The grilled sea bass was fresh and cooked perfectly with a great char flavor from the fire. The lamb shank was tender and braised perfectly. For desert, we enjoyed the lemon curd tarts with house made pistachio ice cream and a nice Madeira. Jeff, our server, was friendly and attentive without being intrusive or hovering. The wait staff was very attentive. Probably the only thing was a recommendation for one of the specials over what my daughter was prepared to order. It wasn't that it was not good, but it wasn't to her taste like the entree she was going to have. I can't fault anyone since we all have different likes. The most memorial part of the meal was when I had to tell my sister to stop complaining about work and taste the baklava. She loved it and it trancended the previous conversation. It was stunning. For dinner we had the roasted pork and lamb shank over orzo. Lastly, our cocktails were to die for. 3 days before, Kokkari called to confirm. I confirmed.
The day of, Kokkari called again - do I really have 8 people? Yes, I sure do.
Our entire party arrived 15 minutes early.
Yet 20 minutes *after* the reservation, we were still waiting. Only vague responses from staff. Then a party of ten came in ..and we saw staff prepping a table for them....shrugs for us.
It took some NYC-style elbowing on our part to get the host staff to seat our party prior to the 10-top. I'm not sure we'd have been seated otherwise.
Once seated everything was lovely. I'd go back for the food and ambiance. He had made the suggestion of Kokkari but has never eaten there, By the time we had finished appetizers he wondered why he hadn't. The duck and chicken were outstanding and the appetizer special fava beans was out of this world. I am a lover of rice pudding and this was one of the best. The meal was greatly complimented by the excellent Chablis.
Most interesting was the waiter who owned a property in Maine, where we are from. I love the lamb but got a chance to taste the oven roasted fish and it was to DIE FOR. The servers are very helpful in giving their opinions on what wine would best suit the dish. My friend had the rotisserie, which was lamb on that particular day, and I had the chicken. I usually cannot stand the taste of lamb but it was phenomenal. The service was fantastic but the food was even better. We ordered some mezza for starter and it was so good we ordered extra, the waiter had to tell us that we wouldnt have room for our dinners. I had the steak for main and my husband had the lamb, it was all succulent, with lots and lots of flavour and juices. The wine list was extensive and they even had a great variety by the glass. The wine prices were more than double those at La Folie, where we'd eaten earlier in the week. We started with the grilled octopus, which was so tender and perfectly prepared. We followed by sharing the grilled whole fish as we always do and the rotisserie of the day which was Berkshire Pork. Wow. Two wonderful dishes. Both are simply prepared in order to enhance the flavours of the food. We followed up with Galaktoboureko for dessert which was a perfect way to end the meal. Service was outstanding throughout the evening, and our meal at Kokkari was the best of our recent stay in San Francisco. The food was amazing, especially their appetizers like Gigantes and Kalamata Pita. For the main dish, I had the heavy Makaronia. It's not what I expected and that is a good thing. I also had a couple bites of their lamb which was also the best lamb I have ever eaten. Service was good and could be better. On the other hand, I did come in on a busy Easter night.
