A word from Kunkel's Seafood & Steakhouse
The Kunkel family was introduced to the restaurant business in 1979, when Carol & John purchased a well established luncheonette located on Kings Highway in Audubon, called Del"s Luncheonette. The family lived above the business and our children were exposed to the restaurant business at a very early age. Family has always been one of the key ingredients to our success in every restaurant that we have owned or have operated since then.
The feel of family is evident throughout Kunkel's, from the moment you walk in the door and are greeted by Carol, all the way to the kitchen where son Justin is preparing some of our great meals. You feel at home in our cozy dining room featuring two fireplaces and mahogany and painted woodwork throughout, which was designed and built by John. You will also find daughter's Rachel and Tereze occasionally serving our guests, as well as son-n-law Jim overindulging on pasta on Tuesday nights.

  • "I really wanted to like this place. My party of 6 ordered steaks. 2 fillets, 2 NY strip, and 2 ribeye. All were bland. Honestly no flavor or seasoning at all. So disappointing. The restaurant was nice, the service was good in the beginning but then as tables started to come in our waitress disappeared. The salad was good but the balsamic dressing was entirely too sweet. Such a shame."

  • "When I want ambiance, delicious food and a 'special' place to dine, I think of Kunkel's. It is on the top of my 'favorite' list. Carol, Chris and the staff are always a delight as the wiz around the dining room making certain all their guests needs are met. It is the 'go to' place for special occasions or for just an impromptu lunch. I used the website to make my reservation for a birthday celebration, party of 7 last week and it worked very well. I will use that service again for future parties."

  • "So we thought it was restaurant week, we were a day early. Not a problem. Started with the Johnny salad, a wedge salad, great blue cheese and the restaurants own dressing, almost a thouisand island- russian, but lighter. The filet with the kunkel love was cooked to perfection, albeit the sauce was too peppery for my taste but I still managed to finish all. The salmon, teryaki and bok cho was also cooked perfectly. The waiter however failed to ask if we were interested in dessert. We weren't, but.... he should have asked anyway. All in all another good dining experience."

  • "I ordered the grouper. It did not taste extremely fresh but had a fishy taste when it should have been mild. I've never had grouper, but everyone tells me it's very mild tasting. All sides we had were excellent. The haricot verts were cooked perfectly. The bread pudding and hazelnut cake were both excellent. The wedge salad was served with bacon, also a great choice."

  • "Well done! We dined at Kunkel's during Restaurant Week and will certainly dine there again. The overall experience was wonderful. Our server, Sarah, was terrific. The mussels fra diablo alone were worth the price of admission. And the sun roasted tomato soup was hands down one of the best soups I've ever had (and I don't like tomato soup!). The entrees (grouper and salmon cakes) were equally delicious. And the hazelnut cake! I just can't say enough about the entire meal. Excellent!"

  • "What a great place! There were six of us and we all had a great time. We were seated at the "chef's table," and it was nice and private. Our appetizers were delish as well as our meals, and the desserts were fab! They have a variety of food for every palette. The workers were very pleasant and attentive and the atmosphere was warm and comforting. I would definitely go back and recommend to anyone!"

  • "Although the place was nice, and the waitress was very friendly, there were a few issues; First, the hostess was rude to my wife when we identified we were there. We were 15 minutes early, and the hostess made a comment about us being early, based on her facial experssion, she wasn't happy about it. Next, I ordered a soup as my first course. The soup never arrived, my wifes appetizer did, as well as the salads, but not my soup. Finally, I ordered the Filet Mignon, it was the first Filet Mignon that I was ever served that had FAT in it. As a rule, I never return my food, and typically don't comment to the help unless it is not eatable. In this case, the meat I was served was ok, but it could not have been Filet Mignon."

  • "Try to request seating near one of the fireplaces. Very romantic. Although the tables were quite full, the noise level was still intimate. Servers are friendly and knowledgeable; the food is outstanding - the oysters are amazing! Meals can be adjusted for special requests, but is normally not necessary since everything is flavorful. BYOB and be prepared for a wonderful dining experience."

  • "Decided on a whim to go to dinner during Taste of the Town and so glad that we did. It's been awhile since our last visit to Kunkles, but still as good as we remember. There were alot of the choices for a tasting menu, making it "hard" to decide what to choose! I opted for the roasted tomato soup and my husband tried the short rib sliders for our apps, both very much to our liking. My husband went with the swordfish and I had the tilapia for dinner. My husband was content with his portion size and I was only able to eat half of my fish (lucky for him, had ended up finishing mine!) Unfortunatly, they were out of the apple dessert so we tried the creme brule and the cannoli, both a great way to end a very delicious meal!"

