Diner Reviews
  • "Went to Kurah a week ago and just went back again. The small plates are superb and the charming ambience is perfect for dinner and conversation. They ran out of a couple of dishes fairly early in the evening, but the alternatives were not disappointing. We'll be back!"

  • "Loved the food, atmosphere, and service. I actually really loved being able to sit upstairs. I still felt like I was in the same room as the other guests downstairs (can look over and see them), but loved the idea of being upstairs so it felt a little bit private!"

  • "We had theater tix that had us pushing dinner reservations to the final half hour (10:30). Service remained top-notch while we did feel a bit of pressure from the kitchen to finish up. Small plates came out in rapid succession, desserts outpacing main courses in some instances which was a bit frustrating. Not a deal-breaker, however - with every bite still as delicious as the one the one that came before!"

  • "Fantastic food and service. We had a group of 7 they sat us in a private room. Enjoyed the entire evening and we will be back soon."

  • "In Chicago for a weekend and were interested in eating Tapas near our hotel. Found Kurah on OpenTable and weren't disappointed. We had the Stuffed Grape Leaves, Pomegranate Tabouli, Rosemary Infused Baba Gannoush and the Grilled Shrimp --all were delicious, flavorful and more than enough for two people. We also had a specialty drink recommended by our server--vodka, lemon juice and ginger beer--that was refreshing. Overall a very pleasant experience. Our bartender/server Hector was very accomodating and attentive. For those who need gluten free dishes, they are clearly marked on the menu."

  • "Ambience is nice, particularly the upstairs but none of the menu items I tried were particularly good. Oysters have a strange brown soy-sauce thing on them, hummus has too much liquid on the top, they were out of the ceviche the night I was there (which was the only item I was particularly interested in trying), $12 martini was more like a $8 martini. I might go back just to do the bar, but then again maybe not because their drinks are not cheap."

  • "Best service in Chicago. Waitress made great recommendations, timed our tapas style selections and even volunteered to cancel out our final dishes in case our eyes were bigger than our bellies. Best Mediterranean food in the south loop and a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. Worth the visit and ample parking to boot."

  • "The menu took traditional tapas favorites and added a fresh or contemporary twist - like the taboleh pomegranate salad or warm stuffed grape leaves and sweet peppers. Excellent falafel. The staff were very nice and eager to please. The decor was very tasteful, warm, and inviting."

  • "My friend and I went for drinks and apps. The service was really good and the decor was cool. We only ordered the hummus and the falafel. Both were awesome! I also like how they automatically bring out olives, olive oil and spices along with warm pita bread when you first sit down. I'll definitely be back to try the entree tapas along with a few other hot/cold ones I wanted to try. Happy the south loop landed another good restaurant!"

  • "We thought Kurah and the tapas experience would be great for a large business group from around the world. But, although the restaurant was virtually empty, we were served by one waiter, who was also the sommelier, bartender and maitre 'd. Poor chap, he could not keep up with it. Cardinal sin for business gatherings, drinks took forever and when they finally arrived, wine was not served. It even took a while to get the bottles opened. We tried to pre-order the main courses, so that they would flow smoothly following two rounds of tapas, but there was still a long lag, making for a slow meal. Portions were so small, I had to eat something back at the room to compensate. One good point -- folks who had the rose flan, loved it."

  • "A group of us went to Kurah's and we got great service. We sat and talked a long time. Fortunately, it wasn't a busy time for them. Food was very tastey and the waiter was very helpful for items we didn't recognize. Drinks were yummy."

  • "We were in Chicago for a romantic Valentine's weekend & had found Kurah online. We had reservations which was good as even though it was a snowy Saturday night, the place was packed. Foodwise we went for 3 of the tapas dishes - hummus & maldoum (both v good) & bacon wrapped dates (absolutely delicious). If you order nothing else here you have to have the bacon wrapped dates. Ambience was excellent. Seating is a bit tight. Downside was the server - took our order then had to come back because he'd forgotten over half of it, tried to give us the wrong drinks twice, tried to bill us for one of those drinks, forgot to order the next tables food and got their drinks order wrong. Think just an issue with our server - all others were good."

