanese beer option), sake menu is better. they had interesting deserts with some unusual flavors (we got sesame ice-cream and it actually tasted like sesame seeds). the service could be better and more accommodating, particularly on the part of the host."

  • "Kushi is that rare DC restaurant with great food AND a quiet ambiance in which to enjoy both the food and conversation with my out-of-town dinner guest. Both of us know Japan well, and the delicious and skillfully prepared and presented food fully met our expectations--food like we remembered, plus wonderful innovations. The service was cheerful, alert, but not overly attentive to the point of being disruptive. In fact, we had dinner here a year ago on my friend's last visit to DC and for all the above reasons chose to come back. "

  • "You know where they hand you a sheet w/all the sushi/sashimi selections? They don't do this. There's a limited selection on the menu, perhaps a half dozen basic sushi choices and some rolls. The rest of the menu is kind of an odd mix I'd call Japanese inspired asian. A good place to go if you have some friends who like sushi and some who don't. And a pretty decent sake list, too."

  • "Was very disappointed by the food. Low quality sushi, particularly for the price."

  • "Food was ok - service was TERRIBLE. Wanted to put our party of 5 at a hightop communal table. They could NOT figure out how to put tables together to make a larger table. Took forever to order drinks and to get them. Servers were NOT knowledgeable about the menu or the bar.I have never rated a restaurant as poor "

  • "We ate a mixture of their sushi and grilled dishes. The grilled dishes were OK, but nothing special. The sushi is expensive, but tasty. If you live in the neighborhood, it is worth going there for the happy hour and sushi. It is not worth a special trip."

  • "The food is excellent however portions are notably small, and expensive. This may explain the ability to reserve prime times Sat morning for Sat night. One better eat before one goes. "

  • "My first visit to Kushi was a good one. The waiter was excellent (Carlos was his name, perhaps?). The sushi was well made, savory and had a great consistency and temperature. The eel roll was particularly excellent. Good atmosphere. Drinks were well made and were delivered quickly as was the food. The pork skewer was kind of amazing. Flavorful and cooked right with the just the right combination of fat and meat on each bite. The ceviche needed more bite, and it had too much cucumber and veggies, which didn't allow one to really enjoy the actual seafood in it. Overall a great place."

  • "The food was great. Our waitress was awesome... the happy hour menu was kind of limited but everything we ordered was awesome! I def recommend this restaurant!!"

  • "We came in before a show at the Verizon Center. The wait staff were extremely nice and attentive, even asking us as the beginning of the meal if there was a certain time we had to be out by. The food was also great. In particilar the eggplant starter and pork belly skewers were absolutely excellent."

  • "With the exception of the very bland chawanmushi, the old bay scallop, inari (simple but excellent), ,pork belly (excellent), scallop sushi, masago nigiri, salmon tartare, maguro, and kamonegi were fine. Certain to return whenever I am in DC."

  • "Came here with a friend for his Bday and we had a good time overall. They have a good choice of beers and cocktails, food was good but we were expecting more not the casual DC tapas serving scene."

  • "I have been going to Kushi since it first opened and loved it. So I was really excited to take my friend visiting from West Africa and whom wanted sushi. We sat for at least 20 mins before I had to ask someone to take our drink order at which time we put in a couple food orders too. When the sushi started arriving the runner wasn't sure what he brought out to us, no one brought soy sauce or asked if we'd like any and our drinks never came. I finally told the Manager what was going on politely and he said they were understaffed. I get bein understaffed but it was not packed. We got some wrong food but i chose to not brig it up"

  • "Very tasty food and a good selection of Japanese flavors; my gin and blackberry cocktail was very good; our server was friendly. It was a quiet night because the weather was snowy, and we were very happy to be cozy inside with delicious things to eat."

  • "Were staying in the neighborhood & our 9-yr old grandson wanted sushi. Boy are we glad he did! Everything about this store-front restaurant was just delightful. Creative cocktails, lovingly handcrafted exceedingly fresh food, even surprisingly inventive & tasty desserts! Have not eaten at other DC sushi houses, but it would be hard to imagine many any nicer that this! A true keeper!!!"

