Diner Reviews
  • "Our service was outstanding, the filet that was ordered was ordered mid rare and came out mid well. The server was more than apologetic. Notified a manager and a manager never came by or was offered to cook filet over. I am a manager at a high end steakhouse and the lack of follow up by management was jarring, especially on the Plaza."

  • "This is my 2nd time going there and it's absolutely amazing! The food was delicious! I would highly recommend reservations because of how busy it gets."

  • "Made reservations, because it was friday nite. We did get seated at our reservatrion time. Food was very good . Service was scetchy probably because the Chefs were working as hard and fast as they could go, but the waitress was congenial and apolagetic . It made the wait acceptable."

  • "Serves the best food I have eaten in the Plaza area."

  • "We enjoyed dining at Kona during our stay in KC. The food was delicious and the wait staff excellent. The manager stopped by our table to chat."

  • "From the service to the food, Kona was impressive. This was my first time having sushi and I loved it! The busy atmosphere told me as soon as I walked in that this was a popular restaurant. The servers and management are very friendly and attentive. If you want to try sushi or are already a fan, go to Kona! I know I'll be back."

  • "We went to have a meal with less ambient noise. With even being put as far back into the establishment as possible the bar and sidewalk noise was a distraction. Understand that it was Big 12 Tournament time; it still wasn’t an enjoyable time for those who were after a different environment. It was clear that the main focus was on the loud basketball crowd, not the quite dinner crowd. Can't recommend for a quit meal based on our experience."

  • "My best friend and I have our girls night a Kona every month. It is always wonderful and this past Friday was no exception! Our waitress, Timber was fantastic - energetic, personable, and on top of her game. We love the energy and atmosphere and of course the food. This time out we tried the Checkerboard Roll and the Steak & Lobster Roll. They were amazing. Thanks for a fantastic dinner and night out."

  • "My friend and I went to Kona Grill for the great half price happy hour items. Turns out they are only half price if you sit either at the bar or the sushi bar. We wanted a more quiet space, away from the 20-somethings at the bar. So we ended up paying full price because it was more important for us to truly enjoy our dining experience and be able to hear each other's conversation. Kona is great, love the food and the service. But the online menu really should state happy hour prices apply only to certain sections of the restaurant."

  • "Ordered the Soft Shell Crab Roll , Crab Crunch Roll and the Dragon Roll. All with Soy wrap and no cucumbers. Soft Shell Crab roll came with what tasted like algea wrap inside and the soy wrap was outside the roll. Both the Crab Crunch Roll and the Dragon Roll had cucumbers inside. 3 out of 3 wrong. Server came by once to see how things were. As i had food in my mouth, my daughter told him it was "ok" and he left. Also had gnats flying around the table. Not a good impression at all. Both my daughter and I commented that it defintely was not worth coming back for."

  • "Took my wife here the day after V-day. Chad was our server (ask for him). Probably the best service I've had in a year. The mngr stopped by and talked to us too. They both offered excellent suggestions. Sometimes wait staff tend to offer generic advice but these guys were great, customizing our order. We've eaten at the top sushi restaurant in the US, and this visit surpassed it. Super impressed. We'll see you in a few weeks for my B-day."

  • "My wife and I had an amazing night on Friday. The food was great, the atmosphere was great, the service was great. Could not have asked for a better evening. Will be back for sure. May have found our new favorite place to eat. Thanks again,"

  • "My boyfriend and I went to Kona Grill for Valentine's Day dinner. Our reservation was for 8pm. We sat in the bar for about 15 minutes while we wait washed for our table, and we were seated at 8 exactly. The bar staff was friendly and attentive. We ordered drinks, kinda pricey. Our server was really friendly. We had the avocado egg roll...delicious! We both ordered sushi rolls, they came out fast considering it was a holiday.. and all 3 rolls were great! Would definitely recommend this place!"

  • "Exceptional food & wine. Sushi bar is great and their jambalya was fantastic. A little noisey if your booth is near the bar area. Great spot for your adults. Service was excellent as well."

  • "Food was an excellent selection for restaurant week. Okra in the jambalaya would have put it over the top. Rice on the sushi was a bit dry."

