A word from Kokkari Estiatorio
Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love.   • "We had an early reservation (6:15). The hostess was very pleasant and we were seated promptly. We were in the back dining room, where it seems to be a little cooler because you are away from the fireplace where the food is being spit roasted. The staff was spot on, very familiar with the menu and service couldn't have been better. Then there was the food. Excellent. Everything was wonderful. The lamb chops are fab and the wood-fired fish was perfect. Although we did order main courses, I could have been happy just having appetizers. Couldn't have had a lovelier experience."

  • "Everything was excellent except that our guest was made to wait for 15 or 20 minutes before bringing brought to our table. The maître d' had our name (it was on our reservation ) and we gave him our guest's name. He assured us that he would bring her to our table as soon as she arrived. She was caught in the shuffle, apparently and we had to go looking for her after waiting for half an hour. That was the only downside to the meal. But it was unfortunate because our guest had traveled a considerable distance to meet us at this restaurant."

  • "We wish this restaurant had come to our attention sooner. We can't wait to go back. Three of us shared 4 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 3 desserts for 3 people & were well fed. We enjoyed the roasted lamb and the raviolis (with mushrooms) which were cooked to perfection. The watermelon appetizer with Feta cheese and pine nuts was even enjoyed by one of us who doesn't care for watermelon. Even the drinks were perfect! The ambience is very cozy yet also sophisticated. Our waiter, Max, presented with just the right amount of attentiveness. We live out of the immediate area or we would return right away. The evening was well worth the price!"

  • "Every time I eat here I fall more and more in love. The food is authentic, delicious, and high quality. The presentation of everything is wonderful. I ordered a cocktail before sitting down and the bartender was a little stuffy, but that's really the only negative, and even then, who cares? Daria is fabulous. She's waited on me multiple times and I highly recommend asking for her as a server. She's very knowledgeable about the menu, friendly yet professional, and is always at the table when you need her, no matter how busy she is. Between spectacular food and some of the best service I've ever had, the ambiance really tops it all off. It's pricy (easy to spend $200 on dinner for 2), but worth every last penny."

  • "Wonderful place to go for a special occasion- warm, inviting atmosphere, welcoming and professional staff, great selection of delicious dishes and wine. Just walking through the dining rooms you can sense the enthusiasm people are feeling for their individual experience. Reminds you of what fine dining was like before it became so trendy and "style over substance". The owners have a good sense of how to provide a wonderful evening- and they deliver. A little more pricey than I would like- but probably no surprise to someone looking to spend alittle more for a special occasion- not exorbitant. The fact that every table was filled with happy people as we left on a Saturday evening at 10:00, is a good indication of how good the place is-"

  • "We were glad to have an Open Table reservation as this place filled up quickly around us as we changed our 12:15 pm reservation to 11:30 am as our schedule permitted arriving when Kokkari opened. Monday taverna mussel special was an easy choice, served with grilled bread to sop up the tasty sauce, and did not disappoint. The smelt starter was generous, served with garlicky Skordalia purée. The waiter revealed chickpea flour and soy oil preparation was the secret to the light, miraculously virtually greaseless fried smelt. Lamb riblets were tasty as was eggplant 'melitzanosalata' with pita bread. Kokkari for lunch was more pleasant and quiet than the Palo Alto sister restaurant Evvia, where tasty food is also served."

  • "I have been wanting to go to Kokkari for several years. We live in the East Bay, and it is not super convenient. However, when my husband asked me where I wanted to eat for my birthday, the restaurant came immediately to mind. It was a lovely finale to a great day in the city. We were greeted warmly by the receptionist, who immediately wished me a happy birthday. We were quickly seated in the front room. Our head waiter, Max, was engaging and his suggestions did not disappoint. Wait staff was attentive without being intrusive. We decided to order only appetizers (about 9). Favorites were the zucchini cakes, grilled artichoke and eggplant, grilled calamari, and grilled octopus. Yogurt dessert and Greek coffee yummy too!"

  • "This was our first visit to Kokkari, and it didn't disappoint. Kind of a rustic chic decor that we enjoyed very much. Food was innovative in preparation and presented beautifully. Waiter was efficient, paid attention, and had a personality. One problem that turned into a favorable outcome - we were initially seated at what I would consider the worst table in the restaurant immediately adjacent to the waiters kiosk, so at times we had three butts facing us. After 10 minutes I went back to the hostess stand and politely registered my complaint. The restaurant was busy as always, but they made swift work of finding us another table without any complaint. I suspect we weren't first to complain about this table. Nevertheless a 5-star result."

