Had the gnocchi and it was delicious. Soft pillows that melted in my mouth. My friend had a chicken salad with olives and she loved hers as well. Perfect place to grab a bite to eat before going to the Curran Theatre.

I was a little taken aback by the booth located behind the hostess station, where the wait staff used as a walkway. We felt a little like we were in their space. On the upside, it was probably a little quieter tucked back there.

  • Great birthday pre-theater dinner

We dined with close friends before the theater. It was her birthday. The service was attentive but not overdone. Our waiter willingly helped our friend select menu items which met her dietary requirements. Food was served promptly to keep us on our schedule. Three of us had the grilled salmon special which was excellent, followed by coffee and dessert. Our friend's dessert arrived with a lighted birthday candle. The dinner was relaxing and flavorful, a real plus for a delightful evening. We will return again, as this was the second very enjoyable pre-theater dinner which we have had at Kuleto's in a year.

  • Wonderful, food and ambiance, not good service

The service we had was not good. Waiting long periods of time for the waiter to come back on several occasions, waiting for the first wine order, the appetizers, taking our plates (which was the busser). Received part of an entree (pasta) while the group was still eating appetizers and the waiter said it was so the entree came at the right time, not sure what that meant or why?? We had party of 5 with reservations at 8:30, we were late and the hostess accommodated us, which was very nice. The food was excellent. i said I would not recommend to others only because of the one waiter, I do not know his name. We had excellent service the time before.

This hotel restaurant is a lot better than you would expect for its age. Burrata starter was very tasty. Pasta was freshly made and perfectly cooked. Fillings and sauces were flavorful, without being overpowering. No room for dessert, to the Tiramisu will have to wait. Service was classy and timely, without getting in the way. A great Union Square choice for a late day of shopping or theater.

Kuleto's is my go to choice when attending a theater performance in San Francisco. I've enjoyed many lunches and dinners there and even had a private banquet for family there once. The food is sublime; the service is impeccable; the wine list is perfect; and it's a happening place. The prosciutto appetizer with pears, gorgonzola, candies walnuts, etc. is delicious (as all of their housemade salume are). The Hawaiian Yellow Fin Tuna is delicate, yet filled with so many flavors when you bite into it along with the ginger risotto and spinach with ponzu. Yum! I have to stop typing; my mouth is watering. Great job, Bob Helstrom! We love Kuleto's!

They kept trying to serve the salad before the appetizer. Waited almost 30 minutes for the appetizer which was the special of the day. Our server was very solicitous but couldn't seem to get the kitchen to cooperate. Our pasta was very dry. I believe it was an aberration since they heavily discounted our meal in apology. We have eaten there many times before and not had this kind of problem.

Living and working in San Francisco we usually avoid Union Sqaure on the weekends, heading to neighborhood restaurants or cooking at home. Last Friday we had an event downtown that started at 8pm, we had time for dinner before the show, great where to go. I asked my wife if she'd like to go to Kuletos. "Is it still there?" she said. Not only stll there but excellent food, although they no longer have the veal chop on the menu, everything from the first course to the last was exceptional, service was professional, and the prices reasonable. It is no further than a block away from several of the downtown parking garages. It is still as great as it was twenty years ago.

We always must dine here when we stay in the city. We usually opt to sit at the counter which isn't for everyone, but works for us. The show put on by the chefs is non- stop and very entertaining. We didn't order an appetizer or salad this time, but just an entrée each. My husband chose the pork medallions which sat on polenta cakes with a mustard based sauce and some type of green vegetable. I tasted it and would definitely order it as it was delicious and I'm not big on polenta. I ordered the pappardelle with duck ragu and it was excellent. The pasta melted in my mouth. We each ordered a glass of wine which paired with our meals, but now I can't remember what they were. One of our best meals during our stay!

Returned after a hiatus of several years, and was not disappointed. My wife had the veal scaloppine. The serving was generous, and the meat was tender and tasty. I had the special New York steak, which was also tender and tasty. We shared an excellent Caesar salad. Would recommend that one request seating in the dining room since the bar can be crowded and noisy.

Kuleto's is our special restaurant when visiting San Francisco. There are restaurants that are fancier maybe or more 'in', but the food, the service and the location all add up to an important tradition for us. We've been going for some 20+ years (unfortunately seldom more than three or four times a year, being that we live 6 hours away) and have never been disappointed. Wonderful wine selection, fresh salads, delicious entrees and I'm always ready to turn down dessert, but simply can't. Love Kuleto's

Nice place. Went with my 16 year old daughter before seeing a play. We both had very tasty pasta dishes. Portions were moderate, not too big and not too small. Very good flavors. Kuletos is an old SF standard. It's not a trendy place or a super high end place but it's somewhere between formal and casual. Just a good place if you want good Italian food, a nice environment and excellent service. You can spend a lot of money here but you can also get a quick relatively inexpensive dinner. (It's not cheap but it's appropriate for the food they serve.) Perfect for before the theater.

Kuleto's has excellent food and a lovely setting but the service was completely awful. As a party of 2, we waited 45 minutes from when we placed our order to get our appetizer which was a Salumi platter. People all around us were continuing to get their food even though they had ordered after us. When we asked multiple times where our food was, we were told that the chef that handles the salads and salumi platters was slammed, which didn't make much sense since some of the people getting their food were getting salads even though they had ordered after us! We think that maybe the chef didn't want to spend a time to lay the platter out, but I can't imagine that laying out about 20 slices of meat could take more than a couple minutes.

Interesting place. Service was spotty. You'll like the food if you believe olive oil is the be-all-and-end-all. Our food arrived quickly. But, after waiting 10 minutes after being seated for a server (with no drinks or water), we had to wait 5 minutes after our food arrived for the freshly grated Parmesan. Fettuccini Alfredo had homemade noodles- you could taste the difference from dry. The gnocchi was in a weird olive oil sauce that was soaked up by the dumplings, making them very heavy. Ravioli was tasty, but was literally bathed in said olive oil. A frustrating evening.

We have frequented Kuleto's .... Sat. night was NOT a nice experience. The minestrone soup was bitter and seemed to have all the leftovers from the night before thrown in (soggy broccoli). The Romaine salad was dry and the anchovies were clumped together in one bunch. My husbands' short ribs were dry and stringy. The tiramisu was fantastic as usual, but the whole bill was 200.00 and we were really disappointed. Our waiter didn't seem to care about our table...more concerned with getting the Giant's score. This will be our last time to go there. We only had one night in the City and there are so many terrific places to eat. We cheated ourselves by being loyal.
