Diner Reviews
  • "Made reservations on opentable & placed in comment box for highchair (that was not done) .Went there for lunch and order the one lunch special which includes soup/sushi/ dish. Sushi came after the dish was finished.... The menu is too large for them to handle (included dim sum) they were out of stuff. Again service for lunch time shouldn't be like this --- can imagine what dinner service would be. I'm a very patient person but this is too much."

  • "As always the food was wonderful. The service this time was slow and they even forgot an item, but the gave us a free appetizer in exchange."

  • "Food is great, although a bit overpriced. Huge selection and taste is outstanding."

  • "our waiter could not have been less help full, we where seated close to the busing station very loud and distracting food was over priced for the quality and presentation... very dissapointing"

  • "Every time we have eaten at Koi, the food has been great. The service is efficient and friendly, yet not obtrusive. We are lucky to have found this gem."

  • "Good selections of different types of Chinese food-- great dimsum selection as well. Xiaolongbao and veggie dumplings were excellent, especially the dipping sauces. Server was nice but not the most attentive-- missed our two empty beer glasses entirely. He also did not have much to say when asked for recommendations. The space is clean, modern, and pleasing to look at."

  • "Had been to Koi many times before. Food ( the duck) was dry, and the sushi just ok. Been there many times before. Not likely to go back. Service on the slow side"

  • "so many good things to select. Veg options. spice level options. I love that I can get japanese food and chinese in the same meal. Generous portions. Good drinks."

  • "Food and service were terrific but two separate tables of rowdy patrons on a Saturday night made the dining experience very unpleasant. Finally management, used a sliding wall comprised of wood and glass to reduce the noise level from one table but a similar fix was not available for the other noisy table. Fortunately, that table left during the middle of our meal so that we could have a reasonably tranquil second half."

  • "I have been to Koi once before, several years ago, and after returning there this weekend, I wondered why I have not been back sooner! The food is superb. The service is superb. The ambiance is superb. I will there again SOON. Not your average Chinese food (huge menu of options, with dishes from 8 regions of China, plus the traditional Chinatown menu), but priced just above takeout, believe it or not. I highly recommend it for all ages, families, dates, occasions ..."

  • "I can say without a doubt that Koi Restaurant serves some of the Best Chinese food I have ever eaten. I particularly like the menu that specifies different regions of Chinese cuisine with accurate descriptions of the dishes. The Dover Sole and Eggplant was especially yummy. We tried dishes we had never eaten before and were excited by the new taste sensations."

  • "Took the family there to celebrate a graduation. Great food, good service, nice atmosphere. Just wish they wouldn't turn the lights down so low around 8:15pm. Makes it hard to read the menu in the dining area."

  • "I have been to Koi many times. This is the first time that I have had the lunch special. You get a soup, maki and entrée. The Mongolian beef was outstanding...best I've ever had."

  • "We dined early for lunch at Koi and really had a great experience. The waiter was attentive but not overly so. Appetizers were tasty, as was the delicious Basil Chicken entree that I had. We over-ordered (our eyes were bigger than our stomachs!) so the waiter packed all the leftovers separately to go. Overall, a great place for lunch. Very pleasant staff!"

  • "Although the outcome was excellent "getting" there was not easy. Front of the restaurant was packed so we were led to the back room (630 reservations). Table was not suitable for my dining partner and she had us moved to a 2-top that was a bench and chair facing each other. The person that sits on the bench (me) sits several inches higher than the person in the chair. After we stopped laughing and realized we were sitting next to a very loud party of 6 we moved to the sushi bar. Will sit here from now on. Very fun, funny and educating experience. Enjoy!"

  • "Overal - average. Long menu of Chinese entries with some details on ingredients. Disappointing seafood combination (also its probably hard to expect more if a freezer played the role of the "sea"). Good but not outstanding Szechwan pork. Too noisy when your for "party of 2" is next to a big company table. Friendly and young crew may be the most attractive part of experience. Free parking on a street in couple of blocks. Definitely not bad, but if you are not familiar with the Chinese cousin this place probably won't ignite your interest."

  • "We have been there before. When we are in Evanston, we usually go there. It good, a little loud, nice service and good bartenders. The family owned another restaurant named Chen's, in Chicago. That is the reason we visited Koi to begin with. We still miss Chen's though."

  • "We will not be returning until Koi gets it kitchen staff together again. What a catastrophe! Waitstaff stretched to too many tables. Never offered drinks, tea or dessert. Food took 50 minutes to be served-soup included! Food served luke warm, over cooked fried (?) chicken satay, fried dumplings gooey and hard around the edges, browning lettuce for the wraps! We did receive an apology and 25% off of our bill. Koi was one of my favorite go-to Asian restaurants. Not so much anymore."