  • "We went there with a "foodie"friend from Denver who was visiting for the weekend. It was a truly amazing experience in every way. Friendly staff,, low key but highly professional service as we ordered off the menu, and then amazing food. I own a restaurant in Boulder, CO and am super observant on these matters. This was over the top exceptional in every way. We will go back regularly."

  • "Tasty middle eastern food a few steps above the typical cheap fast falafel/shawarma restaurants. The ambiance is very nice, service was friendly and attentive. There were a number of unusal dishes on the menu along with more typical eastern Mediterranean items. The small plates had enough food for four people to share. Although I wouldn't specifically call it a "special occasion" place, it was a nice place to spend a special occasion."

  • "The service was excellent and food was very good. All menu items are marked clearly when gluten free. All in all a great evening."

  • "A wonderful.little restaurant in the south loop...it has a very warm and cozy ambience, with terrific service. Food was flavorful and we'll presented. Wine list was small, but with a little bit of everything. We had our 5 year with us as well, with no problems. I would definitely go back!"

  • "This is my second visit to Chicago in 6 months and I dinned at Kurah three times. I love it. The food is very tasty and obviously cooked with organic ingredients and lots of passion. I won't leave Chicago without dinning at Kurah at least once. Do not miss it if you are a visitor and if you a local try it once and I bet you will be hooked :) Manal"

  • "Great ambience. easy parking. good food. Tip included for party of 5 but no notice on menu or when booking. Surprise! Dessert served without plates , twice, for a party of 5. Waiter disappeared until the bill arrived. No response from management email. Odd end to a lovely evening."

  • "Kurah is the best Tapas restaurant I have been to Chicago, hand downs. Between the superb food, excellent service and amazing prices, we are there all the time. You will not be disappointed!"

  • "This is a great place to dine with friends. The food is simply delicious and the option for small or larger plates makes choosing food for the group lots of fun. My husband and I have been several times with other couples. We will usually have about 4 small plates, one or two larger plates and dessert. It's a good deal of food, but each dish is so good we always want to try just one more. Don't miss the bacon wrapped dates! The interior is warm and elegant, the seats comfy and the lighting good. The only jarring note is a TV by the bar. It just doesn't go with the feel of the place, but isn't offensive. In addition to main floor seating, there's a cozy loft area and a great space for larger groups with a view straight into the kitchen."

  • "Note to the waiter, don't promise the most epic dining experience ever, chances are it won't be. Apps: hummus, bacon wrapped dates & marinated vegetables. The vegetables were my favorite, bacon wrapped dates were yummy but not the best we've had and the hummus was good but not worth raving about. Entrees: braised lamb & salmon. The lamb was flavorful and tender but my husband was disappointed. The salmon was our favorite, the only complaint about the salmon dish was that it was served over greens which were salty beyond measure, ridiculously salty. Price-wise it's a bit steep for the level of food that they're serving, the ambiance and the service was great but they need to really step up their food so that it's not quite so forgettable."

  • "We live in the area and have been wanting to try Kurah given others' recs. It was great! We went with another couple and all remarked on how great each dish was. We stuck with tapas and had a vegetarian with us, so most of our dishes were meatless. Our favorite was the red lentil soup. Most importantly, service was excellent. We talked for quite a while before ordering and our waitress checked in just enough to make sure she was there when we were ready, but did a nice job of not being intrusive. They were also very receptive and responsive to feedback (one cocktail - the mediterranean martini - we felt could use more olive juice. they added it and the drink was great). We will definitely go back and will bring others."

  • "I stumbled upon this place just driving down Michigan and love Mediterranean food so I figured I'd give it a try. The menu is more than the traditional Mediterranean selection, which was a nice surprise. My husband and I tried a few dishes and each of them were simply delicious. The Kubbeh and Biryani were my favorites, and my husband had the braised lamb shank which, while very good, was just a little dry. This will be one of our new go-to spots for a good meal with a very nice atmosphere. The only drawback that we saw was that initially we were given a table near the door and there was a terrible and unbearable draft. They moved us to the second level and it was the extreme opposite- too hot! But overall, still a good place."

