Koi has excellent, extremely fresh
tasting sushi. They also have an extensive menu, which interestingly includes the regions the food items come from. If you like spicy food, they have a wonderful selection, if not, there is plenty to choose form also!"

Even the waiter noted how pricey
the (creative but average tasting) sushi is getting at this respected restaurant. Why do so many choices include cilantro and cream cheese? They better take a hard look at the quality of their food (noticed a hair on one plate) prep and prices, as there are increasingly equal or better choices for asian cuisine. This has been one of my favorites for years, but I can't support it given the direction it is heading."

We've been here about 3 times.
This time the food was great as usual. However, our service was slow. Took a long time for our waitress to initally come to the table, a long time to get our drinks, a long time to get our food. Mine was not hot and my friends food came about 5 to 10 minutes after the rest of us at the table (this didn't seem like a big deal to our waitress). When 2 couples share dinner and one doesn't have their food it's kind of glaring. Maybe it was just a fluke this night. We will go again!"

This was our first time at Koi.
The menu was very extensive and reasonably priced. We had a variety of rolls, sushi and entrees and each was great. Our waiter was able to make great recommendations as well. We will be going back."

As always the food at Koi is
excellent, that's one of the reasons why we keep returning The other is valet parking - we seldom go to many other restaurants in Evanston, particularly in the winter, as where can one park?? But, as always the service is not so great - waiters slow & the excuse "the kitchen is backed up" is heard every single time we have been here. Granted it is always during the dinner hours, but always?? Yes, always "the kitchen is backed up'!!"

we went to Koi this last Saturday
night , ordered and then waited and hour and a half for our food...the waitress apologized and offered free desserts which we were not interested in. I spoke to the manager to say how unhappy we were that and hour and a half went by and we had edamame only. When we received the check he had deducted 20%..which I felt was inadequate at best...I replied I felt that this was not really much considering the wait time. I will not be back."

I'm surprised by how weak the
service is at Koi. I love the food and atmosphere, but from the bar to the dining room, I find the service slow, inattentive and occasionally a little unfitnedly. And I have been to this restaurant about 20 times. The manager is friendly to the point of over doing it. I actually don't want to talk to the manager, I want to talk with my waiter or bartender and have them care about me. I just don't ever get that sense at Koi. We waited for a long time to order, and then between check backs. I don't usually write reviews of restaurants but I felt compelled here because there is something that just doesn't work about the service while the rest of the package is excellent."

Koi has the best Chinese food I
have ever had. We had Shrimp Dumplings as a starter, General Tao's Chicken/Beef combination, Walnut Shrimp and Chocolate Lava Cake for desert. Not only was each item flavored perfectly but they were served beautifully with a unique presentation. It was nice to not have the traditional plating of a white platter with a silver lid, as it is in most Chinese restaurants. I only wish I lived closer as driving an hour + for dinner is not something i do frequently. However, this will be my restaurant of choice whenever I am in the Evanston area for lunch or dinner."

I went with 5 other friends for a
celebration and all of us enjoyed our food. The service was great too. Our waiter knew the menu well, was funny and attentive. We will all be back soon!"

The food was excellent and the
service was good. We will return and will recommend KOI to others."

My dining partners and I, 4 people
in total, all agreed that this was the very best meal any of us have had in quite some time. I can't speak for the other couple but my husband and I dine out very often, almost daily, and we loved Koi. Furthermore, we have a myriad of food restrictions and Koi gladly and hospitably accommodates our requests. We recommend the vegetarian potstickers. We loved that Koi serves Asian food from many regions of the Far East so we could each satisfy our food preferences! Each of our contacts, from the gentleman that phoned me to confirm our reservation to the waitstaff, were friendly and polite, respectful of our time frame and needs."
Dined on 1/25/2014
Our server was very pleasant and
didn't rush our meal (which is my biggest pet peeve when dining out at busy restaurants on weekend nights) In fact, we tipped her generously and she made a point to come back to the table to thank us for it, which was not expected by us of course, but very kind nonetheless. That said, all of our food was delicious....including the fun martini selection and dessert!! Koi never disappoints!!"

I understand that it was New
Year's Eve, but noise was a bit much. Food made up for it."
Dined on 12/31/2013
Realizing that restaurants that
are opened on Christmas Day are mostly Asian, Koi proved a good choice for our late lunch. Large and diverse menu, ample portions and no one rushed us! The only thing was we had a reservation for 2:45pm but all food had to be ordered before 3pm as the kitchen closes for an hour and a half. Luckily we got there a little early and skipped the chit chat until we had ordered. Was a positive experience and would eat there again."
Dined on 12/25/2013
It's been years since we've been
to Koi and we were really looking forward to eating there again since we remembered the good being excellent. We were really disappointed with almost all of the dishes. The description of the seafood soup sounded delicious, but it was not good at all. Four people are it, none liked it. The rest of the dishes were nothing special and really no better than average. Really disappointing. And, it took forever to receive our food after we ordered. I think it took almost an hour! Again, really disappointing. I don't think we'll be going back anytime soon."
Dined on 12/25/2013
We were there on Christmas. The
maître d was unpleasant. The food was good but the speed of food delivery was terrible. We waited for more than an hour for food. We have been there on other holidays and haven't had this problem."
Dined on 12/25/2013
We have dined here many times and
have never been disappointed. The sushi creations are imaginative and delicious. The service is impeccable as well. Keep up the good work! Can't wait to go back!"