  • "When a restauant is around for ten years they're doing something right. Kunkel's is relieable and delivers what's promised on their menu. The menu just never seems to change which doesn't make me want to go there too often. Our appetizers of mussels and calamari were good. When I ordered my salmon rare I was told that it couldn't be prepared that way since it was fresh. ???? It was nicely done, but it makes me wonder if it's just a nuked fish? Their steaks are always good and their wedge salad is a meal by itself. I can't say that I didn't enjoy the food but things looked a bit tired. I'd recommend Kunkel's but with some caveats."

  • "This restaurant is only 5 blocks from house but this was first time visited. Service was outstanding and friendly. Hostess, waitress and busboy all went out of their way to make sure we were satisfied. Appetizer was so large that it could have been dinner for my wife. Our steaks were both cooked to perfection and the atmosphere was conducive to a quiet celebration for my wife and I. Desert was so rich and tasteful that we only split one desert. Definately a must eat at restaurant"

  • "Our latest visit was in celebration of a family birthday. It was the first visit for most of our family members. Our server Maureen was knowledgeable and gracious. The menu contained a nice variety and everything was delicious. I suggest you try the Thai Calamari. We never felt rushed as the service was paced just right so we could thoroughly enjoyed each course. We will definitely return."

  • "We made a reservation for 8:30 and were rushed. They told us kitchen closed at 9:00pm, but that was not prevalent on the on-line reservation and they did take reservations until 9pm. Food was brought out quickly and was fresh and hot, but not time between courses. They did not rush us out of the restaurant, but did rush the meal. Pricey, but food excellent. I would definitely go back again, but would make an earlier reservation. This is not a place to go for a later dinner and they do not cater to a later crowd. I would not make a reservation any later than 7:30. Also for a Friday night, it wasn't crowded so we really did not need reservations, but may have been just a fluke. This is a BYOB and that is great for a cost savings."

  • "We had another delicious meal for a family birthday celebration at Kunkel's! The Sea Bass special was amazing as well as the other menu favorites we had! My only complaint would be that the service was extremely slow and inattentive at times. This has never been the case before when we have dined, so I believe it to be due to the party they had up front and hope it will not be the case next time!"

  • "We have dined there numerous times and this is the first time the service was lacking. Hopefully this was a isolated incident. The server was very slow to acknowledge us and we had to ask for bread. The busy boy hovered around the table trying to take your plate, with food on it, the moment you put your fork down. The server was not very visible which is hard to do in a small dining room."

  • "Highly recommend! My wife and I were out shopping and decided to try a new place...we are so happy we randomly picked Kunkel. We had the Thai Calamari, which was amazing. Just enough sweet and spice. Highly recommend! We both had the filets, so tender and good! I had the mashed potatoes and my wife tried the steak fries, which were seasoned to perfection. We are both looking forward to coming again!!! We def added Kunkel's to our BYOB list!!"

  • "I was taken aback by the one bad review that I read about this restaurant, but after my fantastic dining experience last Saturday night I realized that you can't judge a restaurant by one review, especially when that person clearly must be looking at everything through their rear orifice. Please Kunkel's keep up the good work, we really enjoyed your establishment and I'm glad to see a family owned restaurant as nice as yours."

  • "Big disappointment. First the online menu did not match the actual menu . . . and we weren't thrilled with the actual menu. We ordered the muscles as an appy. Muscles came with no plates or other bowl for the shells. There was toast in the muscles for dipping that was soooo burnt, it was black . . . and they served it that way!! We didn't get served our bread until after we ate our appy and salad. But the worst part of the meal was the main coarse. They advertise as a "Seafood & Steak House". I ordered the crab cakes. They were obviously frozen, deep fried and all breading!! Awful for $28!!! Awful from a restaurant that uses SEAFOOD in their name. The décor is stuck in the 80's Restaurant Impossible . . . where are you?!?!"

  • "My party and I enjoyed our recent dining experience. All went well and service was great. Started out moderately, quiet however, got a bit loud by the end of our meal. Not sure if that is usual because it seemed to be just one table of all adults, by the way, making all the loud noise. It was hard to hear after they arrived. Otherwise, it wa a very pleaant experience. I would recommend this restaurant to my friends and family."