  • "The service at this restaurant was some of the worst that I have had in recent time. The waitress was slow and unresponsive, and when she messed up our bill, neither she nor the manager were apologetic. In fact, I was told (when I was charged $259 for a bill when I should have been charged a fraction of that) that the mix up "shades of gray," and that it would be fixed. Rather than be fixed, I woke up the next morning and had been charged twice. I will never go to this restaurant again."

  • "Be sure to ask the server if they have anything off-menu. The live scallops were out of this world. Also, dont miss the duck breast with scallions..."

  • "The service drove us crazy! Despite repeated requests using please and thank you, we could not get Sweet and Low or spice. They only had red pepper flakes for spice, which is totally inappropriate for some foods. Why not Sricacha chile sauce? For the prices they charge, they can afford to provide a decent hot sauce. Server seemed to be on another planet altogether. My guests asked for tea - we got a very small pot with two truly gigantic tea bags (which would be appropriate if one were making gallons of tea). After wondering why the tea was so strong, we looked in the pot and found the two gigantic bags. A small tea bag would have been sufficient for a small pot, not two gigantic ones!!!! Wait staff here is the worst in DC!"

  • "Always enjoy sitting at the sushi bar to watch all the action."

  • "Sushi was fair. Very small choice on rolls and the rolls were average. Service was great and it was pretty quite for sitting next to the bar. This is a sushi place you would go to if you are in a pinch. Not a place you go to if you really like grat sushi."

  • "The food ranged from not bad to very good. We really liked the smoked salmon and spicy tuna rolls, and the pork belly skewers were great too. The one downside is they were out of the 2 drinks we actually wanted to order, so we tried a couple others, none of which were that good. They were all wayyy too sweet and syrupy. This was soon after a big snow so its probably not their fault for being out of some ingredients, but it would have been nice if the backup choices had been better. The place itself has a cool vibe to it although they were playing music a little too loud in my opinion (and I'm not exactly a volume-sensitive person). I would definitely come back again though and maybe just stick to wine with my food!"

  • "Kushi is my go-to for Japanese bar food and A- sushi. Little pricy ($100 for two without drinks) but fun decor and inventive menu that changes frequently keeps me coming back."

  • "We had actually eaten a late lunch and had early dinner reservations, so not much of an appetite. We nevertheless found a great selection of Japanese "tapas" type food and had a light but great tasting meal that absolutely filled the bill."

  • "Great food at a decent price. The food can be ordered a la carte which is nice if you want some of everything but it can get expensive so beware. Highly recommend the sushi and the duck."

  • "All the items that I wanted to order was not available because the grill is not ready for lunch, only for dinner. When I tried to order one item that was written on the wall, that was not available either (another grilled item). So I ordered all the items that was listed in the lunch menu & guess what, the croquette was not available either. Pretty funny."

  • "We love yakitori/kushiyaki, but haven't had options in DC. The drinks & the staff were great. The decor is casual-cool, not fancy. This is an Americanized place in decor & food/bev options. Tasty though. The yakitori was limited & did not include options like skin, chicken "oysters", heart, & a host of other skewered, charcoal-roasted delicacies, but the beef short ribs were fantastic--savory, meaty, & drenched in a sweet teriyaki-type sauce. Spicy tuna handroll, fried chicken (tenders), & the seared tuna were terrific w/ avg small-plate size portions. Happy hour until 8pm (on Sun at least) & the drink & food specials are worth a trip--get the lychee martini & oysters for 50 cents. A good deal for yum, just don't expect authenticity."

  • "We had the chef's tasting menu and it was excellent. There were a lot of changes on the menu since the last time I went, so I was a bit sad to see my favorite dishes gone, but the food was better than ever before. And the cocktails are amazing."

  • "Sushi, sake, oysters, and happy hour appetizer menu all were good, and prices matched the quality. Unfortunately, my girlfriend wanted vegetarian, and aside from a cucumber roll and an asparagus side, there were no other options for her. Good service"

  • "Kushi has good sushi and sashimi. And it has plenty of choices for people who do not like "cold, dead fish." It even has quite a respectable steak for people who had to be dragged there kicking and screaming. Two different grills. Terrific, personalized service. There are lots of different sakes, the grape wine list is very limited and could stand a good deal of improvement."
