Kuroshio (黒潮) is a creative Japanese restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor serving Japanese cuisine, steak, seafood, sushi, and sake.

At Kuroshio, we pride ourselves not only on serving wholesome foods made from the freshest and best ingredients, but also on presenting elegant, meticulously crafted dishes.

Our restaurant’s name also refers to the Kuroshio current, which hugs the eastern coast of the Asian continent and flows north along Japan’s western coast much in the way in which the Gulf Stream current clings to North America’s eastern coast. The inspiration for many of our dishes originates in the eastern Asian nations through which the Kuroshio current flows. It is the source of most of our seafood as well.

Kuroshio blends and joins the similar and the disparate to create memorable flavors. We look forward to giving you a delightful and memorable dining experience.

  • "Had the best lamb chops ever last Friday. Was with clients who said the same about their lamb chops. Don't miss this restaurant. For fine dining, my choice along with Vinology in Ann Arbor. This was (I think) my 5th time dining at Kuroshio and all food was always something to dream, think and talk about afterwards. I like my red wine a little cooler than "room temperature", they actually have a wine thermometer there, no other restaurant I have been to in a long time has one. They are serious about their food and drinks. Some food is Asian inspired or cross-over, they also have lots of high end American/European. There is something for everybody. Can only recommend!"

  • "We had a reservation and waited about 15 minutes to be seated. During that time the host seemed frazzled running around trying to collect checks, pick up plates and set tables for new parties. He was polite but the frantic energy was a downer. Once seated we waited 10 minutes before our sever came with water and to take our drink order. After that another 10 minutes to get the drinks and have our food order taken. The server was sweet but she too seemed frazzled. The lamb and ribeye were excellent and the saki martini was interesting to try. Will probably return but hard to unwind with the frantic staff's energy."

  • "My husband and were delighted with Kuroshio. My Sake-Cucumber martini was an incredible palate cleanser to lead in to the highest quality fatty tune, miso soup, sushi selection (with tender and delectable octopus) and the shaved ice dessert. The Oregon Pinot Gris was a perfect foil for the dinner."

  • "Went during restaurant week, it was not busy. Menu is interesting mix of Japanese and Asian-infused American, so a good spot for those who crave a sushi fix and those who won't touch the stuff. Service was slow and just not up to standard. It was slow enough that I joked as I went to the rest room that of course that is when the soup would show up. Imagine my surprise when I returned and dinner had been served. Our server was completely flustered when we asked about the soup. Discarded edame pods from appetizer were still on table as we left, wine bucket was never removed...takes a lot for me to leave less than 20% tip, this was one of those times. Food was good though!"

  • "We went there for AA restaurant week. 15 dollars for 2 servings. Great deal! Normally it takes about the same price only for 1. The udon tastes good with delicious soup. I love the California roll so much and this is the only roll that I've had in AA made with fresh crab meat! NOT the starch you are always served with rolls in other restaurant. Kuroshio is quiet during weekday lunch time. Personal expense would be about 20 dollars. Not sure if it's run by Japanese (our waiter or the manager looks like Korean, not sure, just a guess~) You may also try blue fin tuna there."

  • "The ambience of this place is great--typical contemporary modern Japanese style architecture with a clean cut look. I thought the food was good. I got duck ramen. However the service was pretty subpar, and we waited about 40 minutes for our food even though there were only two other seated tables in the restaurant at the time. Cheesecake tempura was also delicious, but lacked cheesecake. It was more of a fried concoction. One plus about this place is that they have super cheap beers. You can buy a good 12 or 16 oz. for $4 or less."

  • "Kuroshio is situated away from the main drag on Main Street. It's a comfortable restaurant with good chairs and excellent decor. The food presentation is very nicely done. The food tasted good too. Both the cooked and sushi was tasty. The only problem I saw was the delivery of the food. For some reason, the food wasn't brought out at the same time for the 4 of us. We had 1 person bring out the food at different times for both the appetizer and the entree. I noticed for another table next to use with three people at their table, they had two servers bring out the food at the same time. This obvious difference made for a disgruntled person in our group. We all had to wait until her food showed up which made our food cold."