Six people and we all enjoyed it
very much...great choices in all major food types...great support from chef in working with all food allergies and preferences...good pricing...helpful suggestions .:u"

We would pay serious money for
them to deliver to Glenview. Can't get anything this good near us :("

Wonderful Variety of Asian food.
All well prepared and flavorful. Ambience is good. Noise was not a problem. We had previously gone to a great place in Vernon Hills, but that closed and this is our new go to place. Highly recommend for a comfortable and enjoyable experience"

The salmon was slightly overdone,
but other than that, all was perfection!"

We were really surprised by the
quality and taste, service was excellent , will go there again and recommend to friend, this is the first time that zagat failed me with their ratings"

I have been here countless times
and it never disappoints. I tend to get the generals chicken but substitute the spicy wing sauce. Trust me, u will not be disappointed."
Dined on 11/15/2013
The Asian food is the best in
Evanston. Top quality. A little too noisy for pleasant conversation, though."
Dined on 11/2/2013
We have been to Koi many times and
will go back again. They have an excellent selection of sushi as well as Chinese dishes which makes it a great place if you are feeling like some sushi but someone you are with doesn't. The food is great and the presentation is especially nice. The downside is and has always been the service. Generally slow. They are both under staffed in my opinion and the Chinese dishes come from one kitchen and sushi from another. This often results in the sushi coming out at one time and Chinese at another time. This last time we were there people who ordered sushi were done before the Chinese arrived. They gave us a free appetizer and dessert which was nice but its not the first time it has happened to us."
Dined on 11/1/2013
I went to Koi for the first time
and loved it. We ate in the front room by Davis St., but there were other rooms that we didn't see that might have had a different vibe. The food was superb, and the server was attentive but very patient. My friend and I stayed for a long time, and they never pushed us to order or to leave. They were very knowledgeable, and we had a great experience. I would go back and order as many different foods as I could since I have a feeling everything is great. It was a little noisy, though, but we were still able to talk one on one."
Dined on 10/19/2013
Have eaten at Koi many times, and
it is always excellent. The menu includes sushi, a variety of Chinese cuisines, and some Thai. I have never been disappointed. Also good for carry-out food. I ordered Dover sole with vegetables, and it was so mouth-watering! The vegetables were crisp and and the sole was soft and delicate. It was my birthday, and I had received a $10 discount in email. They also gave me a free dessert-simple but tasty. They also have a good wine list. If you think there isn't any good Chinese food to be found, try Koi."
Dined on 10/19/2013
Restaurant was expected to be full
but service fell short. Examples: cocktails came at end of meal. Sushi came late."
Dined on 10/18/2013
The sushi is top notch, the
Chinese is superb, the service was excellent. We arrived late because of difficult parking near the restaurant and construction directly outside Koi. The hostess was sweet and asked if we had any food allergies and whether we were celebrating a special event, nice start. We then ordered some Miso soup, which was excellent, not too salty with a nice amount of seaweed and tofu. Pan-fried dumplings followed. A little doughy but nice flavor. An excellent sushi roll (Sakura, I think) followed by my favorite dish at Koi, the walnut shrimp. Huge shrimp in a sweet mayo based sauce w sweet walnuts, pea-pods and carrot and a combo fried rice with large amounts of shrimp, beef and chicken. Outstanding !!!"

The food is always excellent.
Presentation beautiful. Inventive menu. It never disappoints."
Dined on 10/15/2013
Good fresh fish, liked the maki
rolls, especially the warm one. Good cocktail selections too. Especially nice in the summer when they open the windows."
Dined on 10/12/2013
loved the bao and the spring rolls
as appetizers. Have had the dumplings as well and all are excellent. the sesame chicken and sesame tofu were outstanding, we loved them. also had the brocolli with scallops and the 3 mushroom stir fry. everything was excellent. the tempura banana and cream puff desserts are not to be missed. place can be noisy when it is full, sometimes tough to have a conversation across the table. highly recommend Koi."
Dined on 10/11/2013
Not a single dish came out as
advertised. No garlic in the "Garlic Prawns." Sea Bass tough, tasteless and chewy and $35! Edemame over salted. Rice cold. String beans cold. Service spotty. Rather than reducing the bill, the manager gave us a coupon to be used on a return visit which will NEVER happen. A once great place was a total disappointment."