  • "My friend and I came here for a nice meal and great wine. What I enjoyed most about this place is the adequate amount of assistance - they came to our table just the right amount, not too much or too little. I look forward to going back."

  • "The food and service were okay. The restaurant is small. It was a little smoky inside from the kitchen; they need a better ventilation system. We had a party of five with a reservation for 6 PM. There were empty tables that were already set that could have accommodated our party. However, we were asked to wait from them to clean off tables. We were finally seated at tables that were directly in front of the door. We were blasted with cold air every time the door opened. They need to get heavy drapes to stop the cold air from blasting patrons in the restaurant. We had a much better experience on the patio during the summer. We will go back in the summer to dine on the patio and will skip their indoor seating."

  • "This has become our favorite neighborhood restaurant. We took a friend there for her birthday and she wanted to return the next day. We waited a week. The food is well prepared We love the biryani and the kubbeh. It's fun to try and share the different tapas. We've enjoyed everything we've tried. The service is friendly and prompt. It's intimate and cozy. They also have a good wine list. Prices are moderate, so we don't have to wait for a special occasion to go."

  • "Wonderful food in a cozy atmosphere. We were seated immediately for our reservation at a nice table upstairs. We were seated next to a large group of 15 and there was no problem with noise or feeling like you were forgotten by the server. Great find on the south loop!"

  • "while the food was pretty good, the service tried hard to rush us through a 4 course dinner, despite several attempts to slow down the process. We considered the behaviour of our waitress pretty rude, particularly as there were no queues waiting for a table. She didn't give us sufficient time to choose our food or to even finish our courses."

  • "Kurah takes mediterranean food to a new level. Everything is prepared on site, including the warm pita bread fresh from the oven. We have been there four times and enjoyed every meal, as did our guests. Try the biryani. It is full of yummy goodness. The atmosphere is cosy and inviting with beautiful stenciled decor that seems to get prettier every time I visit. They were just put on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list and they definitely deserve to be there. Do not leave without trying the hummus."

  • "This was our first time here. The décor is attractive, and the seats are comfortable. Our server was very good, describing unfamiliar items on the menu and giving prompt service. We enjoyed the food and the portions were good sized. The only negative was with the hostess. We arrived 10 minutes before our 6:45 reservation and she tried to give us the worst seat in the place -- right in front of the door. And this was after we commented on how chilly it was when the door opened. There were 4 other open tables, but she said they were "reserved" -- so was ours! We had to be rather insistent before she gave in, and my husband was ready to leave before we sat in the draft by the door. Gave a bad start to the night, and was unnecessary."

  • "The food at this restaurant is delicious and varied, a fusion of Mediterranean-inspired, particularly Lebanese, cuisine. The food is served tapas style and three of us ordered 4 small plates, plus one entree dish to share, which was a superb lamb shank. Dessert was a flan flavored with rose water. Everything we tried was delicious, subtly flavored, and beautifully presented. The waiter was friendly, knowledgeable and guided our selections. The decor is sumptuous and colorful. The restaurant did seem a little cramped, although we did dine on a Friday evening. All three of us agreed we had a fabulous dining experience and would return for more!"

  • "We discovered this restaurant online and was in our neighborhood so decided to give it a try. Wow! We weren't disappointed. The service was wonderful and the food was great! The home-made pita bread that was brought to the table with the olives is incredible! We ate more than we intended but it was difficult to stop - it was really wonderful! We ordered a couple small plates (dolmades and caramelized onion and spinach pie) and shared the lamb and beef shawarma. Everything was absolutely delicious and a step up from other mediterranean food we have had and love! We will definitely return to try everything on the menu!"

  • "My friend and I went to Kurah to catch up on the news after not getting together in months. We sat upstairs and that was delightful. The Ceviche was superb and I really enjoyed the Lebanese Rose wine they offered. Every time I've been to Kurah I've had different food and everything has always been perfectly spiced."
