Diner Reviews
  • "We gave walked by this restaurant a hundred times but this was our first time eating there. We had the duke and tomato salad which was delicicious and then we shared the lamb tagine. It literally fell off the bone. It was fresh and so tasty. We will definitely be back. Service was outstanding as well. "

  • "The eggplant appetizer was recommended by some friends and they nailed it, I would highly recommend it especially with the hot sauce. The place was fun and great food."

  • "This place is great--amazing food and service! We didn't get to sit on the floor, but it still felt authentically Moroccan. The Moroccan Kiss, beef kebabs, endive pockets, zaalouk, and vanilla/almond custard were fantastic!!!"

  • "My friend and I had a light dinner before the theatre. The service was exceptional! We shared a couple of appetizers and a tagine. It was all delicious! The atmosophere was very warm and exotic...we wished we'd had more time to relax, stay awhile and enjoy the whole experience."

  • "We chose Kous Kous to celebrate birthday with friends. It was a great experience that made the night even more special. The food was amazing and so flavorful. This was all of our first time eating there; however, it will definitely not be the last!"

  • "We were looking for an interesting alternative to the uber-modern, cool and chic restaurants that abound in San Diego for my birthday dinner. Wow, did we hit the jackpot. We LOVED Kous Kous from the moment we walked in. I'd go back just for the Chicken B'stila app. We plan to go back again on our next trip to SD. Score!"

  • "Our party of four had two vegetarians and two meat-eaters, and we all really enjoyed the variety and spice of the dishes. The Moroccan bread was new to me, and a pleasant novelty."

  • "Our server was lovely and very helpful. He played along with our request, it was a wonderful experience."

  • "I have always received great service and the food (especially the chicken tagine) and saffron rice are the best."

  • "I brought friends that never been to Kous Kous. I mentioned to them this restaurant is one of my favorites and you will feel romantic as you are in a foreign land. When we first arrived I noticed there was a big screen TV I never seen before playing The Roman Holiday. Since I was first to arrived and it was only 5:30 pm, I thought the staff was just enjoying relaxing before dinner serves. It ended playing all night repeatedly with Casa Blanca. The lights in the dining area was the brightest ever that I ever seen in Kous Kous. I used had needed some candle lights to read the menu, but I was fine with that because I love the ambiance. The female server that took order never smiles and with a bit of attitude."

  • "The couscous salad was delicious and the Berber Lamb Shank Tagine was highly recommended and true to its testimonials was amazing!! The only thing that I didn't care for was the Sangria, it had some sort of strange undertone of ginger, or saffron. But that was probably just me. Everything was great!!"

  • "This place is awesome, everyone must check it out!"

  • "I cheated. I read the reviews and took the suggestion to order the B'stila roll. It's was a nice mix of savory, sweet & crispyness to start off our meal. We moved on to beef skewers. The serving came as two skewers of juicy, tender cuts of beef over saffron rice. So far my hubby & I are two for two. We decide to split a Berber lamb shank tangine and ask for a side of garlic mashed potatoes. We had no use for a knife. The delicious dish served with a side of saffron rices fell off the bone and the roasted veggies could also be easily cut with a fork. I enjoyed a Moroccan Kiss during my dinner which complemented the spicy Harissa condiment. A perfect meal we are looking forward to returning!"

  • "Kous Kous is a gem in Hillcrest. Tucked down a stairway on 4th this resturant offers personality and simple class over the ultra hip and somewhat cheesey resturants that line 5th avenue. Food is simple and impactful as the dishes focus on the regional flavors that are found in Morroco. A great place for Vegitarians as 90% of the appitizers are vegi based and a great deal of them vegan as well. Waitstaff are super friendly and happy to explain any dishes. Drink list is not to be missed as well as floral flavors collide with herbal teas to create memorable elixers. Couches and tables line the dining area giving it a feel as if your in sombody's living room. A romatic feel to the whole thing. I can't wait to go back."

  • "The food was fantastic! The service equally great. We had the special meal for two which included a handful of items from the menu. From the appetizer to the main course.....fantastic! We will be back."

  • "I 'll start with Ambience: Tried to give it a different look with mic and match of whatever they got on pawn shop. Chairs with torn seat cusion, backrest showing inside foam, not great smelling also. Shady... Service - Not exceptionally bad but the attitude of the waiter was not good for service industry and time to get anything was extra extra long. Even to get the bill after we were done eating was ~20 minutes. Food - I have not seen so much floating oil in any food ever. I could not eat main course tagine, it is just full of oil, I am not kidding. Not coated with oil but floating in oil. I eat oily indian food also but this is possibly 10 times more oil. Smell and taste wasnt great either. I am never ever going there again."

  • "Its OK in all categories but not great. Having travelled to Morocco the chicken tagine was OK but not memorable. Couldn't really taste the preserved lemons nor were there any visible in the dish. Service was polite but waiter had a constant nasal drip that was annoying.I couldn't find any of the #2 categories above that applied, but it was still OK."