  • "Great Greek salad. Had the chicken kabob -- and it was really overdone and dry. I'm a regular, so this was disappointing. I probably should have selected the lamb dishes, which always seems to be the best. The half chickens on Fridays should be offered every day because it has less chance of being overdone on a spit roaster, and it's FABULOUS. My partner really enjoyed all the appetizers."

  • "This place would not even be in my top 50 places in the Bay Area. Lamb chops were Luke warm. The strawberry pudding was unedible as it was totally drenched in syrup. The roasted beets was smothered in a cream sauce. Overdone How this has gotten good reviews is surprising."

  • " I am part Greek and familiar with the food. I invited my friend to try Greek food. We had five appetizers and shared an entree and dessert. They were so bland. The dolmas had no flavor, it was like eating dry mint on it's own. The baked cheese was covered with red peppers, capers and tasted awful. The spanakopitas had barely any filing and over baked... The greens that came with the fish had the stems attached and they tasted boiled than sautéed. The baklava was even worse, my tongue burnt from the cloves and cinnamon and the filo was burnt, we did not finish. I Paid almost $200.00 for what I considered one of the worst meals I've had. I was so embarrassed that i took my friend there, and apologized repeatedly. Never again. Hated it."

  • "I go to Kokkari as often as I can, because it is such a special place. I feel well taken care of every time I go. Food is fantastic, ambience is welcoming and comfortable. I look forward to going there in the early summer, especially, because it is squash blossom season. They prepare this delicate seasonal ingredient so well. I have had this dish at other restaurants but no places does better than Kokkari. I will be looking for another excuses to go back soon!"

A few dishes missed the spot a little bit (mushroom stack just tasted way to earthy...), but overall would recommend. Like that it is owned by 3 brothers and sits in a cool area, also you can just walk down to Valencia Street for some night-life with bars etc."

  • "We enjoyed their lamb burgers at lunch and they could not have been tastier though my companion and I could have easily shared one burger. We were quite satisfied after 1/2 our meal. We also thoroughly enjoyed the zuccini cakes and the yummy fresh dolmas. It felt like a place to be seen. We also thoroughly enjoyed a Greek white wine which was recommended by our waiter."

  • "Kokkari has been around for quite a while, but it is still a first class dining experience. The food is delicious, and the restaurant prides itself on the fresh ingredients that are flown in from Greece. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. Because the restaurant is still extremely popular, the noise level can get pretty high, but my companion and I were still able to converse. Our server was knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly--just the right mixture of warmth and professionalism. This is a restaurant that has managed to maintain its high standards over a period of several years. It's wonderful to go back to a place after a long absence to find that it is every bit as good as you remembered."

  • "We had been recommended to Kokkari by a long time resident of SF and it did not disappoint. The octopus and prawn appetizers were full of flavour and a proper appetizer portion. The lamb chops and lamb skewer were both delicious. If I had any complaint it was that the table for 2 people were too close together as they seemed to be trying to use every possible inch of floor space."

  • "It's hard to think of this as a "greek" restaurant. Rather, think of it as very fine food with a Greek/Mediterranean influence. Very efficient service, a wonderful room with great energy, it's an overall wonderful and fun place to have an excellent dinner. Make sure and look into the rotisserie special of the day that comes out of the fire pit.....outstanding pork shoulder when I was there.."

  • "The decor of the place is quite beautiful with lots of seating available and an earthen-ware kitchen quality vibe. The yogurt and sweet beets was fresh and delicious. The slow rotisserie lamb was perfectly cooked as well as the potatoes. There wasn't too much salt or sugar in the meal. The dessert was mint yogurt with strawberry sorbet and was a knock-out. It was so well balanced that the mouth waters extra with each mouthful. Those living in San Francisco have a good place to go to. Being from Canada the prices are outstanding for this type of restaurant and quality. Highly recommended!"

I made my reservation for 09:30. I was seated at 09:50. The manager talked with me twice, excusing by delay to seat us. Due to that, they did not charge any appetizer and entrees we ordered.   • "The chef uses the classic Greek palate of flavors but updates the dishes to make use of fresh and seasonal ingredients. The result is delicious food with over the top flavors. The seafood was perfectly fresh and seasoned but not smothered so that the flavors come through. The fresh squash blossoms and the porcini mushrooms out of the wood burning oven were outstanding. Don't miss out on the giant beans, such a simple dish but bursting with flavor. Our waiter was attentive but did not rush us through our meal. He also was very knowledgeable about the dishes and was able to help with recommendations. I recommend going with a group so that you can taste more of the small plates."

  • "The noise level is usually quite high on a Saturday night but quite pleasant last night despite a full house. The garlic puree on the smelts were not as thrillingly garlicky as on previous visits- we hope this is not a permanent change. Everything else was, as usual, very good."