  • "Service was slow. Our waiter kept forgetting about us when it came to ordering food and drinks. He also forgot basics like necessary silverware and soy sauce. Annoying. Food was ok. The server recommended one appetizer that came with 3 pieces when we had 5 people. Eh. My sesame chicken was dry and lacking sauce. Beautiful restaurant, but ultimately disappointing. "

  • "Koi has excellent, extremely fresh tasting sushi. They also have an extensive menu, which interestingly includes the regions the food items come from. If you like spicy food, they have a wonderful selection, if not, there is plenty to choose form also!"
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "Even the waiter noted how pricey the (creative but average tasting) sushi is getting at this respected restaurant. Why do so many choices include cilantro and cream cheese? They better take a hard look at the quality of their food (noticed a hair on one plate) prep and prices, as there are increasingly equal or better choices for asian cuisine. This has been one of my favorites for years, but I can't support it given the direction it is heading."

  • "We've been here about 3 times. This time the food was great as usual. However, our service was slow. Took a long time for our waitress to initally come to the table, a long time to get our drinks, a long time to get our food. Mine was not hot and my friends food came about 5 to 10 minutes after the rest of us at the table (this didn't seem like a big deal to our waitress). When 2 couples share dinner and one doesn't have their food it's kind of glaring. Maybe it was just a fluke this night. We will go again!"

  • "This was our first time at Koi. The menu was very extensive and reasonably priced. We had a variety of rolls, sushi and entrees and each was great. Our waiter was able to make great recommendations as well. We will be going back."

  • "we went to Koi this last Saturday night , ordered and then waited and hour and a half for our food...the waitress apologized and offered free desserts which we were not interested in. I spoke to the manager to say how unhappy we were that and hour and a half went by and we had edamame only. When we received the check he had deducted 20%..which I felt was inadequate at best...I replied I felt that this was not really much considering the wait time. I will not be back."

  • "As always the food at Koi is excellent, that's one of the reasons why we keep returning The other is valet parking - we seldom go to many other restaurants in Evanston, particularly in the winter, as where can one park?? But, as always the service is not so great - waiters slow & the excuse "the kitchen is backed up" is heard every single time we have been here. Granted it is always during the dinner hours, but always?? Yes, always "the kitchen is backed up'!!"

  • "I'm surprised by how weak the service is at Koi. I love the food and atmosphere, but from the bar to the dining room, I find the service slow, inattentive and occasionally a little unfitnedly. And I have been to this restaurant about 20 times. The manager is friendly to the point of over doing it. I actually don't want to talk to the manager, I want to talk with my waiter or bartender and have them care about me. I just don't ever get that sense at Koi. We waited for a long time to order, and then between check backs. I don't usually write reviews of restaurants but I felt compelled here because there is something that just doesn't work about the service while the rest of the package is excellent."

  • "Koi has the best Chinese food I have ever had. We had Shrimp Dumplings as a starter, General Tao's Chicken/Beef combination, Walnut Shrimp and Chocolate Lava Cake for desert. Not only was each item flavored perfectly but they were served beautifully with a unique presentation. It was nice to not have the traditional plating of a white platter with a silver lid, as it is in most Chinese restaurants. I only wish I lived closer as driving an hour + for dinner is not something i do frequently. However, this will be my restaurant of choice whenever I am in the Evanston area for lunch or dinner."

  • "My dining partners and I, 4 people in total, all agreed that this was the very best meal any of us have had in quite some time. I can't speak for the other couple but my husband and I dine out very often, almost daily, and we loved Koi. Furthermore, we have a myriad of food restrictions and Koi gladly and hospitably accommodates our requests. We recommend the vegetarian potstickers. We loved that Koi serves Asian food from many regions of the Far East so we could each satisfy our food preferences! Each of our contacts, from the gentleman that phoned me to confirm our reservation to the waitstaff, were friendly and polite, respectful of our time frame and needs."

  • "Our server was very pleasant and didn't rush our meal (which is my biggest pet peeve when dining out at busy restaurants on weekend nights) In fact, we tipped her generously and she made a point to come back to the table to thank us for it, which was not expected by us of course, but very kind nonetheless. That said, all of our food was delicious....including the fun martini selection and dessert!! Koi never disappoints!!"

  • "It's been years since we've been to Koi and we were really looking forward to eating there again since we remembered the good being excellent. We were really disappointed with almost all of the dishes. The description of the seafood soup sounded delicious, but it was not good at all. Four people are it, none liked it. The rest of the dishes were nothing special and really no better than average. Really disappointing. And, it took forever to receive our food after we ordered. I think it took almost an hour! Again, really disappointing. I don't think we'll be going back anytime soon."

  • "We were there on Christmas. The maître d was unpleasant. The food was good but the speed of food delivery was terrible. We waited for more than an hour for food. We have been there on other holidays and haven't had this problem."

  • "Realizing that restaurants that are opened on Christmas Day are mostly Asian, Koi proved a good choice for our late lunch. Large and diverse menu, ample portions and no one rushed us! The only thing was we had a reservation for 2:45pm but all food had to be ordered before 3pm as the kitchen closes for an hour and a half. Luckily we got there a little early and skipped the chit chat until we had ordered. Was a positive experience and would eat there again."