  • "Sorry to say, I don't visit the Kona Grill often, and our dinner the other night won't get me to come back. The restaurant was busy on a Saturday night, which is great for them, but the full space makes it very loud. The server recommended cocktails that 'weren't too sweet', but really were too sweet. The Spicy Tuna roll was very good, and the Tuna entree was also good as was the Key Lime Pie. The portions were huge, which is not a plus in my book. We could have split all of the above and been very full. Instead, we took home enough food for two more meals. We were in and out in less than an hour, feeling rushed the entire evening."

  • "My wife and I always enjoy going to Kona Grill for the delicious sushi, salads, entrees, dessert and of course drinks. We go for special occasions and come away with great things to say about the food and the special service we receive. We enjoyed the specials we had during "Restaurant Week"."

  • "We were looking for someplace different to go in Kansas City at the Plaza... Saturday nights are really loud. I don't have any hearing problems, but you could barely hear the person on the other side of the table. Don't go here if you are looking for anything but a hip bar scene. We had the almond encrusted pork and the macadamian encrusted chicken. They were good, but considering the breading is very salty, the mashed potatoes that they served were even more salty. I felt like a horse! Food is good, but not wow... so ok to try, but maybe on another evening if you are going with someone you care to talk to. The inside of the restaurant is very beautiful, but the food was just good not great."

  • "the waiter was good even though he was overloaded with work. there was a big party next us that he was having to help with as well as us but he did a good of taking care of us and gave us an extra treat at the end. Food was wonderful."

  • "Fun place to go, lively with some great food items, with a seafood emphasis. A bit loud on a weekend and typical booth/table seating, but very nice staff. Had reservation and they even took us early when we arrived."

  • "The VooDoo Rolls are a must try. I order them every time I go and then change up the entree. Great restaurant with predictable quality. Our service was good just a little slow."

  • "While I love fish, my wife does not. Kona Grill has a surprisingly diverse menu with outstanding non-fish selections. Sushi and sashimi are fresh and firm. Rolls (California, spring, etc) are very fresh and authentic. The pork dish was generous. Wonderful place for dinner. Very noisy, but the accommodations, while contemporary and stylish are also tight. Fun young adult bar scene. Wouldn't change it, but for older folks, table conversation can be a challenge. Would love to see the Happy Hour special extended beyond the bar (again, older patrons would enjoy the selection, but have no interest in standing and fighting for a bar chair), but understand why it isn't."

  • "We went for their late-night (10pm>) weeknight happy hour, which had a great selection of wines and modestly-priced sushi compared to other sushi restaurants in the area. Their flatbreads on the HH menu are good as well. Steven was a great, energetic server!"

  • "I enjoyed my experience here. I have had their sushi before, but this time went for the Pad Thai. I like that they have a variety of things on their menu. We went on Christmas Eve and enjoyed the atmosphere. This is a great place for a nice dinner or a happy hour with friends."

  • "We were celebrating my birthday. Our wait staff was very friendly - I'm sure our son (young adult) being with us was the reason the hostess and waitresses lingered. The sushi was very good. The entrees were good, but not fantastic. The service was very rushed, with each subsequent course arriving before the previous course was even half consumed. Consequently, the entrees had cooled too much by the time we were ready to eat them. The desserts were good, but larger than necessary. It was still a good evening and I would recommend eating here, but without high expectations."

  • "Kona Grill has a diverse menu featuring sushi, fresh fish, creative sandwiches and adapted island fare. Prices range from modest to expensive. It is a good choice for folks with different likes/dislikes as there is something to please almost everyone. The sound level is on the high side making conversation with your table partners a challenge. Desserts were really good and large enough to share. Reservations are highly recommended as it was packed when we we there."

  • "Kona has decent sushi. It's not the best I've ever had and it's a little overpriced but that's to be expected for the location. Their happy hour is a great deal, though. They have some pretty awesome cocktails and great specials."

  • "I made reservations 45 minutes before we were to arrive and they even seated us right away when we got there. The food was superb. We had a sunshine roll, sushi sampler, and caterpillar roll. To drink? I had a fabulous, unforgettable strawberry basil lemonade (alcoholic). My partner had a mojito, it was the only unfortunate part of the meal, as it was too sour and required a few packets of sugar that I scored from a lovely server who stopped everything to grab us them. Our server was blonde and awesome. Though we waited a little for her, it was no bother. She also asked us if the wait had been long and checked on us frequently there after. In terms of cuisine, those sushi rolls were layered and layered with flavor. Go eat there. Now."