  • "I went to Kuroshio for New Years Eve on a date and had a great time. The food was excellent and loved the restaurant decor. There are quite a few asian restaurants in Ann Arbor but I felt that Kuroshio is one of the few places that offers fancy asian cuisine while providing an exceptional experience. The wait staff was very friendly and helped with picking out a sushi dish since neither of us are familiar with sushi. We also got drinks at the bar and the bartenders did not skimp out on the alcohol, as many bartenders have for us in the past. The music also helped the overall atmosphere while not drowning out the sounds of others, making it possible to still talk to my date. I would highly recommend Kuroshio to a friend."

  • "Our first time visiting Kuroshio will certainly not be our last. The food and service were both extraordinary. Everything from soup to coffee was memorable. I had the chef's sampling plate and that was a lot of food. Unfortunately I ate every bit. The lamb chops were like none I had ever had. They had a honey sauce that was not too sweet or cloying. Really good food. The service was perfect. Staff let us mingle at the table for quite some time after our plates had been cleared. I can't wait to return. A really nice evening."

  • "My husband and I decided to book an early dinner before hitting the stores. Our waiter was exceptional in his attention to us - and my meal was exceptional, although one of the specialty rolls that my husband ordered was just fair. I would go back there again - try their tuna tartar! Yummmmm"

  • "This was our first time at the restaurant and we loved it. We ended up eating in the bar area for their excellent happy hour. I was very impressed with the innovation of the food and alcoholic beverages on the menu and everything tasted as great as the descriptions sounded. The service was great also. The bartender was very polite, informative and welcoming. We will be going back soon! It is my new favorite place for sushi and drinks!"

  • "In the space of the Pretzel Bell of years ago is Kuroshio Restaurant. Forty-five years ago I had a free pitcher of beer on my 21st birthday at the Pretzel Bell. I went back in time to the same place. But, I found Kuroshio. Superb sushi. I tried both the sake and a Hendricks martini. The sake goes better with the dinner and the service was excellent. Visual ambience is serene but auditory insults abound for the senior citizen. I'm going back for more."

  • "No, it won't outshine the best of San Francisco or Seattle, but Kuroshio is, hands-down, the most creative Japanese food being served in the Ann Arbor area. We've been here several times, and the food is consistently excellent. Appetizer favorites include soft shell crab with a Shiraz reduction, and melt-in-your-mouth yellowtail (hamachi) carpaccio. I'm partial to the Venice roll (snow crab and yellowtail), but will generally let the sushi bar fill my plate with whatever's freshest or unusual. Extra points for a choice selection of sake at various price points, decent beer and wine lists, and a tranquil, modern decor. Prices are slightly higher than most other local sit-down sushi places, but in line for the menu's creativity and quality."

  • "I hadn't been in since this place changed to Kuroshio, and I'm sorry I hadn't been in sooner! It was wonderful! Quiet, peaceful place to spend a friday night with friends. The food was great! We ordered the 5 course dinner....for $35. It was wonderful, not too much food and great taste treats."

  • "Kyroshio clearly has potential as it has all the makings of a great restaurant. It is clearly experiencing growing pains I hope it overcomes. The food was first rate, but front of house was disorganized and relied far to much on technology to run the restaurant. It started with the seating. Lots of empty tables, but customers were being told they had no availability. Seriously?! It took 40 minutes for a waitress to show at our table, another 20 before drink orders were taken. 20 more before they were delivered. Really! In a shop with its act together, we would have been a good way through with our meal by then, and the table would have become available for turnover shortly there after."

DO NOT EAT STAKE FROM THIS RESTAURANT . the reson i had a stake from this place, the had a combo meal but it was just wasting money. stake was like rubber , i can tell they are try to save money on Food Ingredients. but customers are not stupid. i knew, why this place was so empty on friday night.."

  • "The transformation of this restaurant from the Champion House is amazing. Tables are widely spaced. It is quiet and tranquil. My soup was fabulous. The sushi was average with less than generous fish slices. Service was very good though the server was initially slow getting to our table though the restaurant was not busy. I would go back."

  • "We had a very good dining experience at Kuroshio. Each one in our family decided to try the 5 course prix fixe dinner. We found each course to be surprisingly pleasing. To be fair, the meal we had consisted of a soup, tempura appetizer, sable fish, lamb shops and green tea tiramisu. Each serving was delicious and cooked to perfection. We did try one roll and that was also delicious. Overall, it was an excellent choice for our special occasion celebration."