  • "The restaurant has a great layout. Looks small and charming, but with tables set up in unique places it feels intimate and private when dining. The staff is amazingly nice and attentive. The ambiance is so great! I loved the colorful furniture and lamps that hang from the ceiling. One side of the restaurant looks good for groups and the other side seems more intimate for 2-4 person tables. Definitely recommended. Great vegetarian options, we really enjoyed the tapas."

  • "The meat was real gamy and it has a funny taste. I have been to Morocco and I never tasted anything like this."

  • "The service was outstanding. The food was very good. The beef tagines were less flavorful than I expected. Chicken kabobs, salads, and appetizers were excellent. The next time I will try some new dishes. I reiterate that the service was excellent."

  • "First times trying Moroccan food it was new but good very great restaurant to take your wife or significant other"

  • "The food was good but it was pricey.we went on valentines day, so it could have been pricier because of that. Taste of the items overall was good. Having eaten Morrocan food in other restaurants, I believe this food was almost there in quality and taste. service was good with energetic manager and waiters."

  • "We booked through open table for Valentines Day and had their set menu. Given that it was high volume perhaps they were off their game. Service was good. The ambiance was romantic. The setting is Morrocan but not over the top. Given that I am a belly dancer I would have liked more color. he music was not Morrocan but a mix of world music. The appetizer was tasty, the bistilla, moist. The main dishes were edible but left much to be desired in authentic Morrocan flavor. I couldn't discern the lemon, ginger, coriander or other spices. The flavors were a bit muddy. The seafood tagine was heavy on the pepper and the lamb was bland. If you are looking for ambiance this is the place. If you're looking for authenticity this isn't it."

  • "The atmosphere is very friendly and thoughtful; they reproduced quite well a Moroccan atmosphere with particular attention to details. The music is mesmerizing. Overall the food is very tasty. The dishes are somewhat original where the traditional ingredients are sometimes replaced with local and seasonal produces. The service is praisable especially during the week. The only minus is the desserts that are, to my taste, too "westernized" and are not reflecting the great diversity of Moroccan and North African pastry tradition."

  • "I have been to Kous Kous a half dozen times. I often order the chicken tagine. Tried a few appetizers last time. The food, ambience and service has always been gret."

  • "From the second we walked in, we felt welcome by a very attentive maitre'd.... We had asked for quiet, away from loud group... However, the food and the service made up for the fact we couldn't hear each other across the table. OMG, the waiter was so spot on, the food came quickly and was beyond outstanding and we were able to quickly ignore the overty loud party right next to us (that was not the restaurants fault. Some adults don't know how to use inside voices especially when drinking!LOL! ) Next time I will call to make sure no large parties have reserved a table if I want a more intimate, conversational opportunity. I am a professional best-selling author with a huge fan base, and I am definately referring Kous Kous to my local peeps!"

  • "This is an amazing place with respect to its ambience, great cuisine, and quite refreshing cocktails... You definitely get the feel of coming over to a true moroccan place with its specific ambience and music collection... I would recommend all to check out their lamb chops and their lamb berber tagine... they are just out of the block... The best part of this place is it is as good a place for meat lovers as well as vegetarians..."

  • "Kous Kous has a relaxing ambiance and outstanding traditional Moroccan dishes. The tagines are always done to perfection but my favorite is the Chicken kabobs with the traditional Cous Cous side. A great place to bring your favorite vegetarian! You must order appetizers; for a first time experience the mixed sampler is a good way to go but I have quickly decided that I can't get enough of the Zaalouk (roasted cumin spiced eggplant spread) on warm pita. Be sure to ask for the complimentary Moroccan carrots. Getting there at 6 to 6:30 will guarantee a very quiet dining experience but as the night gets later the crowds start appearing."

  • "It was my first time dining here with my boyfriend. None of us has ever tried Moroccan food before. We ordered Fassi Lamb Shank Tagine & Beef Kabob for our main dishes. It was DELICIOUS! We loved the texture of the filet mignon & how it was cooked just right, and the lamb was well cooked. The honey sauce of the lamb dish was amazingly good! It served a great dipping and add-on sauce for us, especially for my boyfriend as well. The restaurant is located downstairs, and there is a small lounge inside. It is a small restaurant but has a romantic feel to it. It's pricey, but we'll definitely come back again to try other dishes. Highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to try Moroccan food."

  • "Tried this place based on yelp reviews and my fondness for lamb and Mediterranean food. We were not disappointed the Tianjins were excellent, good appetizers and wine list.. The decor is great as it has a feel of exotic Middle East. Cheers!"

  • "Been here a number of times and never been disappointed. I should say I always get the same thing the Moroccan feast II. The cocktails are also interesting & inventive. 1 glitch at some tables there is a closed has and you cannot get your legs under the table."

  • "This hidden gem was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant is fairly small but privacy is cleverly created using drapes. You will not find cookie cutter tables and chairs but a variety of ornate chairs and benches, colorful pillows and a variety of colorful lanterns casting a soft glow over the room. The food was flavorful with intriging spices but not overwhelming. We shared the eggplant and pita tapas - delicious. My husband ordered the beef kebabs, which were abundant and tender, while I enjoyed the vegetable tagine, which was VERY good. Again both had lots of flavorful spices but it was subtle and both were accompanied by light, fluffy rice. All staff were very warm and pleasant."
